Our client came to us during construction of her new home to help her with interior design and window treatments for the whole house. The living room, long and narrow with three window walls presented the greatest design challenge. Our plan started with the colorful palette of her prior home and the integration of several furniture pieces and a few window treatments from that home as well. In the living room, with such expansive views of the water we knew the window treatments on the door walls would have to be subtle to frame the view, not take away from it. In this room, privacy and light control (filtering the harsh sun reflecting off the water), were equally important. Traversing panels offer needed functionality but we had to balance the volume and stack back of the fabric that would be needed to cover the expansive windows/door walls. An unlined pleated sheer is a good way to accomplish this. The fabric we chose, an embroidered sheer provides subtle texture and a quiet backdrop allowing the outside to blend with the colorful blues and greens of the interior furnishings. Sofa, chairs, and chaise were all reupholstered in coordinating fabrics in blues and greens, not only our client’s favorite colors, but a means of bringing the outdoors in! The kitchen valance, one of our client’s favorites that we had custom made for her prior home, was resized to fit the new kitchen window.

This reimagined library, started its life as a gloomy, cluttered space with dark paneled walls, poor lighting, heavy drapes, and poor storage. The homeowners not only envisioned a lighter, more functional space, they embraced fresh ideas to accomplish their goals. Paint the wood walls? Check! Upgrade recessed lighting? Check! Re-stain wood floors to tone down the “orange”? Check! The wonderful collaboration coupled with the homeowners incredible artwork gave way to the light, airy, and, most importantly, functional space they craved.

These clients, an accomplished artist and the owner of a generational hops growing farm, were collaborative and trusting from the start. They conscientiously selected a team of Architect (Green Hammer), General Contractor (Cellar Ridge) and ATIID for furnishings and finishing touches. Each firm was able to meticulously manage their leg of the project, while collaborating wholistically with each other and the homeowners. The family farmhouse, lovingly named “Westwood,” was showing the wear one expects after serving a growing family for decades. The owner’s dream was to revive, open up, and breathe modern life into each space, while respecting the home’s heritage. One of our first collaborations was the light fixture that would grace the main two-story entry hall. HiiH Lights in Astoria, Oregon, was commissioned to bring “the function of light, the craft of paper, and the art of sculpture” to the home. Visiting the maker’s space – a massive barn on his coastal property – was such an inspiring adventure! Original work by the resident artist sets an ethereal tone in the space, and an antique bench handsomely blends the old with the new. A wall that divided the home’s living room and kitchen was removed, and the breezy and bright gathering room was born. Light walls, warm wood tones, cozy upholstery, clean lines and heritage elements create a welcoming atmosphere and invite lounging and conversation. The sun-drenched nook is the home’s main indoor dining area, with an extension table and sculpted chairs that are just right for family gatherings or morning rituals with the Sunday paper. The kitchen is a chef’s dream with every modern amenity, but its casual attitude is “let’s make a mess and eat!” The owner’s artwork graces the mantel over the new fireplace that was carved from a tree felled on the property, illustrating the thoughtful consideration of each element. The muted wool area rugs in the entryways and great room are hard-wearing for farm life, and the furniture’s classic lines, bold contrasting colors, deep seating and soft textures encourage cozy conversations or large group gatherings. The library is undoubtedly our favorite space in this home. Tucked in “speakeasy style” behind a hidden (wallpapered!) door in the moody wet bar, and drenched in deep green, the room offers a quiet retreat that hugs you in an embrace of books and family photos. The cozy settee nestled between the bookcases sits opposite a custom pair of modern cognac leather wing chairs. The area rug continues the storied look without the antique price tag with a piece from Loloi’s “Heritage Collection.” A little va-va-voom was requested for the powder bath and boy did we deliver! Custom wallpaper plays over original wainscotting and ceilings wrapped in more glorious green. The space evokes joy every time you open the door! A primary suite that would “transport us to another world” and be “classic yet modern, peaceful, collected and uncluttered” was a tall order. Our new furniture layout takes full advantage of the view of wine country hills and the Willamette River, welcomes fireside lounging, and serves as a calm respite for the lovely owners. Westwood Farmhouse truly was inspired by family, genuine love for home and graciousness for all who enter. For this kitchen remodeling project, the homeowner was looking to make their kitchen larger and more functional. However, the kitchen was the original to this old farmhouse, so it was important to them to preserve an older look and not go to modern looking. To accomplish this, we started by tearing out some walls to expand the kitchen out which also allowed us to add a counter eating area along one wall. We also tore out an old closet and converted that into a pantry space. The new cabinets were done in our Scandia door in a Carmel color from our Kitchen Solvers Classic Collection line. Next, we installed a Charisma linear tile backsplash and a quartz countertop in Topaz. To finish the new look, we added new Edgefield cabinet tab pull hardware. Now these homeowners have the new kitchen they have been dreaming of.

