So, what is her favorite part of the kitchen? Well, everything.
“I love the whole thing. I agonized over every detail, like the legs on the table, which we sourced from a bar company. I also love the colors like the darker gray on the island and a lighter gray for the cabinets. And, I really love the pendant lights,” she says.
Elisia offers some words of advice for other IKEA customers starting their own remodel project —especially those new to the process.
“I suggest you spend time on Pinterest and HOUZZ to get a good idea of kitchen designs. When you find a picture you like, try to figure out what it is exactly that you like. That’s how I realized I wanted that vent hood with the tile/brick facade, for instance,” she says.
“Also, I so appreciated having the help of IKD. They were experienced and knowledgeable about the IKEA software and IKEA products. Having a sounding board and someone to translate my vision into what I needed for the cabinetry was so great,” she says.
She concludes: “IKD lets you be as involved as you want to be, so I was very involved. I knew to an inch what I wanted to see. I could make sure I was buying all the right pieces, and allowing for the space necessary to make sure the doors and drawers opened enough.”
We’re so glad you love your kitchen Elisia!

Kittery Junction was originally constructed by the York Harbor & Beach Railroad Co. between 1886 and 1887. In the days when the locomotive was the preferred method of transportation for much of America’s population, this project site provided both passenger and freight service between Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and York Beach, Maine. It was usually the case that a train station constructed during this period would have its own unique architecture, and this site was no exception.
Now privately owned, this structure proudly stands overlooking Barrell’s Pond. To capture this view, the new owner approached our design team with a vision of a master bedroom Victorian conservatory facing the serene body of water. Respectful of the existing architectural details, Sunspace Design worked to bring this vision to reality using our solid conventional walls, custom Marvin windows, and a custom shop-built octagonal conservatory glass roof system. This combination enabled us to meet strong energy efficiency requirements while creating a classic Victorian conservatory that met the client’s hopes.
The glass roof system was constructed in the shop, transported to site, and raised in place to reduce on site construction time. With windows and doors provided by a top window manufacturer, the 2’ x 6’ wall construction with gave us complete design control. With solid wood framing, fiberglass R-21 insulation in the walls, and sputter coated low-E sun control properties in the custom glass roof system, the construction is both structurally and thermally sound. The end result is a comfortable Victorian conservatory addition that can easily withstand the harsh elements of a Maine winter.
We’ve been designing and building conservatories in New England since 1981. This project stands as a model of our commitment to quality. We utilize this construction process for all of our sunrooms, skylights, conservatories, and orangeries to ensure a final product that is unsurpassed in quality and performance.

We were approached with a request to design the furnishings for an existing ‘finished’ apartment. The intention was to move in relatively fast, and the property already had an existing marble floor, kitchen and bathrooms which had to be kept. The property also boasted a fantastic 270 degree view, seen from most of the apartment. The clients had a very important role in the completion of the project. They were very involved during the design process and through various decoration choices. The final design was kept as a rigid guideline when faced with picking out all the different elements.
Once clear of all previous furniture, the space felt cold and bare; so we immediately felt the need for warmth, and raw, natural elements and textures to complement the cold marble floor while visually tying in the design of the whole apartment together.
Since the existing kitchen had a touch of dark walnut stain, we felt this material was one we should add to the palette of materials to contest the stark materials. A raw cement finish was another material we felt would add an interesting contrast and could be used in a variety of ways, from cabinets to walls and ceilings, to tie up the design of various areas of the apartment.
To warm up the living/dining area, keeping the existing marble floor but visually creating zones within the large living/dining area without hindering the flow, a dark timber custom-made soffit, continuous with a floor-to-ceiling drinks cabinet zones the dining area, giving it a degree of much-needed warmth.
The various windows with a stupendous 270 degree view needed to be visually tied together. This was done by introducing a continuous sheer [drape] which also doubled up as a sound-absorbing material along 2 of the 4 walls of the space.
A very large sofa was required to fill up the space correctly, also required for the size of the young family.
Services were integrated within the units and soffits, while a customized design in the corner between the kitchen and the living room took into consideration the viewpoints from the main areas to create a pantry without hindering the flow or views. A strategically placed floor-to-ceiling mirror doubles up the space and extends the view to the inner parts of the apartment.
The daughter’s bedroom was a small challenge in itself, and a fun task, where we wanted to achieve the perception of a cozy niche with its own enclosed reading nook [for reading fairy tales], behind see-through curtains and a custom-ordered wall print sporting the girl’s favorite colors.
The sons’ bedroom had double the requirements in terms of space needed: more wardrobe, more homework desk space, a tv/play station area… “We combined a raised platform area between the boys’ beds to become an area with cushions where the kids can lay down and play, and face a hidden screen behind the homework desk’s sliding back panel for their play station”. The color of the homework desk was chosen in relation to the boys’ ages. A more masculine material palette was chosen for this room, in contrast to the light pastel palette of the girl’s bedroom. Again, this colour can easily be changed over time for a more mature look.

