Client downsizing into an 80's hi-rise condo hired designer to convert the small sitting room between the master bedroom & bathroom to her Home Office. Although the client, a female executive, was retiring, her many obligations & interests required an efficient space for her active future. We borrowed square footage from the bedroom to create a luxurious en suite bathroom. In order to make sure the bedroom didn't feel too small, we created a cathedral ceiling that soars all the way up to the underside of the roof. While we lost square footage on the ground, we added volume, and so the bedroom retained an airy feel. To support this airiness, we painted the entire room white. Nightstands were thrifted and painted a deep shade of hunter green, which, when paired with the wood bedframe and the honey brown colors of the rug and bedding, add warmth to the otherwise neutral space.

A contemporary "Pretty in Pink" bedroom for any girl of any age. The soft, matte blush pink custom accent wall adorned with antique, mercury glass to elevate the room. One can't help but take in the small understated details with the luxurious fabrics on the accent pillows and the signature art to compliment the room.

The small home office is tucked off of the entry but allows for a quite space to get work done.

West Village Bachelor pad bedroom, featuring a hand-painted geometric design that highlights the pre-war features of the space, like the picture moldings. Additionally, because the client wanted both a work space and a place to put his TV (the pre-war wall could not hold a wall mounted tv!), we designed a custom desk/console piece out of reclaimed wood and metal hairpin legs that served both purposes, and fit the space perfectly. This is the guest bedroom in a small vacation home in South Beach. I wanted to maintain a feeling of casualness, so I infused it with some quirky touches and humor —like the art piece above the bed—, along with a mix of vintage and contemporary pieces. For the primary “artwork”, I created the shelves of outward facing books that not only adds a striking visual to the space, but also gives guests a range of books to enjoy. At the opposite end of the twins' bedroom is the work area. The table was custom made during the time that some of the children were being home schooled, so it needed to be a good size with lots of room to spread out. Above the workspace, another piece by Ann Carrington creates a dramatic focal point. A portrait of Michael Jordan, the piece is constructed from layers upon layers of old cut basketballs. Closed storage is kept to a minimum, even in the boys' room. In order to prevent clutter, objects are given away when they have lived out their use by the family. "We hate clutter", says Cortney. Harbor View is a modern-day interpretation of the shingled vacation houses of its seaside community. The gambrel roof, horizontal, ground-hugging emphasis, and feeling of simplicity, are all part of the character of the place. While fitting in with local traditions, Harbor View is meant for modern living. The kitchen is a central gathering spot, open to the main combined living/dining room and to the waterside porch. One easily moves between indoors and outdoors. The house is designed for an active family, a couple with three grown children and a growing number of grandchildren. It is zoned so that the whole family can be there together but retain privacy. Living, dining, kitchen, library, and porch occupy the center of the main floor. One-story wings on each side house two bedrooms and bathrooms apiece, and two more bedrooms and bathrooms and a study occupy the second floor of the central block. The house is mostly one room deep, allowing cross breezes and light from both sides. The porch, a third of which is screened, is a main dining and living space, with a stone fireplace offering a cozy place to gather on summer evenings. A barn with a loft provides storage for a car or boat off-season and serves as a big space for projects or parties in summer.

When our client requested a cozy retreat for her study, we re-configured a narrow 6’ x 12’ space off the Master Bedroom hall. By combining 2 separate rooms, a dated wet bar and a stackable washer/dryer area, we captured the square footage needed for the Study. As someone who likes to spread out and have multiple projects going on at the same time, we designed the L-shaped work surface and created the functionality she longed for. A tall storage cabinet just wide enough to house her files and printer, anchors one end while an oversized ‘found’ vintage bracket adorns the other, giving openness to an otherwise tight space. Previously separated by a wall, the 2 windows now bring cheerful natural light into the singular space. Thick floating shelves above the work surface feature LED strip lighting which is especially enticing at night. A sliding metal chalkboard opposite of the worksurface is easily accessible and provides a fun way to keep track of daily activities. The black and cream “star” patterned floor tile adds a bit of whimsy to the Study and compliments the rustic charm of the family’s antique cowhide chair. What is not to love about the compact yet inviting space?
