Our wonderful Baker clients were ready to remodel the kitchen in their c.1900 home shortly after moving in. They were looking to undo the 90s remodel that existed, and make the kitchen feel like it belonged in their historic home. We were able to design a balance that incorporated the vintage charm of their home and the modern pops that really give the kitchen its personality. We started by removing the mirrored wall that had separated their kitchen from the breakfast area. This allowed us the opportunity to open up their space dramatically and create a cohesive design that brings the two rooms together. To further our goal of making their kitchen appear more open we removed the wall cabinets along their exterior wall and replaced them with open shelves. We then incorporated a pantry cabinet into their refrigerator wall to balance out their storage needs. This new layout also provided us with the space to include a peninsula with counter seating so that guests can keep the cook company. We struck a fun balance of materials starting with the black & white hexagon tile on the floor to give us a pop of pattern. We then layered on simple grey shaker cabinets and used a butcher block counter top to add warmth to their kitchen. We kept the backsplash clean by utilizing an elongated white subway tile, and painted the walls a rich blue to add a touch of sophistication to the space.

Our client and her sister own a condo in Florida and although her sister lives there full-time, our client only comes to Florida for the winter and utilizes the guest room and a separate bathroom as her own. At the time, enthusiastic to be in Florida she went all out in decorating in the old Florida style with a green and yellow tropical feel including a plethora of palm trees (see before picture). All the furniture had to be from Tommy Bahama and even the light fixtures had a tropical theme. Fast forward to 2015 and our client was tired and bored in these surroundings and said to me, “what was I thinking!” She didn’t have the budget to change everything and I assured her that we could update her bedroom keeping the existing furniture. One of her previous decorating problems was the tiny window over the bed which she had covered by adding a faux canopy. Unfortunately, the fabric was thin and the window showed through. I tried to persuade her that a solution for the window issue could be a large painting over the bed but she wasn’t keen so we agreed to refresh the canopy with a more modern look. We started with fresh silvery-grey paint and glossy white trim. Using subtle greeny-blue bedding from Eastern Accents we extracted a simple palette and mixed in several patterns including a classic Greek key. There are geometrics in the pillows and a floral in the custom cornice and draperies and we found a fabric from the same color palette for the drapery behind the bed from Kravet. It has a beautiful sheen which reflects light and is heavily lined to cover the window. Our project manager added the wood trim to the cornice board. The modern chair is upholstered in a sea green herringbone while the table has an interesting story; my client loved the shape of the table but it was originally finished completely in gold leaf. Part of our update was to change everything metal such as door knobs and drapery hardware to chrome so our project manager offered to re-finish the table in silver leaf. Along the way we had a hiccup in the communication… she asked if the top was glass and was told it was but we didn’t realize that she hadn’t unpacked it so didn’t see the gold rim. On installation day we were surprised to see the gold rim against the silver legs! Happily, it was a really good error as the painting behind the chair has both gold and silver leaf and our error looks as though it were meant to be. We finished with turquoise blown glass lamps, several pieces of art, and a large floor mirror (not in photo). The client asked if she could choose some pretty accessories at local art fairs and one painting is by her artist brother-in-law. THE SETUP Imagine how thrilled Diana was when she was approached about designing a kitchen for a client who is an avid traveler and Francophile. ‘French-country’ is a very specific category of traditional design that combines French provincial elegance with rustic comforts. The look draws on soothing hues, antique accents and a wonderful fusion of polished and relic’d finishes. Her client wanted to feel like she was in the south of France every time she walked into her kitchen. She wanted real honed marble counters, vintage finishes and authentic heavy stone walls like you’d find in a 400-year old château in Les Baux-de-Provence. [Our Clients] We were so excited to help these new homeowners re-envision their split-level diamond in the rough. There was so much potential in those walls, and we couldn’t wait to delve in and start transforming spaces. Our primary goal was to re-imagine the main level of the home and create an open flow between the space. So, we started by converting the existing single car garage into their