AFTER PHOTO - James Latta Photography -
As an interior designer, I liked my home but was not "in love" with it. I didn't feel in sync with the style and architecture despite compliments from friends and family. It was time for a change. I sold my Floating Home (see Sleepless in Portland: Houseboat Diary) and my La Quinta home (see Transitional Living, La Quinta) and downsized to a house that's a better fit.
The home was lacking sufficient storage so I added a beverage center with storage cabinets and a butcher block countertop to the dining room. An Ikea table frame was powder coated in dark grey and fitted with a Cambria Quartz dining top. A matching quartz piece was added to create a kitchen bar seating area and includes a beautiful waterfall edge. Reclaimed wood square tiles were added to the kitchen pop up ceiling and the living room fireplace to add warmth and texture. Black and white photography of the local desert landscape frame the fireplace. Although the home is mainly grey, black and white, pops of red are a recurring theme thought the interior and exterior, including a red barn door at the kitchen pantry.
I broke design rules and didnt take the "safe" route. Quirky accent items can be found throughout the home. These include a wall-mounted family accordion, framed movie quotes in one of the guest rooms, a custom canvas photo of my miniature schnauzer, and dragon print accent pillows throughout. A Tongue and Groove (T&G) wood ceiling transformed the master bedroom and a beautiful red area rug adds color and warmth. The result is DARING and yet comfortable.
The backyard was completely renovated. Tons of white rock were removed and beautiful landscaping and lighting were added as well as an additional 500 square feet of pavers. A sun shade, red umbrellas, and patio misters create inviting seating areas for friends and family. Tongue and Groove wood was also added to the outdoor patio ceilings. A high end surround sound system and built in BBQ with patterned cement tiles complete this outdoor living space.
The process was exhausting and time consuming but now that it is over, I am thrilled with the results.
I now live in a home that nourishes my soul and better represents my style and tastes.

In the heart of Point Loma, where the sea breeze dances through the streets and the sound of seagulls fills the air, your home stood as a testament to history and potential. Nestled within this coastal community, your house underwent a transformation that breathed new life into its tired bones. The journey began with dreams and blueprints, where you envisioned the perfect space to call home. Collaborating with architects and designers, you crafted plans that honored the neighborhood's character while infusing modern comforts and style. Perhaps you imagined expansive windows framing panoramic ocean views or a seamless indoor-outdoor living space where the line between inside and outside blurred. As the project gained momentum, the house underwent a metamorphosis. Walls were torn down, revealing the raw canvas upon which your vision would unfold. Skilled craftsmen meticulously shaped each detail, from the sturdy frame to the delicate finishes. Perhaps you opted for reclaimed wood flooring to add warmth and character, or custom cabinetry that married form and function seamlessly. Throughout the process, you navigated the challenges and triumphs of renovation, each step bringing you closer to the realization of your dream home. From selecting the perfect shade of paint to choosing fixtures that spoke to your aesthetic, every decision was a brushstroke on the canvas of your life. And finally, the day arrived when the last nail was hammered, the final coat of paint applied, and your home stood ready to welcome you with open arms. As you crossed the threshold, a sense of pride and accomplishment washed over you, knowing that this space was a reflection of your vision and perseverance. Now, as you bask in the comfort of your newly remodeled home, you savor the moments spent with loved ones, the laughter that fills the rooms, and the memories waiting to be made. In the heart of Point Loma, your house stands as more than just a structure—it's a sanctuary, a testament to the beauty of transformation and the power of possibility.

