The best example of this was with the cabinetry. They liked the stain and color of the cabinetry, so we decided to simply refinish the cabinets to make them look new again. We removed and replace the light-colored stone backsplash with a beautiful rectangular glass mosaic tile(American Olean) containing various hues of beige and brown to tie into the existing colors already found in the space. What simply started out as the purchase of a 30” Wolf gas stove to replace the old, turned into a complete kitchen renovation. The original intent was to replace the existing stove with the new. The new Wolf came other issues one being installing an adequate exhaust system to meet the needs of the stove. One thing led to the next and with that a new kitchen. The renovation included removing all existing fixtures, cabinetry and lighting. The existing tile floor remained the same but with some added area that was previously under existing base cabinets. The goal of the project, once the decision was made to do a complete renovation, was to update the kitchen creating an eclectic aesthetic with all new fixtures of the best quality that could be afforded. Listed below are the changes that were made. All fixtures remained in their existing locations other than removing small piece of wall that allowed an extended length of the new bakers table to extend 24” into the existing dining and living room space to pull the spaces together and provide a small eating bar with adjoining bar stools. One stool was a custom design and fabrication (Marlin Stool) Fixtures 1. Existing gas stove replaced with new 30” gas Wolf stove. 2. Existing Refrigerator replace with new 36” stainless steel Jen-Air refrigerator with bottom freezer. 3. Existing Dishwasher replace with new Jen-Air stainless steel interior and exterior dishwasher. 4. Existing base cabinets replaced with a combination of open and closed tables and cabinets. Two stainless steel commercial kitchen tables with an open bases and shelving. One with a stainless steel top the other a bakers table with a wood butcher block top. The cabinets were Kraft Made traditional wood base cabinets with a Kaffe finish and Fireslate counter surface. These cabinets were customized with stainless steel perforated door inserts and Mockett stainless steel drawer and door pulls. 5. Surface counter and table material included wood butcher block, stainless steel and Fireslate. 6. Overhead shelving included open commercial kitchen stainless steel shelves and open Appleply wood shelves with Rakks aluminum shelf brackets. 7. Existing lighting was replaced with Zumtobel track lighting with Ushio lamps, Lutron dimmers and an up lighted coffered ceiling (see Superman). 8. Existing kitchen sink was replaced with a large single compartment sink from Kindred with an In-Sinkerator Evolution garbage disposal. Filter water tap was added that connects to an Everprue water filter system. 9. Walls were tiled with Bottle Green 4 1/4” x 4 1/4” Daltile to staying consistent with existing original house tile. 10. The ceiling was reworked as required with a plaster finish 11. Marine grade caulk was used as required. 12. Relocating from San Francisco, this young family immediately zeroed in on the wonderful historic homes around downtown Chicago. Most of the properties they saw checked a lot of wish list boxes, but none of them checked every box. The house they landed on had beautiful curb appeal, a dramatic entry with a welcoming porch and front hall, and a really nice yard. Unfortunately, it did not have a kitchen that was well set-up for cooking and entertaining. Reworking the kitchen area was the top priority. The family had met with a few other designers and even had an architect take a crack at the space, but they were not able to come up with a viable solution. Here’s how Senior Designer Diana Burton approached the project… Design Objectives: Respect the home’s vintage feel while bringing the kitchen up to date Open up the kitchen area to create an open space for gathering and entertaining Upgrade appliances to top-of-the-line models Include a large island with seating Include seating for casual family meals in a space that won’t be a replacement for the adjacent formal dining room THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Remove a load-bearing wall and combine smaller rooms to create one big kitchen A powder room in the back corner of the existing kitchen was a huge obstacle to updating the layout Maintain large windows with views of the yard while still providing ample storage Design Solutions: Relocating the powder room to another part of the first floor (a large closet under the stairs) opened up the space dramatically Create space for a larger island by recessing the fridge/freezer and shifting the pantry to a space adjacent to the kitchen A banquette saves space and offers a perfect solution for casual dining The walnut banquette table beautifully complements the fridge/freezer armoire Utilize a gap created by the new fridge location to create a tall shallow cabinet for liquor storage w/ a wine cubby Closing off one doorway into the dining room and using the “between the studs” space for a tall storage cabinet Dish organizing drawers offer handy storage for plates, bowls, and serving dishes right by main sink and dishwasher Cabinetry backing up to the dining room offers ample storage for glassware and functions both as a coffee station and cocktail bar Open shelves flanking the hood add storage without blocking views and daylight A beam was required where the wall was removed. We achieved this for them be removing the tub and increasing their vanity wall area with a tall matching linen cabinet for storage. This still left a nice space for Mr. to have his sitting area, which was important to him. Their bathroom prior to remodeling had a small and enclosed fiberglass shower stall with the toilet in front. We relocated the toilet, where a linen