DOWNLOAD NOW This unit, located in a 4-flat owned by TKS Owners Jeff and Susan Klimala, was remodeled as their personal pied-à-terre, and doubles as an Airbnb property when they are not using it. Jeff and Susan were drawn to the location of the building, a vibrant Chicago neighborhood, 4 blocks from Wrigley Field, as well as to the vintage charm of the 1890’s building. The entire 2 bed, 2 bath unit was renovated and furnished, including the kitchen, with a specific Parisian vibe in mind. Although the location and vintage charm were all there, the building was not in ideal shape -- the mechanicals -- from HVAC, to electrical, plumbing, to needed structural updates, peeling plaster, out of level floors, the list was long. Susan and Jeff drew on their expertise to update the issues behind the walls while also preserving much of the original charm that attracted them to the building in the first place -- heart pine floors, vintage mouldings, pocket doors and transoms. Because this unit was going to be primarily used as an Airbnb, the Klimalas wanted to make it beautiful, maintain the character of the building, while also specifying materials that would last and wouldn’t break the budget. Susan enjoyed the hunt of specifying these items and still coming up with a cohesive creative space that feels a bit French in flavor. Parisian style décor is all about casual elegance and an eclectic mix of old and new. Susan had fun sourcing some more personal pieces of artwork for the space, creating a dramatic black, white and moody green color scheme for the kitchen and highlighting the living room with pieces to showcase the vintage fireplace and pocket doors. Presenting a case study of a client located in Nagoya, Japan. This client resides in an 85 square meter, two-bedroom, two-living room residence. The overall style of the house incorporates a blend of Japanese wooden and Nordic modern aesthetics. The client discovered us through a Google search and sought our expertise in recommending and selecting lighting fixtures suitable for their living room and dining area. The client expressed a preference for localized lighting, indicating a high requirement for accentuating specific areas. After reviewing the floor plans and renderings provided by the client, we assisted them in making their choices. Starting with the dining area, which is a separate space occupying approximately 10 square meters, the client has a solid wood dining table measuring 1.8 meters in length. Their preference for warm lighting led us to recommend the PH5 Macaron Pendant Light in a Nordic modern style. This pendant light offers a wide range of color options, and the client personally selected a combination of white and orange, paired with warm light sources. The actual result of this combination is truly remarkable. As the client had additional auxiliary lighting such as light strips installed in the dining area, the pendant light primarily serves the purpose of focusing the light on the food, perfectly meeting the client's requirements. Moving on to the living room, the client also has light strips installed on the ceiling and track lights in place. They expressed a need for a floor lamp beside the sofa to provide localized lighting, as they enjoy reading in the living room. Hence, we selected a unique umbrella-shaped wooden floor lamp that complements the pendant light in the dining area. This choice harmonizes well with the overall style of the dining area, which showcases a Japanese wooden aesthetic. When the client received the products, they expressed their complete satisfaction with how well the lighting fixtures aligned with their needs. DILLON KYLE ARCHITECTS OFFICE BUILDING GIVES THE WOW FACTOR WITH ACCOYA PROJECT DETAILS Building Type: Office Building Completed: 2018 Architect: Dillon Kyle Architects Supplier: Universal Forest Products Millwork Shop: S&S Constructors Installer: Arista Construction Over the years, the Houston Museum District located in the Montrose neighborhood has morphed from a residential area into a lively art district, home to art galleries, museums, and aesthetically distinct buildings. When Dillon Kyle Architects set out to design their new office space across the street from the Houston Center for Photography, they needed creative solutions to fit a 5,000 square foot building plus parking on the lot’s small unique space. The three-story building takes the form of an inverted L, a configuration that allows for maximized parking on the narrow corner lot. The cantilever space was built to shade the cars from the hot Texas sun, while also creating a semi-public place that invites pedestrians to interact with the space and peer inside as they walk through the neighborhood. The interior design includes open ceilings, concrete walls, wood floors, residential scale furnishings and rugs and warm, neutral colors for a more industrial tone. The exterior has a commercial boxy look, so the team looked for creative cladding finishes to wrap the building and also serve as a rainscreen. After dismissing glass and papier-mâché options, the team settled on wood – Accoya® wood. “The idea was to use a material where you couldn’t tell where the patterns started and stopped, just one big continuous object,” said Peter Klein, architect at DKA. An abstract leaf-like pattern is carved into 2,500 eight-foot long by eight-inches tall and 11/16-inches in depth, Accoya wood boards wrapping the entire building. The leaf pattern serves as a gentle reference to the live oak trees that line the neighborhood. The rainscreen is made of G80 galvanized steel sheets offset from the building with the Accoya leaf boards attached to it. “We settled on wood, and specifically Accoya wood, because it is easy to mill, and we knew we were going to leave it unsealed,” said Klein. Because DKA had time, they inadvertantly put Accoya wood to the test by installing a four foot by eight foot sample wall on site. They watched the sample weather to a nice gray patina, which was the desired result. “Even left untreated, it didn’t warp