living room (complete with a new fireplace) and opening up the kitchen to the rest of the level. [Kitchen] The original kitchen had been on the small side and cut-off from the rest of the home, but after we removed the coat closet, this kitchen opened up beautifully. Our plan was to create an open and light filled kitchen with a design that translated well to the other spaces in this home, and a layout that offered plenty of space for multiple cooks. We utilized clean white cabinets around the perimeter of the kitchen and popped the island with a spunky shade of blue. To add a real element of fun, we jazzed it up with the colorful escher tile at the backsplash and brought in accents of brass in the hardware and light fixtures to tie it all together. Through out this home we brought in warm wood accents and the kitchen was no exception, with its custom floating shelves and graceful waterfall butcher block counter at the island. [Dining Room] The dining room had once been the home’s living room, but we had other plans in mind. With its dramatic vaulted ceiling and new custom steel railing, this room was just screaming for a dramatic light fixture and a large table to welcome one-and-all. [Living Room] We converted the original garage into a lovely little living room with a cozy fireplace. There is plenty of new storage in this space (that ties in with the kitchen finishes), but the real gem is the reading nook with two of the most comfortable armchairs you’ve ever sat in. [Master Suite] This home didn’t originally have a master suite, so we decided to convert one of the bedrooms and create a charming suite that you’d never want to leave. The master bathroom aesthetic quickly became all about the textures. With a sultry black hex on the floor and a dimensional geometric tile on the walls we set the stage for a calm space. The warm walnut vanity and touches of brass cozy up the space and relate with the feel of the rest of the home. We continued the warm wood touches into the master bedroom, but went for a rich accent wall that elevated the sophistication level and sets this space apart. [Hall Bathroom] The floor tile in this bathroom still makes our hearts skip a beat. We designed the rest of the space to be a clean and bright white, and really let the lovely blue of the floor tile pop. The walnut vanity cabinet (complete with hairpin legs) adds a lovely level of warmth to this bathroom, and the black and brass accents add the sophisticated touch we were looking for. [Office] We loved the original built-ins in this space, and knew they needed to always be a part of this house, but these 60-year-old beauties definitely needed a little help. We cleaned up the cabinets and brass hardware, switched out the formica counter for a new quartz top, and painted wall a cheery accent color to liven it up a bit. And voila! We have an office that is the envy of the neighborhood.

Nestled up to an equally stunning home bar is this one of a kind glass front custom wine cellar / wine room in Bel Air, Los Angeles, California. This trendy wine cellar is sleek with black wine racking, matching the black coated stainless steel frames in the glass front. Poplar wood was utilized for these wine racks, only to be finished with a modern / contemporary touch of staining them completely midnight black. This wine room screams luxury with its clean lines and hybrid style utilizing metal, glass and wood in varying colors and styles. Designed , built, and installed by Vintage Cellars, this wine cellar keeps your interest with many styles of display and storage. Along the top, individual bottle storage is perfect for those longer termed holdings. Directly below showcases two tiered coved trays, perfect for putting those prized bottles front and center. Directly underneath is a high reveal display row, keeping bottles angled properly to ensure wet corks for graceful aging. One level lower yet again leaves space for original wood cases. The jet black wine racking contrasts beautifully against the sprawling natural wood flooring. Space was left inside this mid-sized wine vault / wine room / wine cellar to make room for a entertaining table - perfect for opening and decanting your favorite bottles with friends. Even with the comfortable spaciousness designed into this wine cellar, it still holds 800+ bottles easily. Vintage Cellars worked with Noe Design Co on this project. They did a fantastic job with the custom stainless steel framing, door, and glasswork.. A beautiful consistency was kept with the dark metal and wine racks. The combination of white and grey marble in the home bar / custom bar, the utilization of mirrors, subdued grey wall coverings, and sleek black furniture, metal, and wood all showcase elegance at its finest. The cooling system in this wine cellar / wine room / wine vault / wine closet / wine wall / glass wine cellar / glass wine room / glass wine vault / glass wine closet / glass wine wall / modern wine room / modern wine cellar / modern wine vault is ducted in to the ceiling to maintain a cool, calm, and quiet environment. A