This master bath ‘Renovision’ came with three main requests from the homeowner: more storage, a larger shower and a luxurious look that feels like being at an upscale hotel. The Renovisions team accomplished these wishes and exceeded the clients expectations. Request number 1: more storage. The existing closet was reconfigured to accommodate better storage for towels and bath supplies making it both functional and attractive. The custom built pull-out hamper was perfect. The long vanity and center tower offers much more cabinet space and drawer storage compared to what they had, especially with the increased vanity height. Request number 2: A larger shower. Working within the existing footprint we were able to build a shower that is nearly a foot deeper as space was available. Creating a large rectangular cubby provides plenty of space for shampoos and soaps. The frameless sliding glass shower enclosure keeps the space open and airy while allowing the beautiful Carrera-look porcelain wall tiles to be the focus of this master bath. Request number 3: a luxurious look. Turning their once boring, builder grade bathroom into an upscale hotel-like space was challenging, however, not a problem for the Renovisions team and their creative ways of resolving design snags along the way. Re-locating the doorway to the bathroom was one way to create a more spacious flow in and out of the space. Having the right design to start was half the battle – installing the beautiful products right the first time to ensure a proper fit and finish worthy of the upscale feel is the other half. The delicate tile detail in the shower cubby is the ‘jewelry’ in the room – the soft curves of this 2-tone wave design tile adds a dramatic feel and enlightened mood this client loves. Overall, the homeowner was happy with every solution-based approach to all requests – their once dated builders bath is now bright, open and airy with a soft grey wall color adding to the soothing feel of this master bath.

Colorful and rich style When a repeat client shows up on your doorstep with his third home to furnish and wants to start from scratch and go really bold, you just embrace him, scoot him right up to the resource room, and don’t ask questions! I mean, who does not love a client that embraces velvet, leather, silk and wallcoverings? This lush, vibrant lounge space was all created from the want to really deep dive into something different, eclectic and more traveled. The original small, narrow, dimly lit room totally delivered on helping accomplish that mood. Mixing a little of that Ming dynasty-inspired strawberry red with a deep chocolate mohair on the sectional and cladding the room in a soft, amethyst woven wallcovering. We loved the interplay and “non-matchiness” that this space embraced. Lighting and art were both about telling a story in this room – accenting conversational opportunities and an almost gallery-esque feel. Designating a more dynamic and unusual, sculptural feel – from the harder lines of the statement floor lamp in the living room across to the sprawling, slightly modern bloom of the dining area fixture. Jewel of a space The area rug had to ground the already bold furniture and lend itself to the darker wood floors, and a dusky green wool proved the ticket. We loved the almost pixelated pattern the hand-knotted wool lent to the overall design. A little hint of oxblood, chocolate and blue picked up in accents elsewhere, but the tone of almost jade really caught us about this piece. Not enough can be said about the accent of a dining space either (which in terms of space planning was the only way to balance this long, narrow “hallway” of a room off the kitchen). Citron velvet on the low-profile chairs left the space feeling open, but fun for games and cocktail parties. Plus, the cerused wood dining table was a great complement – offering depth without a conflict to the existing flooring or nearby sectional. Being able to view this space as a whole was very important to us! From the selection of sconces carried throughout (that wonky placement was existing and with so little opportunity to add cans we had to play up the new fixtures in a way that make them feel purposeful and desirable.), to the balance of color and temperature in each furniture grouping. Sometimes working floor to ceiling in an existing space can pose a lot of unique challenges when it comes to furnishing projects. However, we loved that the client embraced our drive to really punch up the visual feel of this living/dining combo. Also, we know the enjoyment he gets from the finished product is a testament to hunting for the right pieces, designing with unusual and luxe fabric combinations, and managing the inclusion of budget-friendly surprises that always balance a job well done. The owners hoped for a larger shower. To accomplish this, we started by removing the compartmental walls of the existing shower. The new shower has a steam unit including aroma therapy, and Chromatherapy lighting. The shower was completed with a stainless steel electric-damper exhaust vent system, controlled within the shower. Next we installed: the tile on the walls, floor and ceiling of shower, the shower bench, and the clear glass enclosure. The bulky, old fiber glass tub was removed. We then installed a new under mount tub with solid stone deck, a stone back splash, and decorative wood panels matching the cabinetry. The wood panels are removable for access to the plumbing...beauty and function. Note the small entertainment area holding a television and sound system, across from the shower. The matching valance, skirts the recessed down lights. The unique high back splash is created with small, marble, brick-pattern tile, which enhances the two custom trim, built-in mirrors, matching the cabinetry. The recessed lights enhance the lovely tile wall, along with the beautiful sconce lights which create practical make-up lighting. Finally, we installed the new tile floor, and mosaic tile border, which becomes another focal point of this outstanding Master Bathroom. The owners were very pleased with the workmanship. Paneled refrigerator drawers were incorporated on both sides of the Blue Star indoor grills. The panels were made to continue the look for the inset cabinets used throughout the room.