This waterfront recording cottage is a remarkable feat of engineering and design, built in just nine months, despite the challenges posed by its location on an island with limited vehicular access. Our team worked closely with an Architect, Landscape Architect, Studio Designer & Audio Visual team to create a space that is truly one of a kind.
The cottage features a sound isolated live room and an isolation booth that are fully equipped with top-of-the-line recording equipment. The recording space is fully integrated with multi-room control, enabling the user to monitor the recording process from any room in the cottage. In addition, it is equipped with two kitchenettes, one and a half baths and a state-of-the-art Lutron lighting system, adding ambiance to the space, and setting the right mood for the musicians. The result of this custom build is a recording studio that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, providing the perfect space for creativity.

We built this detached additional dwelling unit for a lovely couple looking to settle down on their family homestead. Our clients wanted to build their forever home right next door to family! We started our process with a feasibility study to see what was possible with the land. Once we understood what was possible we dived right into space planning and interior finishes. We took a lot of care into creating a space plan that fit Jack’s collection of Amish furniture. Making sure that his office would fit each item he wanted in that space and function well! When it got to the kitchen, we created a chefs dream with easy to access magnetic wall storage, roll out pantry storage and undercabinet lighting! We added a little wow to the powder room by including a blingy light fixture. The end result is exactly what they needed to be close to family and enjoy their own space at the same time.

A unique West Coast Modern design by Etienne de Villiers located near Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Featuring Douglas Fir glulam timberframe, this home is modern, yet comfortable and warm - signature traits of a West Coast Contemporary design.
Located on a high ridge of Denman Island, the design emulates a bridge with the master suite and living areas on one side, the guest rooms and amenities on the other and a bridge structure housing the main living area and kitchen. This glorious home captures the best elements of West Coast living with 360 views of the forest, ocean and Beaufort Mountain range across Baynes sound.
We built this home on an island with ferry access, so detailed pre-planning was imperative. Our crew pre-cut and test fitted all of the members in our shop for an easy installation on-site, which made for a very smooth construction process.

When the Grossman’s located in Miami area decided it was time to transform their tired, old pool into the tranquil retreat they’ve always wanted, Van Kirk & Sons was there every step of the transformation process. At the end of a long day the family can enjoy unwinding in their spa, or simply listening to the serene sounds of the cleanly designed, floating water fountain. This stunning water feature also doubles as a unique, refreshing waterbed for sprawling out on in the sun. On the weekends, the Grossmans can finally entertain their friends by the pool, and by the looks of it, they’ll never want to leave.

This custom bow front aquarium is everything short of a typical setup. The space we worked with (see image) was small wasted closet space and upon seeing the potential we hit the road running. With a small floor space we chose to incorporate height to balance it all out. The filtration and water processing systems was plumbed to the basement to reduce sound. Congratulations to the family that allowed us to transform their kitchen space! We managed to complete this remodel - just in time for them to bring a beautiful baby girl into this world!
It was quite an amazing experience to design and remodel this home with our new Medallion Cabinetry product line. The main area of cabinetry features our Gold Line in Park Place door style, in the color Sea Salt with Pewter Highlight. Their new 7ft island is our Appaloosa Peppercorn with matching island legs.
New Vista managed this project from start to finish, including all permits required by the local building department.
The previous 20ft wall had been located from the area of the remaining post to the window to the right of the sink, shown in these photos. Proper removal of this wall did require a structurally sound weight load transfer in the attic. Safety comes first!
Also included: Granite counters, new appliances, brick style backsplash, flooring, gas line/plumbing/electrical relocation, can lighting and new plumbing fixtures.
Our CAD drawings are proving to be incredibly helpful in the design process of our remodels, allowing customers to really SEE what they can do with the space they have!
This project had closed without any change orders and the total time encompassed exactly 8wks - from demolition to final inspection!
