Dining room - transitional beige floor dining room idea in San Francisco with white walls

Situated in old Palo Alto, CA, this historic 1905 Craftsman style home now has a stunning landscape to match its custom hand-crafted interior. Our firm had a blank slate with the landscape, and carved out a number of spaces that this young and vibrant family could use for gathering, entertaining, dining, gardening and general relaxation. Mature screen planting, colorful perennials, citrus trees, ornamental grasses, and lots of depth and texture are found throughout the many planting beds. In effort to conserve water, the main open spaces were covered with a foot friendly, decorative gravel. Giving the family a great space for large gatherings, all while saving water.

The major objective of this home was to craft something entirely unique; based on our client’s international travels, and tailored to their ideal lifestyle. Every detail, selection and method was individual to this project. The design included personal touches like a dog shower for their Great Dane, a bar downstairs to entertain, and a TV tucked away in the den instead of on display in the living room. Great design doesn’t just happen. It’s a product of work, thought and exploration. For our clients, they looked to hotels they love in New York and Croatia, Danish design, and buildings that are architecturally artistic and ideal for displaying art. Our part was to take these ideas and actually build them. Every door knob, hinge, material, color, etc. was meticulously researched and crafted. Most of the selections are custom built either by us, or by hired craftsman.

These modern grommet-top drapes added the finishing touches to a complete makeover of this couple's living room and dining room. The window treatments hadn't been updated since the 1990's and were definitely in need of a refresh!

Gracefully curving through the home, this stunning stair is more than just an access point. It’s an experience. White oak handrail guides the hand upward, following the gentle sweep of the steps. The white risers balance the white oak treads, while the black metal balusters add a contemporary touch. Painted risers provide contrast to the warm oak treads, while black metal balusters introduce a crisp, contemporary edge. Framed by tall windows and illuminated by pendant lighting, the staircase becomes a study in precision and balance, where light, material, and form come together. 1976-2026 © Century Stair Company
