Designed by Tim Higbee of Closet Works: The Murphy style wall bed folds out into a queen size bed with a comfortable 8 inch thick quality mattress. A pull-out table on the right side bed is perfect when guests stay overnight, but folds away into the wall unit when the room is used as an office. Built-in interior lighting above the wall bed is perfect for reading in bed and the switch is conveniently located on the left side of the head of the bed. When the wall bed is open, the lighted, recessed well that holds the bed when it is closed creates a visual separation from the wall storage unit, framing the top of the mattress like a custom headboard. This Murphy bed was custom made off-site and installed in the home. There were space restrictions for the bed and it was tucked in nicely behind and between 2 windows. The lights shut off automatically when the bed is closed and are controlled bedside. There is an plug for phone on the in-set shelves which are deep enough for videos, books and such. The vintage house trim was wrapped around the bed for a built in look. This option is so much less expensive than adding on to a home and can provide you with a multi-function room for guests and your own daily use.

This basement appeared have many functions as a family room, kid's playroom, and bedroom. The existing wall of mirrors was hiding a closet which overwhelmed the space. The lower level is separated from the rest of the house, and has a full bathroom and walk out so we went with an extra bedroom capability. Without losing the family room atmosphere this would become a lower level "get away" that could transition back and forth. We added pocket doors at the opening to this area allowing the space to be closed off and separated easily. Emtek privacy doors give the bedroom separation when desired. Next we installed a Murphy Bed in the center portion of the existing closet. With new closets, bi-folding closet doors, and door panels along the bed frame the wall and room were complete.

Small modern apartments benefit from a less is more design approach. To maximize space in this living room we used a rug with optical widening properties and wrapped a gallery wall around the seating area. Ottomans give extra seating when armchairs are too big for the space.