2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY MERIT AWARD WINNER This couple had put up with their run down split level home for years. They lived in a convenient Arlington neighborhood within walking distance to the DC metro and suburban lifestyle. But they’d had it with their small, unattractive kitchen. They wanted a new look that opened the space up and offered a seamless connection to the rest of the first floor. Starting with small, dark 10’ x 10’ kitchen, the design team at Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes went to work. First, they moved an inside wall 18” into the adjacent living room. This provided added space for a new refrigerator, double wall oven and warming drawer. This kept all tall elements out of sight and created more counter space throughout the rest of the kitchen. Next, a partition between the kitchen and dining room was removed and got replaced with a large double side peninsula. Topped with an exotic granite counter, it is home to a 36” gas cooktop and wine chiller. It also includes glass display cabinets for the homeowner’s prized china. Use of taller and contrasting dark glazed cabinetry and spice cherry has accomplished the Arts & Crafts look the homeowners desired. A glass tile backsplash, hard wood floors and prairie style windows contribute to the theme as well. Finally, large windows and a skylight brighten up what was once a dark space. The extreme makeover of this kitchen has been such an inspiration to their neighbors that the clients are asked to show it off over and over.

The decision to replace the conventional oven and microwave with a start-of-the-art speed oven was made to save space while implementing an innovative appliance. The speed oven is located in the island, below the cooktop. It is centrally located in the kitchen with easy access to all cabinets and countertops. The property is a 700 square foot condo. The homeowner's goal was to have his 40+ year old unit transformed into a brand new space. To accomplish this, we gutted the entire unit; we replaced the popcorn ceiling with new drywall, replaced the old flooring with maple engineered wood flooring, removed the mirrored walls and painted the drywall a soothing neutral gray, and removed the kitchen walls and bulkheads to create an open concept. Additions include: Handsome crown moulding and custom baseboards, Sherwin Williams wall, ceiling and trim paint (the ceiling is NOT white), LED recessed light fixtures, custom island pendants, Quartz countertops, custom dining chandelier, custom shelving over the kitchen sink and custom "iron pipe" design to house existing telephone wires (building restricted the removal of existing phone line). Sometimes, additional features to an already great space - does wonders. As was the case for this wonderful family in Chatham. Already present was a great paver patio. What the owners wanted to accomplish with this project was to add a built-in grill area, complete with counters and storage - as well as adding a custom gas-start fireplace. The finished product delivered on all of their goals. We built the custom fire place and installed stone veneer siding, bluestone sides and hearth, wood storage boxes with a bluestone top and granite countertops to surround their built-in grill.
