The Owners of a home that had been consumed by the moving dunes of Lake Michigan wanted a home that would not only stand the test of aesthetic time, but survive the vicissitudes of the environment. With the assistance of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality as well as the consulting civil engineer and the City of Grand Haven Zoning Department, a soil stabilization site plan was developed based on raising the new home’s main floor elevation by almost three feet, implementing erosion studies, screen walls and planting indigenous, drought tolerant xeriscaping. The screen walls, as well as the low profile of the home and the use of sand trapping marrum beachgrass all help to create a wind shadow buffer around the home and reduce blowing sand erosion and accretion. The Owners wanted to minimize the stylistic baggage which consumes most “cottage” residences, and with the Architect created a home with simple lines focused on the view and the natural environment. Sustainable energy requirements on a budget directed the design decisions regarding the SIPs panel insulation, energy systems, roof shading, other insulation systems, lighting and detailing. This client wanted a more modern look in their very traditional home. We were originally tasked with selecting paint colors, but they were so happy with our choices that they asked us to help with furniture, lighting and accessories in their family room, hallway and breakfast area. Being sensitive to their children and pets, we selected durable, cleanable fabrics and area rugs. The living room design was inspired by the beautiful blue and grey drapery fabric we found by Highland Court. The bright and cheery breakfast room transitions perfectly into the family room and kitchen. The fantastic aged silver metal light is our favorite modern item in the room.

This historic 1840’s Gothic Revival home perched on the harbor, presented an array of challenges: they included a narrow-restricted lot cozy to the neighboring properties, a sensitive coastal location, and a structure desperately in need of major renovations. The renovation concept respected the historic notion of individual rooms and connecting hallways, yet wanted to take better advantage of water views. The solution was an expansion of windows on the water siding of the house, and a small addition that incorporates an open kitchen/family room concept, the street face of the home was historically preserved. The interior of the home has been completely refreshed, bringing in a combined reflection of art and family history with modern fanciful choices. Adds testament to the successful renovation, the master bathroom has been described as “full of rainbows” in the morning.

The Clients asked us to help them renovate the Kitchen and create a Mud Room and small informal Powder Room in their home. The Kitchen had been redone a number of years earlier by prior Homeowners without regard for the style and detailing of the 1920’s Architecture. The layout was inefficient and awkward, and the ceiling had been lowered, clashing with the window heads. We reconfigured existing angled walls and some closets to obtain unobstructed, straightforward spaces in which to layout the elements that our Clients wanted, and raised the ceiling to match the original height. Simplicity, symmetry and sensitivity to the existing Architecture of the home were our guiding principles in the design of this graceful, elegant Kitchen and Mud Room.
