Working with William was a positive and rewarding experience. I contacted him to consult on plans for building a vacation/rental in the Florida Keys. William provided positive, innovative insights and brought new creative ideas to the project.
William asked us important questions to help us clarify our desired uses for space making our experience truly collaborative. He looked at the needs of our family and helped us to design a project with those in consideration. William also worked within our financial guidelines on areas of architectural design. His architectural design advice also included considerations of furniture selection and layouts as well as material selection.
He also brought the principles of passive cooling and our home's relationship to the environment, the sun and prevailing breezes of the Florida Keys.
Additionally, William was direct and his communication as well as prompt and timely with all appointments. He is professional, trustworthy, and responsive.
He is currently working on my office space located in Fort Lauderdale which I look forward on moving into shortly and would highly recommend engaging him for any architectural services you might require.

William Hoffman is an excellent architect, who found design solutions we couldnt see ourselves. We especially appreciated Williams ability to make our extension look like it has always been there, and making subtle changes to the current dwelling to enhance the end result.
The process was great, starting with sketches and over a few weeks moving towards a finished CAD drawing. We are very happy with the end result.

Excellent ability to interpret client needs and taste. Excellent problem solved. Creative interpretation of clients vision yielded flawless product. Prompt service and good value. My experience was 100% positive in all aspects. Would highly recommend for any project, particularly where an artistic and economical result are desired.

William has a great feel for space and a refreshing approach to South Florida architecture, but unfortunately he is not an easy person to work with.
Please keep in mind that I do not have extensive experience working with architects, but I do engage with a variety of creative professionals regularly and work as a designer and engineer myself.
I hired William to re-design a 600 sq. ft. covered, outdoor living space at a house in Fort Lauderdale. 3-4 weeks into the design process William abruptly walked away from the project with a one sentence email and mailed my deposit back - there was no communication about grave issues or notice given beforehand - in fact, we had a friendly and positive exchange the Friday before his exit on Monday.
In our only dialogue since, I've gathered a few significant constraints that must be considered when working with William and I thought others should be aware of them.
1. The design process is not collaborative. William asks questions and converts your answers into his design. My ideas and sketches were not welcomed in the process and seemed to contribute to his exit.
2. He does not enjoy working within schedules and doesn't like being asked about them either. I didn't impose a schedule but did ask about progress 4 weeks in.
3. William also does not provide cost estimates or ranges. He bills by the hour so you must trust him to spend time efficiently and ask about costs as you go along.
In general, I would say most of the issues I experienced are centered around poor communication and intolerance. After accepting the responsibility of a project, I believe you should follow through with the agreement unless unsurmountable obstacles arise. In my project, an insurmountable scenario was a client that was providing too much feedback and asking too many questions. In my experience, this is pretty trivial in the realm of chaos that can be the creative process.
An open budget and timeline wasn't enough, and as a client, I also wasn't entitled to an explanation for his exit either - seems pretty one-sided.
I welcome sensitivity, and its one of the reasons I connected with William initially, but sensitivity doesn't mandate intolerance. I hope my experience is unique because I do believe William is very talented, but I do recommend addressing some of these considerations early in your project to avoid lost time.

Comment from William Hoffman Architect:
Sometimes the relationship between client and architect doesn’t work out as was the case in my relationship with Iris Development/Mr. Cooper. Notwithstanding the former I thank him for the positive statements, he noted in his review,
pertaining to my work.
The Project History:
Some 18 months ago I had been previously engaged by Mr. Cooper and provided him with schematic design sketches for a proposed renovation of a home he intended on using as a short term rental. The renovation was never realized, but my understanding was that Mr. Cooper was pleased with the result and he intends on using those concepts sometime in the future. The outdoor structure, for the same house, which required re-design, mentioned in his review, was knowingly designed and built by Mr. Cooper without a permit and that doing so could become an issue for him. He was consequently cited by the Fort Lauderdale Building Department with multiple building code violations 10 months prior to asking me to help him with this issue. Knowing this history, I took the project on as a favor, but with caution.
Shortly after starting the project, a series of “Red Flags” appeared that led me to believe that Mr. Cooper’s interest would be better served by another architect. Although I spent quite a bit of time on this project, the entire retainer fee was returned.
Mr. Cooper’s bullet points:
1. “The design process is not collaborative.” When I work together with a client on a project there is a dialogue which ensues. I listen closely to what the functional needs of my client are and their aesthetic sensibilities. The focus of the dialogue is asking the question “why” to get a sense of their thought process so I can design their home intelligently. My goal is that my clients are happily surprised with the design and say “It's not what I expected but I like it”.
2. “He does not enjoy working with schedules and doesn’t like being asked about them either.” Under normal circumstances I give my clients a sense of how long it will take to complete my work after a preliminary design has been agreed on.
3. "William also does not provide cost estimates or ranges.” Typically when I determine a fee, I first provide an hourly rate with a “not to exceed” figure for the schematic and preliminary design phase of the project. If it takes less time the fee reflects that. If it takes longer there is no additional cost to my client. Once the preliminary design is completed and my client and I are both happy with the result a fixed fee is provided for the design development and construction document phases of the project.

After purchasing a piece of property that had many large trees and lots of vegetation, I searched for the right architect to fulfill my expectations to create a special home that would be a part of the site's environment. I found William, who met and exceeded all my expectations. William is an architect who thoroughly engaged himself into my project. From the start of the project he demonstrated this by personally locating ever tree on the property to find the right location to place the house. He took me through the design process sharing and discussing the reasons for all his design decisions. He then produced a well thought out, detailed set of construction documents. He was also responsible for sourcing building and finish materials and leading a design-build team. The result was a unique home in which the spaces feel "right." My home is also passively cooled, sustainable, well built and blends in beautifully with the surrounding environment. If i ever build another home i would definitely contact William and highly recommend him as an architect to others.

William is not only a skilled and creative architect, he is also an artist. His attention to detail, knowledge of materials and consideration of all elements shows in his work. He is also very respectful of a budget and up front about estimated costs. Highly recommended

William was terrific to work with. His first project with us, was to design and supervise the construction of an addition to our home in Coral Springs. We were so happy with his work, that a few years later we had William design our dream home .He designed each room with the utmost care, making sure that our family's needs were met. William is a lighting "guru" and each space was perfectly lit for all occasions. He allowed us to collaborate closely with him thru the whole design and construction process. He met all of our expectations by designing a unique and beautiful home.
