2014 Home Tour Participant Happy empty-nesters, called upon Castle for help in remodeling their main floor for a new master suite. The whole main floor was assessed to utilize the space for minimal clutter and optimal storage. Staying true to the original era of the home, clean lines and modern touches were brought into the space. The new layout incorporates a new luxurious master bath, custom walk-in closet, master bedroom, new windows throughout, and a new front entry. The couple was eager for easy access into all spaces, including their bathroom. Pocket doors and a floor plan that incorporates function and privacy was designed. Bringing the modern flare into the bath was achieved by playing with one of the elements of design, line; 2 stacked floating vanities with custom Dakota surfaces recycled glass countertops, modern Kohler plumbing fixtures, gorgeous tile that runs long with the room, and a custom tile niche wraps two full walls into the shower. Innovative details were selected including a Solatube with integrated light/bath fan, teak flip up/down shower bench, Kohler hydrorail showering column, as well as a schluter linear drain. Sweatman-Young removed the kitchen ceiling, cabinets and flooring. We framed in 12" kitchen soffit as needed, added 1-Solatube, made plumbing and electrical changes, performed drywall and paint services, provided and installed custom built cabinets, quartz slab countertops, full height tile backsplash, new vinyl plank flooring and installed the new appliances.

This bath is bright, thanks to a Solatube Daylighting system – like an efficient skylight – that provides great natural lighting by day and with the optional light fixture, a safe night light. An abundance of in-ceiling lights creates a minimalist bright overall ambience as well as focused task lighting for a low vision user. A Remcraft 5X lighted magnified makeup mirror caps off the accessible lighting design.

These environmentally conscious homeowners have always hoped for a light and bright kitchen. Having tried new paint and DIY fixes, they knew the next step was a full kitchen remodel. The new kitchen was designed to incorporate more storage, additional countertop space, and a focus on bringing light within the room. White cabinets, custom handmade recycled glass countertops by Dakota Surfaces, and white backsplash surround the room. Bringing in natural light, two additional windows were added with a view of the back yard and two new solatubes were installed for additional natural light. LED solatube light kits were included, LED undercabinet lighting and an LED entry light complete the light package. To tie in the rest of the home, the existing hardwoods were refinished and stained to match the front of the home along with new millwork and trim in coordinating styles. The whole space provides not only a functional space but a wonderful feeling of sunshine when you walk into the room.
