Spridon - simple modern house, blending in the surrounding The building consists of a 75m² ground floor and a 35m² basement. It is a radical reconstruction of an old country house, from which only the basement frame and frame elements on the ground floor were kept. The design intention was to create a space characterized by transparency so that the greenery in which it is integrated is perceived to the maximum from the interior of the space. This is achieved with the addition of a metal frame structure and energy efficient glass shell. Due to the orientation of the building, which was a basic object of the study, the sun is not hitting directly inside the ground floor, which however remains pleasantly illuminated throughout the day. Evening and night hours are the most flattering depicting the glowing character of the structure. Existing elements and new frame were covered by metal panel. In the bedroom a glass space has been created for reading and meditation, with direct view to the thick greenery. On the whole the building is equipped with hi-tech mechanical systems controlling heating-cooling, electric installation, lights, curtains etc. It is very high in terms of energy efficiency due to heating pumps systems, insulation and energy glass shell.

Meaning “line” in Swahili, the Mstari Safari Task Lounge itself is accented with clean wooden lines, as well as dramatic contrasts of hammered gold and reflective obsidian desk-drawers. A custom-made industrial, mid-century desk—the room’s focal point—is perfect for centering focus while going over the day’s workload. Behind, a tiger painting ties the African motif together. Contrasting pendant lights illuminate the workspace, permeating the sharp, angular design with more organic forms. Outside the task lounge, a custom barn door conceals the client’s entry coat closet. A patchwork of Mexican retablos—turn of the century religious relics—celebrate the client’s eclectic style and love of antique cultural art, while a large wrought-iron turned handle and barn door track unify the composition. A home as tactfully curated as the Mstari deserved a proper entryway. We knew that right as guests entered the home, they needed to be wowed. So rather than opting for a traditional drywall header, we engineered an undulating I-beam that spanned the opening. The I-beam’s spine incorporated steel ribbing, leaving a striking impression of a Gaudiesque spine.

The core of the office features a beautifully crafted wood L-shaped desk, providing a surface area for productivity. This is complemented by custom storage integrated into a focal wall. To enhance the architectural interest and elevate the space, a coffered ceiling has been incorporated into the design. One of the standout features of this office is the abundance of natural light. This ensures a bright and energizing environment for focused work. The overall ambiance is further enriched by the chosen blue paint color, which creates a very inviting and serene atmosphere.

It’s warm in Southern California, and that’s exactly the feeling Andy and Liz sought to maintain inside their new Tuscan-style home as they embarked on a modern interior makeover. After all, the couple had two small children and a dog to consider. Empty and austere simply wasn’t a good fit for the young family whose interests include photography, art and lots of Lego’s. Andy, an engineer, became intrigued with Cantoni after driving past the Irvine location on his daily commute. It wasn’t long before he and Liz decided to venture into the Los Angeles showroom, and that’s where they met Bernadette. By all accounts, the trio made for great collaboration, and the project that began in February 2012 is still a work in progress today. “We were impressed by Bernadette,” says Andy. “We liked her and her work, and she won us over.” The project began with pictures sent and an in-home walk-through where measurements were taken. The couple knew they wanted furnishings for the living, dining and family rooms, as well as the media room and a study. They were open to art and accent pieces, and hoped to incorporate natural elements into the mix. Bernadette set to work. “It was fun touring our LA showroom and listening to Liz and Andy discuss their likes and dislikes. One thing was for sure,” she adds, “the Laguna Sectional was going in their theater room even if we needed to knock out a wall!” UpstairsPhase I of the job is complete (as you can see from the stunning images), but instead of parting ways, Andy and Liz decided to have Bernadette help re-imagine the master bedroom and kitchen, next.
