This cozy lake cottage skillfully incorporates a number of features that would normally be restricted to a larger home design. A glance of the exterior reveals a simple story and a half gable running the length of the home, enveloping the majority of the interior spaces. To the rear, a pair of gables with copper roofing flanks a covered dining area that connects to a screened porch. Inside, a linear foyer reveals a generous staircase with cascading landing. Further back, a centrally placed kitchen is connected to all of the other main level entertaining spaces through expansive cased openings. A private study serves as the perfect buffer between the homes master suite and living room. Despite its small footprint, the master suite manages to incorporate several closets, built-ins, and adjacent master bath complete with a soaker tub flanked by separate enclosures for shower and water closet. Upstairs, a generous double vanity bathroom is shared by a bunkroom, exercise space, and private bedroom. The bunkroom is configured to provide sleeping accommodations for up to 4 people. The rear facing exercise has great views of the rear yard through a set of windows that overlook the copper roof of the screened porch below. Humble and unassuming, this small cottage was built in 1960 for one of the children of the adjacent mansions. This well sited two bedroom cape is nestled into the landscape on a small brook. The owners a young couple with two little girls called us about expanding their screened porch to take advantage of this feature. The clients shifted their priorities when the existing roof began to leak and the area of the screened porch was deemed to require NJDEP review and approval. When asked to help with replacing the roof, we took a chance and sketched out the possibilities for expanding and reshaping the roof of the home while maintaining the existing ridge beam to create a master suite with private bathroom and walk in closet from the one large existing master bedroom and two additional bedrooms and a home office from the other bedroom. The design elements like deeper overhangs, the double brackets and the curving walls from the gable into the center shed roof help create an animated façade with shade and shadow. The house maintains its quiet presence on the block…it has a new sense of pride on the block as the AIA NJ NS Gold Medal Winner for design Excellence!

We specified CertainTeed Landmark Pro asphalt shingles in Granite Gray for the gable roof and Johns Manville .080 TPO for the flat roof. Both of these were installed over 4" polyisocyanurate insulation. We recommended this style of architectural asphalt shingles to map to the historic look of the buildings of this era; the flat TPO roof provides good heating and cooling efficiency and is indiscernible from the ground, so as not to take away from the aesthetic appeal of the gable roof. This roof also features red copper cleansing strips at the ridge and midway down the expanse to minimize algae or moss growth in this heavily treed and moisture-prone of Stony Creek, Connecticut.

This project focuses on enhancing the exterior of a home by seamlessly tying in new siding and trim with existing materials following the addition of a gable roof. The work ensures a polished, cohesive look that blends the old and new areas seamlessly, with a focus on durability and aesthetic appeal. Aluminum Trim Installation Custom Aluminum Trim Installation: Custom-bent aluminum trim will be installed on the following areas: Rakes Fascia Garage Door All existing aluminum trim on eave and rake edges, as well as the garage, will be removed and replaced with new aluminum trim coil. Gable Roof Addition Trim: Install new aluminum trim on the newly constructed gable roof addition for a fully integrated look. Garage Door Weather Stripping: Install white garage door weather stripping for improved energy efficiency and a clean, finished edge. Sealant and Finishing Touches All new trim will be sealed using #900 Solar Seal (Terpolymer sealant), color-matched to the trim for a seamless appearance and long-lasting protection. This project combines high-quality materials like CertainTeed Monogram siding and Cedar Impressions shake with expert craftsmanship to deliver a durable, stylish exterior upgrade. The result will be a cohesive look that enhances the home's curb appeal and stands up to the elements.

This larger home, constructed on Martha’s Vineyard, is a collection of informal, dormered gable components and grounding one-story, shed-roof elements that reduce its overall scale. Designed to take advantage of a gently sloping up-Island property, this 5500 sq. ft. (not including finished basement) six-bedroom home includes staggered floor levels that climb from the front of the site to the rear. Generous, open living space on the entry level -- anchored on the west end by a fireplace and on the east end by the kitchen -- borders a dining area that’s nestled under a roof which also shelters the adjacent wrap-around porch. A deck off the rear of the dining space extends around the kitchen and is easily accessible from the nearby family room, too. Bedrooms occupy the other above-grade levels, including, at the upper-most level, the master suite comprised of a study, roof deck, master bath, walk-in closets and the master bedroom. A clean-lined interior of warm neutrals sets a soothing tone in which the Island landscape is welcomed through expansive windows, porches and decks. Clad in white cedar shingles with a red cedar roof, the West Tisbury House will softly weather in-tune with its meadow site.
