This project is truly one of those designed by setbacks. The owners fell in love with the setting, sitting on a bank above the river, but a sewer easement through the center of the property, parallel to the road, cut the building envelope in half. Our goal was a 1,400 sq ft home with outside space on the river side of the home. We started with an attached garage concept, which is very desirable in our snowy climate, but it was forcing a compromise with no patio on the back of the house. We negotiated an agreement with the city staff to allow us to build a breezeway over the 25’ sewer easement. The breezeway was designed and constructed to be removable by forklift in 3 pieces, if it ever becomes necessary to work on the sewer line, buried about 20’ below grade. The owners had varying taste in the style of home they wanted, one on the more traditional end and one on a more contemporary bent. They also wanted low maintenance materials. The result is a simple gable form with over-sized knee braces and gable end vents for function as well as character. The home is finished with cedar shingle siding with a horizontal corrugated metal wainscot below. We opened the back of the house up with windows and sliding doors, giving great views into the trees and down to the river below. The greatest feature is the back patio perched on the bank with the sound of the river rising up from below.

Our Clients were ready for a complete overhaul of their existing finished basement. The existing layout did not work for their family and the finishes were old and dated. We started with the fireplace as we wanted it to be a focal point. The interlaced natural stone almost has a geometric texture to it. It brings in both the natural elements the clients love and also a much more modern feel. We changed out the old wood burning fireplace to gas and our cabinet maker created a custom maple mantel and open shelving. We balanced the asymmetry with a tv cabinet using the same maple wood for the top. The bar was also a feature we wanted to highlight- it was previously in an inconvenient spot so we moved it. We created a recessed area for it to sit so that it didn't intrude into the space around the pool table. The countertop is a beautiful natural quartzite that ties all of the finishes together. The porcelain strip backsplash adds a simple, but modern feel and we tied in the maple by adding open shelving. We created a custom bar table using a matching wood top with plenty of seating for friends and family to gather. We kept the bathroom layout the same, but updated all of the finishes. We wanted it to be an extension of the main basement space. The shower tile is a 12 x 24 porcelain that matches the tile at the bar and the fireplace hearth. We used the same quartzite from the bar for the vanity top. Overall, we achieved a warm and cozy, yet modern space for the family to enjoy together and when entertaining family and friends.

The goal was to create an elegant, inviting environment for a couple of empty nesters starting fresh with just their collection of Calders. The colorful, bold Calders sport red, blue, black and orange and would provide saturated pops of color in an otherwise soothing neutral color scheme. We cladded the fireplace in a rich slate and set about creating a perfect living room in which the Calders could truly hold court. A classic, lush sofa and buttery soft antique chairs beckon. The vases and lamps were incredible finds from a great antique showroom in New York City. An optical white on white Joseph Albers-esque silk rug from the venerable Doris Leslie Blau was also the perfect find. The custom Brett Design forest green side tables and orange cashmere throw pillows finish off the space with additional surprises of rich color. This recently completed outdoor living space was created for a really great family in Chatham. Their original backyard design included a deck surrounded by mulch planting beds. We demolished all original elements and constructed an all bluestone patio that ran the entire width of their home. This made it possible to double their usable space. We used uniformly sized all blue bluestone tiles. We built them an outdoor kitchen and bar - complete with grill, shelving, built-in trash can and refrigerator. Pearl Blue quartz was used for the counter top and we rounded the bar side in order to maximize sitting space. The perimeter of the patio received a 20" high sitting wall with a 2" thick bluestone tread cap. LED strip lighting was installed below the wall cap to provide accent lighting at night. At the yard entrance, we built (2) raised piers complete with centered light fixtures on top. The custom gas-start/wood-burn fireplace really sets this patio apart from most. By curving the hearth and hollowing out the interior, we were able to create a wood log storage area without sacrificing any of their usable space on the sides. The gas dial is concealed on the side of the fireplace and is operated by key. Throughout the entire patio you will see cultured stone siding that provides the perfect blend of continuity and complimentary colors. This Wooded Retreat project started with the removal of a large area of bamboo roots, re-grading the area after, and installing bamboo containment barrier. All root materials were be excavated and disposed of off site. We then graded the side yard to eliminate mounds and low areas, removed rocks and boulders which were be used on front bank. Grading was also done in preparation for fence installation. Bamboo containment barrier was installed from street down to back of property. 2 truckloads of top soil was hauled in to fill areas where bamboo roots were excavated. The newly installed topsoil was fine graded to prep for the fence and plantings. Tree work including tree trimming and tree removal throughout the site was done by Arborist Enterprises. This luxurious portion of this project included a complete landscape design featuring Trees and shrub installation with all disturbed ground covered with natural wood chips. Natural stone steps along driveway were installed using local gray/earth tone treads. The patio surface was installed using natural irregular flagstone, natural stone treads for steps, and PA Limestone boulders to retain grade around patio. The fire pit consisted of a natural stacked stone ring and ‘Zentro’ Smokeless Fire Pit insert. Natural stone paths were installed using natural large irregular flagstone slabs. All landscape lighting installed was Kichler LED light fixtures.

