The hydrotherapy provided by a simple soaking tub is a natural and organic form of pain relief that works its magic in two primary ways. First, the experience provides the bather with the sensation of weightlessness and significantly relieves the body of the effects of gravity. The buoyancy of water reduces body weight by 90%, easing pressure on aching joints, muscles and bones. Secondly, the water serves as a medium for heat therapy. Soaking in warm water quiets the body and slows internal organs. Heat dilates blood vessels and increases circulation in the body, thus allowing enzymes and endorphins (the body’s natural pain relievers) to work more quickly and effectively. It also stimulates sweating and increases the elimination of toxins.

Set at pre-war, mid-rise apartment building amongst the hustle and bustle of New York City's Hell's Kitchen, the client's main objective was to construct a sanctuary and quiet space while incorporating their love of mid-century modern furniture. This perfect challenge for Yates Desygn allowed us to add life and visual stimulation to a limited footprint. In this space, we incorporated our client's existing furniture blending in new pieces to create a peaceful haven in the fast-paced city they love.

In a foyer of this magnitude the flooring needs to be visually stimulating in order to keep the space from looking empty. This pattern was designed to transition nicely to the solid oak wood floors in the kitchen. The Saltillo tiles were leftover from the original Bachelor house. We had to file them down to be level with the new wood floors and then we stained them 10 times to achieve the desired darkness. The end result is stunning.

Here is a newly completed project I've been working on. My charge was to make functional spaces in a basement that included a bar, TV space, game space, office space and music room. The client was sharing some photos he'd taken in subways in NYC, Chicago and London, among others. These exciting images of his stimulated an idea: What if we used the subway as a motif for the entire basement project? This concept was enthusiastically endorsed. In this project, luxury is a question of atmospheres made up of colors, intimacy, finely-worked details, and the ability to transform every kitchen into a masterpiece. The Pantheon project stems from plenty of passion mingled with a dose of sentimentality. Aesthetics and quality are becoming increasingly prominent in interior design; it is stimulating to grasp the different interpretations of the spaces defining the compositions displayed in this catalog. The Royal style, packed full of special characteristics and small details that come together to make a one-of-a-kind product.

This prefabricated 1,800 square foot Certified Passive House is designed and built by The Artisans Group, located in the rugged central highlands of Shaw Island, in the San Juan Islands. It is the first Certified Passive House in the San Juans, and the fourth in Washington State. The home was built for $330 per square foot, while construction costs for residential projects in the San Juan market often exceed $600 per square foot. Passive House measures did not increase this projects’ cost of construction. The clients are retired teachers, and desired a low-maintenance, cost-effective, energy-efficient house in which they could age in place; a restful shelter from clutter, stress and over-stimulation. The circular floor plan centers on the prefabricated pod. Radiating from the pod, cabinetry and a minimum of walls defines functions, with a series of sliding and concealable doors providing flexible privacy to the peripheral spaces. The interior palette consists of wind fallen light maple floors, locally made FSC certified cabinets, stainless steel hardware and neutral tiles in black, gray and white. The exterior materials are painted concrete fiberboard lap siding, Ipe wood slats and galvanized metal. The home sits in stunning contrast to its natural environment with no formal landscaping. A parking court was conceptualized as the main element for the front yard’s new look. A new arrival walk, stylized balanced gardens to strengthen the classic architecture theme, lighting, and all expressed with traditional materials and details were additional objectives in the front yard’s design program.