constant 55 degree temperature and perfect relative humidity were maintained to ensure that the homeowner will be able to age their collection for years and years to come. Screen shades are great on a pergola. This outdoor living space wasn't used to its full capacity due to the annoyance of the sun's rays. Now that the outdoor screen shades are installed, the owners can utilize this beautifully landscaped backyard. The outdoor shades come in a variety of fabrics and opacities and can withstand outdoor weather conditions. The sun can be overwhelming at times with the brightness and high temperatures. Shades are also a great way to block harmful ultra-violet rays to protect your hardwood flooring, furniture and artwork from fading. THE SETUP Imagine how thrilled Diana was when she was approached about designing a kitchen for a client who is an avid traveler and Francophile. ‘French-country’ is a very specific category of traditional design that combines French provincial elegance with rustic comforts. The look draws on soothing hues, antique accents and a wonderful fusion of polished and relic’d finishes. Her client wanted to feel like she was in the south of France every time she walked into her kitchen. She wanted real honed marble counters, vintage finishes and authentic heavy stone walls like you’d find in a 400-year old château in Les Baux-de-Provence. Diana’s mission: capture the client’s vision, design it and utilize Drury Design’s sourcing and building expertise to bring it to life. Design Objectives: Create the feel of an authentic vintage French-country kitchen Include natural materials that would have been used in an old French château Add a second oven Omit an unused desk area in favor of a large, tall pantry armoire THE REMODEL Design Challenges: Finding real stone for the walls, and the craftsmen to install it Accommodate for the thickness of the stones Replicating château beam architecture Replicating authentic French-country finishes Find a spot for a new steam oven Design Solutions: Source and sort true stone. Utilize veteran craftsmen to apply to the walls using old-world techniques Furr out interior window casings to adjust for the thicker stone walls Source true reclaimed beams Utilize veteran craftsmen for authentic finishes and distressing for the island, tall pantry armoire and stucco hood Modify the butler’s pantry base cabinet to accommodate the new steam oven THE RENEWED SPACE Before we started work on her new French-country kitchen, the homeowner told us the kitchen that came with the house was “not my kitchen.” “I felt like a stranger,” she told us during the photoshoot. “It wasn’t my color, it wasn’t my texture. It wasn’t my style… I didn’t have my stamp on it.” And now? “I love the fact that my family can come in here, wrap their arms around it and feel comfortable,” she said. “It’s like a big hug.”

This project has been a labor of love for quite some time! The design ideas started flowing for this space back in 2016, and we are so excited to have recently completed the build-out process after our lengthy planning time frame. These wonderful clients completed a bathroom renovation with us last year, and we absolutely loved the charming, clean-lined farmhouse aesthetic we produced there. Wanting to carry that similar aesthetic into the kitchen, our clients hired us to transform their dated 90's builder-grade kitchen into a stunning showpiece for their home. While no major fixtures or appliances were relocated, nor were there major architectural changes, this space's transformation is a jaw-dropper. We began by removing the existing yellowed oak wood cabinets and replaced them with gorgeous custom cabinets from Tharp Cabinet Company. These cabinets are a very simple shaker style in a bright white paint color. We paired these fresh and bright cabinet with black hardware for a dramatic pop. We utilized the Blackrock pulls from Amerock and adore the playful contrast these pieces provide. On the backsplash, we used a very simple and understated white subway tile for a classic and timeless look that doesn't draw the eye away from the focal island or surrounding features. Over the range, we used a stunning mini-glass mosaic tile from TileBar that shimmers and showcases a variety of colors based on the time of day and light entry. The island is our favorite piece in this kitchen: a custom-built focal point from Tharp, painted in a gorgeous custom blue from Benjamin Moore. The island is topped with a dramatic slab of Arabescato from Pental Surfaces. On the perimeter cabinets, we've utilized the stunning White Fusion quartz, also from Pental. For final touches, we've utilized matte black wall sconces over the windows from Rejuvenation, and have a gorgeous sink faucet from Delta Faucet. Throughout the main level, we refinished the hardwood floors to bring them to a more soft, neutral brown color. New paint is carried throughout the house as well. We adore the bright simplicity of this space, and are so excited that our clients can enjoy this family friendly stunner for years to come!