This farmhouse kitchen was designed for an active family that loves to entertain and likes to keep an eye on their menagerie of barnyard animals throughout the day. The pantry, behind the barn door, was carved out of a former cabinet space while the refrigerator was relocated to the former tiny pantry, after the two side fireplace was replaced with a once sided fireplace that now faces the family room. With the burning hazard eliminated, the island could be extended for much desired storage, prep space as well as a place for friends and family to perch while meal preparation is underway.

Copper abounds throughout this luxurious home. The woman of the house grew up in Arizona, where copper is abundant. It makes her happy. We love to use elements or pieces that are meaningful to our clients – it’s how one-of-a-kind interiors are created. The focal point of the entertaining is the commanding wood burning fireplace. Our blue ribbon winning design brings the materials and finishes from the exterior inside, creating a pleasing continuity. The entire great room has a surprising and bold cerise, yellow and gray color scheme. Rugs and ceiling coffers define its three distinct functional areas. This custom rug, made of gray wool with a cerise contrasting band, is perfectly sized for the space. The yellow and white transitional upholstered chairs are detailed with nailhead trim and yellow cording. The tufted ottoman in a fun pink and white geometric pattern can be used to put one’s feet up, as extra seating or a surface to place a tray of food and drinks. After many years of having no outdoor living space and dealing with overgrown plants and trees the owner’s decided it was time to revitalize their backyard. They knew they wanted a large sitting area with a wood burning fireplace, room for outdoor dining and a place for the grill. A connecting walk would be needed to get guests from the driveway to the outdoor space. Last but not least, the owners wanted the ability to and a reason for stepping out of their unusable patio doors. The designers decided from the start the fireplace would be the prominent feature and focal point for the entire project. A large fireplace accented with sitting walls and arbors was positioned to anchor the corner of the patio. Stone was chosen to set the fireplace apart as its own element. Brick was used for the sitting walls and brick accents were added to the fireplace to tie into the house. An inlaid herringbone brick detail was incorporated above the stone mantle to simulate artwork which is typically found above indoor fireplaces. Flagstone was used for the wall caps and hearth to match the patio and thicker flagstone tread stock was used for the mantle and top. The arbors were added to visually balance the pergolas at the opposite side of the patio. For the patio the designers created a series of offset spaces to help subtly divide the space into two areas, sitting and dining. Two large existing trees also help dictate the shape of the patio. Cut flagstone was chosen for the surface bordered by a double soldier edge of brick. The brick edging also surrounds a decorative gravel area topped with an urn fountain which provides a secondary focal point and the sound of water. Large flagstone treads were used for the steps leading to the previously unused patio doors. Opposite the fireplace a short walk leads to a square transition area with a statue chosen by the owner. The statue provides a strong focal point when entering from the driveway. A longer walk leads from this space along the house to the driveway. The pergolas and arbors were designed by the landscape designer as part of this project but were ultimately contracted separately by the owner. The larger square pergola was intended as an area for a bench or two separate from the main patio. The longer pergola was added later in the design phase to help provide shade to the interior of the house. The arbors at the fireplace were added to balance out the wood elements at the opposite side while adding additional architectural interest to the fireplace. While this project was predominantly hardscaping, planting and lighting were also incorporated into the design. Several large existing trees were retained and serious of smaller understory trees were added to help enclose the space. The designer’s took advantage of the large trees to place down lights on the branches to achieve a moonlight effect at night. Additional lighting was used on the pergola, to accent focal points, to up light the smaller trees and around the patio. Massed planting of Japanese forest grass provides bold foliage color for the shady garden. A mulch path leads off behind the fireplace to another garden and a secluded area ideal for a bench or small table and chairs.