closet used to be, and made its own room for it. This study makeover was one of several room redesigns we completed recently for our clients. The clients’ study serves as a home office but is visible from the entry foyer. As such, they wanted to update the look to reflect the other areas of their home. They wanted to keep the large desk and credenza set but were open to updating everything else in the room. The other furnishings and accessories had begun to look dated and, because these pieces were added over time, the incongruent patterns on upholstery, drapery, and rug detracted from the cohesiveness of the room. We began the project by removing the second door to the bathroom, which helped to open up that space. We then painted the room with SW Accessible Beige. The next step was to install grasscloth wallpaper behind the desk, making use of both texture and color to showcase the main wall. We found a stately, yet modern, work credenza to replace the old cabinet, and topped it with the original tall lamps used in the room. They looked quite different, however, simply by replacing the lampshades! The accent chairs were reupholstered and custom window treatments were hung in the sitting area. The addition of a more modern lamp on the existing small table completed the look in front of the window. On the opposite wall, the removal of the tall lamps allowed for the display of three beautiful framed works of art with special meaning to the clients. We added a modern ceiling fixture to bring more light into the room, and also replaced the rug with an updated pattern and color scheme to coordinate with the rest of the study. This project was finished with the hanging of a gorgeous piece of hand-painted artwork on the showcase wall behind the desk. The silver-framed print incorporates shades of cream, light brown, seafoam green, gray and various blues that beautifully tie together the room’s color scheme.

Infusing this once, drab 80’s kitchen with light and color was one goal in this extensive remodel. By removing the wall separating the dining room from the kitchen, the space doubled in size and allowed natural light to flood it. Creating a design that filled the space yet remained very functional to the homeowner was extremely important. By implementing the two working triangles, one homeowner can be using the sink, cooktop and refrigerator while the other uses the secondary island for food prep as it has an additional sink. A large soffit housing HVAC runs through the middle of the townhome and seemed intrusive to the space at first. After embracing it in the design, it’s as if it were meant to be. Three aluminum framed cabinets hang below, one directly underneath the soffit to create an asymmetrical design. On a budget but still wanting a beautiful design, Crystal’s semi-custom line of cabinetry came into play. Simply White and Light Grey provide the perfect backdrop for natural maple, brushed gold hardware and accessories that infuse the space with color. Relocating from San Francisco, this young family immediately zeroed in on the wonderful historic homes around downtown Chicago. Most of the properties they saw checked a lot of wish list boxes, but none of them checked every box. The house they landed on had beautiful curb appeal, a dramatic entry with a welcoming porch and front hall, and a really nice yard. Unfortunately, it did not have a kitchen that was well set-up for cooking and entertaining. Reworking the kitchen area was the top priority. The family had met with a few other designers and even had an architect take a crack at the space, but they were not able to come up with a viable solution. Here’s how Senior Designer Diana Burton approached the project… Design Objectives: Respect the home’s vintage feel while bringing the kitchen up to date Open up the kitchen area to create an open space for gathering and entertaining Upgrade appliances to top-of-the-line models Include a large island with seating Include seating for casual family meals in a space that won’t be a replacement for the adjacent formal dining room THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Remove a load-bearing wall and combine smaller rooms to create one big kitchen A powder room in the back corner of the existing kitchen was a huge obstacle to updating the layout Maintain large windows with views of the yard while still providing ample storage Design Solutions: Relocating the powder room to another part of the first floor (a large closet under the stairs) opened up the space dramatically Create space for a larger island by recessing the fridge/freezer and shifting the pantry to a space adjacent to the kitchen A banquette saves space and offers a perfect solution for casual dining The walnut banquette table beautifully complements the fridge/freezer armoire Utilize a gap created by the new fridge location to create a tall shallow cabinet for liquor storage w/ a wine cubby Closing off one doorway into the dining room and using the “between the studs” space for a tall storage cabinet Dish organizing drawers offer handy storage for plates, bowls, and serving dishes right by main sink and dishwasher Cabinetry backing up to the dining room offers ample storage for glassware and functions both as a coffee station and cocktail bar Open shelves flanking the hood add storage without blocking views and daylight A beam was required where the wall was removed. The Infinity series containers are made of square units of 19''5/8W x 18''7/8D x 19''5/8H with lacquered frame (11 Horm colors) and doors veneered with bois blond stained beech (Horm finish). The doors are covered with three elements of decorative lacquered laminate attached by means of hidden magnets and whose arrangement determines the line pattern shown on the front of each container. Interestingly enough, each line moves across doors in a continued and seemingly infinite pattern, regardless of the chosen arrangement.