or mildew or mold, and that let us know we were on the right path,” added Klein. The neutral gray tones coupled with its longterm durability, resistance to rot and insects made Accoya wood the ideal material for this project. The Accoya wood pieces were milled using a CNC machine, which programmed the patterns. This glimpse to the west is the only opening in the tightly enclosed courtyard. From its opposite aspect, the feature creates a welcoming gesture at the home’s front entrance. The slender rivulet of water trickles from the sandstone slab above onto a honed granite plane, set within a sandstone terrace In contrast, a second promontory courtyard commands a strong presence over its alpine setting, leaving the steeply sloping site undisturbed. Our clients occupied the first two floors of this Manhattan townhouse, converted to condos with coveted access to the outdoors via a patio. The overall space had been well-maintained, but was dated and didn't necessarily reflect the aesthetic of our clients. Our goal was to brighten the home with character alongside modern elements. In addition to a full kitchen renovation, this Manhattan townhouse renovation included installing new flooring; retiling and installing new fixtures in the bathroom and powder room; painting the walls; updating the staircase; renovating all the doors, including closets and to the back patio; and installing new lighting fixtures. EYE-CATCHING KITCHEN The kitchen in this Manhattan townhouse renovation is a galley-style space attached to the dining room. We wanted to connect the two in a more cohesive manner, so we built custom banquette seating benches in the dining room, with the table in the center acting as both a connector and divider. Light wainscoting on the base of the walls and wallpaper above contrast against the bright orange benches and ultra-modern light fixture. Gray Shaker-style cabinets and a true herringbone backsplash are paired with a farmhouse sink set in white quartz countertops for a contemporary take on farmhouse style. TOWNHOUSE CHARACTER For the aesthetic in this Manhattan townhouse, we combined elements of a variety of design styles: farmhouse in the kitchen, transitional in the bathroom, touches of modern throughout. But the one factor shared by all is the charm of character. Through striking and distinctively detailed stonework, water is portrayed in its various states and forms – atmospheric mist, single rivulets, cascades, and still pools. Two courtyards interlink the residence allowing each room to enjoy the visual landscape. In the entrance courtyard, the sound from a carved 24”x 24” cut-granite fountain reverberates throughout the walled space. Placed for gathering and quiet contemplation, a pin-wheel arrangement of sculptural, granite slabs provide a honed surface for sitting while providing year-round interest. Each stone was individually specified with intentionally spaced core fractures, utilizing the extraction method to serve as sculpted details. Large sandstone pavers, set in sand and cut in an irregular, but geometric fashion bring a sense of modernity to the space. Throughout the property, stone detailing seek to heighten one’s experience of the landscape and views. Upon the home’s entry, an 18” rectilinear cut in the freestanding stone wall frames a distant peak, creating a singular reference to the outside world in this encased space. Emerging from the center of an organically-shaped carved sandstone slab, water is carried along a narrow 2” runnel sandstone cap, disappearing into the framed horizon. This glimpse to the west is the only opening in the tightly enclosed courtyard. From its opposite aspect, the feature creates a welcoming gesture at the home’s front entrance. The slender rivulet of water trickles from the sandstone slab above onto a honed granite plane, set within a sandstone terrace In contrast, a second promontory courtyard commands a strong presence over its alpine setting, leaving the steeply sloping site undisturbed. A 12’x 40’ reflecting pool – a thin sheet of water over honed black granite – captures the form and silence of the everchanging natural environment on its taut surface. Along its edge, water flows over a ½” radius edge, disappearing into a recirculating slot. Commissioned by Italian artist Bruno Romeda, a bronze sculpture rests upon an elevated granite plinth. Along its western edge, designers crafted a two-tiered, infinity edge detail. In the first vertical drop, water flows between the pool and perimeter stone walls, landing onto an intermediate bench, while the second drop introduces a chamfered edge, allowing water to embrace the vertical relief without splashing. Sandstone terraces provide continuous access to the various landscape features of the garden. At the base of the battered perimeter walls, a sandstone path leads to a fire pit, encircled by lichen-covered boulders. Along the courtyard’s eastern perimeter, water appears to emerge from the hillside, fracturing and falling against the irregular vertical stone wall, melting in a curtain-like formation behind the spa. The colors, distinctive detailing and striking stonework were selected based on their appropriateness to the context. From above, a rectilinear pool lies behind the wall, silently mirroring the sky above and offering no ostensible connection to the structure or to its source.

Accoya was selected as the ideal material for this breathtaking home in West Vancouver. Accoya was used for the railing, siding, fencing and soffits throughout the property. In addition, an Accoya handrail was specifically custom designed by Upper Canada Forest Products. Design Duo Matt McLeod and Lisa Bovell of McLeod Bovell Modern houses switched between fluidity, plasticity, malleability and even volumetric design to try capture their process of space-making. Unlike anything surrounding it, this home’s irregular shape and atypical residential building materials are more akin to modern-day South American projects that stem from their surroundings to showcase concrete’s versatility.
