The industrious clients came to us with dreams of a new garage structure to provide a home for all of their passions. The design came together around a three car garage with room for a micro-brewery, workshop and bicycle storage – all attached to the house via a new three season porch – and a native prairie landscape and sauna structure on the roof. My clients wanted their backyard to act as an extension of the home, and with busy modern schedules, the ambience at night is as important as during the day. Even so the space was tiny, they wanted to be able to entertain and invite the full symphony, lounge, enjoy smores, screen movies on their garage wall. What was a patchy lawn looking onto an A/C unit proved to be very hard to upkeep, like most lawns: fluctuating between wet and soggy and dry and dusty. So the client—a film editor—wanted a natural play space for both kids and adults that was more attractive and easier to maintain. We replaced the lawn with irregular bluestone to give the garden a natural organic feel, and framed it in the back with a curved stone seating wall to maximize the seating area. We added privacy lattice work to the existing fence and in front of the AC unit for a consistent back screen. The result is a garden that is easy to keep up, spacious and inviting of those wielding toy trucks and cocktails alike.

This garden storage cottage is viewed in the landscape from the house and has a setting that encourages a stroll to see the Summer perennials as well as the small vegetable garden set off to the side.

Designed by our friends at Moody Landscape Architecture, we were excited to build this small, highly detailed, contemporary garden for them and their client. This small courtyard garden was completely transformed with a new mahogany deck with cable railing, western red cedar fence, new bluestone patio, and perennial plantings.
