We approached this new build as a seamless, full-service collaboration between architecture and interiors. Every decision—structural, spatial, and aesthetic—was shaped with intention, not to mention collaboration, since our contractor was also our client. Our contractor said, “make the rooflines simple and direct the water away.” His wife said, “I like color.” Check, and check. The bold exterior lines of the home both contrast with and recede into the woods around it, and the interiors are layered with cheerful hues, custom details, and playful patterns. Each room carries its own moment of cheer, while the overall palette ties together into a cohesive, uplifting whole, not unlike its namesake rainbow.

camilleriparismode projects and design team were approached to rethink a previously unused double height room in a wonderful villa. the lower part of the room was planned as a sitting and dining area, the sub level above as a tv den and games room. as the occupants enjoy their time together as a family, as well as their shared love of books, a floor-to-ceiling library was an ideal way of using and linking the large volume. the large library covers one wall of the room spilling into the den area above. it is given a sense of movement by the differing sizes of the verticals and shelves, broken up by randomly placed closed cupboards. the floating marble fireplace at the base of the library unit helps achieve a feeling of lightness despite it being a complex structure, while offering a cosy atmosphere to the family area below. the split-level den is reached via a solid oak staircase, below which is a custom made wine room. the staircase is concealed from the dining area by a high wall, painted in a bold colour on which a collection of paintings is displayed. photos by: brian grech

The Marshbrook Residence is a full-scope remodel of a 6,000-square-foot home in Thousand Oaks, California, reimagined through interior architecture, landscape design, and furniture specification. The project was approached as a comprehensive residential renovation, shaping the house and grounds into a more cohesive living environment with a strong connection between architecture, landscape, and outdoor use. The design extends beyond the interior to create a fully integrated outdoor setting organized around a generous pool terrace, spa, covered cabana, dining area, and layered planting. Broad decks, stepped lawns, structured hardscape, and defined gathering spaces give the property a clear sense of order while supporting the relaxed, indoor-outdoor lifestyle central to contemporary Southern California living. Rather than treating the residence and site as separate elements, the project brings them together as a unified composition. The result is a refined residential environment shaped around openness, entertaining, and everyday use, with landscape, architecture, and furnishing working together to give the property a more complete and intentional identity.

The custom cabinetry in a deep walnut finish anchors the space, accented by elongated brass hardware that introduces subtle refinement. The floor level of new entry addition is just one step up from the exterior ground level. This way, the elevation change up to the main floor can occur inside the house, allowing not only for increased visual separation between the front door and the living spaces, but also for a beautiful entry foyer lush with wood detailing. Composed of oak and custom-milled hemlock over a hidden iron structure, these one-of-a-kind railings are the brainchild of collaboration between us, Royal Dumo, and his team of skilled carpenters. The hemlock matches the other interior trim details, and the oak is stained to match the refinished red oak floors. Saturday July 18, 10:00 to 11:30am | Dedham Lowder Brook by Keith LeBlanc and John Haven of Keith LeBlanc Landscape Architecture A series of structured gardens and terraces were designed in conjunction with a new Greek Revival home set on twelve acres within a residential neighborhood in suburban Boston. The unusual scale of the property conveys the feel of secluded New England woodland, highlighting the dramatic beauty of the existing mature trees, which were carefully cultivated and catalogued by a previous owner with ties to the Arnold Arboretum. The gardens provide spaces both grand, as in the front approach, and intimate, as the walled rear garden, and mediate between the architecture and the woodland setting. Pathways surrounded by rhododendrons and viburnums lead visitors to a hedged pool garden and orchard meadow. The result of this close collaboration among owner, architect, and landscape architect is a subtly crafted landscape at harmony with its formal and naturalistic cues. SLDarch: The shaded Main Entry, tucked deep into the shadows, is approached from a rising stepped garden path, leading up to a gentle, quiet water feature and custom stainless steel, glass and wood pivot entry door...open this and venture in to the Central Foyer space, shrouded by curved concrete & stainless steel structure and orienting the visitor to the central core of this curvaceous home. From this central orientation point, one begins to perceive the magic and mystery yet to be revealed in the undulating spatial volumes, spiraling out in several directions. Ahead is the kitchen and breakfast room, to the right are the Children's Bedroom Wing and the 'ocotillo stairs' to Master Bedroom upstairs. Venture left down the gentle ramp that follows along the gurgling water stream and meander past the bar and billiards, or on towards the main living room. The entire ceiling areas are a brilliant series of overlapping smoothly curved plaster and steel framed layers, separated by translucent poly-carbonate panels. This combats the intense summer heat and light, but carefully allows indirect natural daylight to gently sift through the deep interior of this unique desert home. Wandering through the organic curves of this home eventually leads you to another gentle ramp leading to the very private and secluded Meditation Room, entered through a double shoji door and sporting a supple leather floor radiating around a large circular glass Floor Window. Here is the ideal place to sit and meditate while seeming to hover over the colorful reflecting koi pool just below. The glass meditation room walls slide open, revealing a special desert garden, while at night the gurgling water reflects dancing lights up through the glass floor into this lovely Zen Zone. "Blocking the intense summer sun was a prime objective here and was accomplished by clever site orientation, massive roof overhangs, super insulated exterior walls and roof, ultra high-efficiency water cooled A/C system and ample earth contact and below grade areas." There is a shady garden path with foot bridge crossing over a natural desert wash, leading to the detached Desert Office, actually set below the xeriscape desert garden by 30" while hidden below, completely underground and naturally cooled sits another six car garage. The main residence also has a 4 car below grade garage and lovely swimming pool with party patio in the backyard. This property falls withing the City Of Scottsdale Natural Area Open Space area so special attention was required for this sensitive desert land project.

Design rendering for a detached accessory dwelling unit in Contra Costa County, California, by Taragano Design & Build. The roof is a single slope pitched toward the neighboring property line, which keeps the tall wall facing the owner's yard. That orientation determines everything else. Full height glass and the transom band go on the high side where the ceiling is tallest and the view is the client's own garden, not a fence. Windows are placed to avoid the neighbor entirely on the low side. On a small lot, privacy in both directions is a design constraint before it is a courtesy, and it is easier to solve with window placement than with landscape screening that takes years to fill in. The soffit is stained wood rather than painted. It is the one warm material on an otherwise plain building, and it sits where it is seen from below on approach. Planting was kept drought tolerant with permeable paths, which suits both the water constraints most of our clients work within and the lot coverage limits that apply once a second structure is added.
