In this two-story addition, the Owner's did not simply get more space – the very feel of their home was revolutionized. Through the remodel process, what had been a fine living area before was transformed into an exceptionally open and bright space for welcoming guests and thriving as a family. The deftly designed addition emphasizes a large back deck, which the family has said feels and acts like an extension of the interior space. The new elevated paver deck overlooks Downtown Seattle and the Cascade mountain range across Elliott Bay. Significant structural work allowed the family room to expand, a dining room to be created, and the basement den to grow to a full-fledged Seahawk haven.

Rustic isn’t always rough around the edges, and you don’t have to live on a farm to love farmhouse style. Here, we've transformed traditional elements to create a modern farmhouse bedroom. Our Triangle bedding honors the tradition of quilting, a hallmark of farmhouse style, while the Lincoln poster bed adds modern drama to the simply furnished space. The palette is simple and welcoming, and black and white bedroom ideas abound throughout the room: the bedding, the Kennington table lamp, and the nature-inspired photographs.

Our overall design concept for the renovation of this space was to optimize the functional space for a family of five and accentuate the existing window. In the renovation, we eliminated a huge centrally located kitchen island which acted as an obstacle to the feeling of the space and focused on creating an elegant and balanced plan promoting movement, simplicity and precisely executed details. We held strong to having the kitchen cabinets, wherever possible, float off the floor to give the subtle impression of lightness avoiding a bottom heavy look. The cabinets were painted a pale tinted green to reduce the empty effect of light flooding a white kitchen leaving a softness and complementing the gray tiles. To integrate the existing dining room with the kitchen, we simply added some classic dining chairs and a dynamic light fixture, juxtaposing the geometry of the boxy kitchen with organic curves and triangular lights to balance the clean design with an inviting warmth.
