This wooded, lakeside home plays an influential role in the homeowners artistic vision as a magical realist painter. By providing an environment that comes alive with the sights and sounds of nature, the artist is able to closely study as an explorer would by uncovering, recording, and rearranging the beauty of the natural world and the beauty of human beings. This connection to nature comes from a horticultural interest manifested in the daily ritual of digging and pruning in her Connecticut garden. A daily ritual of physical immersion with the dirt and the worms of life contrasts with the otherworldly fantastical spaces the artist creates for her paintings. The paradoxical character of these two places imbues her paintings with an alluring mystery.

Family room - traditional family room idea in Chicago

It wasn’t necessary to overthink things when Axis Mundi designed interiors for an apartment at Brooklyn’s glass-sheathed 1 Grand Army Plaza, the luxury building by Richard Meier already endowed with all the “starchitect” bells and whistles, as well as drop-dead stunning views of Brooklyn, the harbor and Prospect Park. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. But minimal color accents and pattern also sidestep what could have been a potentially antiseptic environment, making it tactile, human and luxurious. 2,200 sf Design Team: John Beckmann, Richard Rosenbloom and Nick Messerlian Photography: Adriana Buffi and Fran Parente © Axis Mundi Design LLC

The idea of this project was to create a special environment that stimulates all senses in the human body, an environment that is vibrant and most importantly interactive for all ages. We began by searching for the right materials to create a specific feeling of time and space. Placement of the water feature was designed by studying how the customer used their home. The waterfalls and streams connect separate outdoor spaces and accommodate for all views outdoors and indoors. A sense of mystery is designed into every detail in this water feature. The layout of the ponds play accordingly with the sun for excellent reflections, and each rock formation has time designed into it. The environment is inviting, and interactive. Each person that walks out to explore the environment has his or her curiosity rewarded by discovering plant life, trickling streams, and several waterfalls only to be discovered by the inquisitive explorer. The William Gropper Paddling Oil Painting captures a powerful figurative scene through expressive brushwork, dramatic movement, and a rich, moody palette. The composition centers on a figure engaged in strenuous motion, reflecting Gropper’s distinctive approach to portraying working people and the human experience. Framed in gold, the painting brings depth, character, and historical presence to a living room, study, gallery wall, or curated art collection. This piece is now available to purchase on our website. #WilliamGropper #WilliamGropperArt #Paddling #OilPainting #OriginalPainting #OriginalArtwork #AmericanArt #AmericanModernism #FigurativeArt #ModernistArt #VintageArt #FineArt #CollectibleArt #ArtCollector #StatementArt #WallArt #ArtForInteriors
