These Liberty Hill homeowners had one very distinct issue with outdoor food prep. Facing due west, their grill space on the patio was subject to the hottest sunlight of the entire day. To resolve the issue, we added on a custom shade roof, built specifically for evening grilling! This angled metal roof will keep the elements at bay, so the grill master can attend to his or her duties in complete comfort.

School settings require students to maintain concentration and sit still for long periods of time throughout the day. Needless to say, that can be tough not only for teenagers but adults as well. Harnessing sheer roller shades to cover classroom windows helps ensure sunlight doesn’t become a hindrance in the path of education, but a facilitator of better learning. By diffusing sunlight that enters the classrooms, students don’t suffer the negative cognitive impact of harsh glare that’s strainful on the eyes. Instead, they enjoy the benefits sunlight plays in maintaining alertness and attentiveness. Classroom window shades that provide better privacy also help to keep outside distractions from interfering with the lessons, keeping students focused on the subject at hand. The right use of colorful roller shades can also complement sensory cues for focus created by the classroom environment. The portrait is by Bradshaw Crandell. The subject is "Brenda", a New York socialite. Painted in 1958 it is in the style of classical portraiture. The original frame is hand carved and French in origin. Bradshaw Crandell was the in-house cover artist for Cosmopolitan magazine1935-1946. the Cosmopolitan cocktail is named after him. The crystal candelabra date from the 1920's and were purchased from a very old Druid Hills estate. They required significant restoration as they were cracked, filthy, and missing parts. The "square grand" piano dates to the 1840s and is heavily inlaid with satinwood amongst other woods. Manufactured in New York city it has highly unusual curved legs.

The decision to go small is about her personal values, committing to a lifestyle, and living within her means. The move to design small is a subjective decision that weighs in on a number of factors that can’t possibly be summed up in one statement, but the obvious benefits jump to the front...easier to maintain, less cleaning, less expensive, less debt, less environmental impact, less temptation to accumulate. Her design requirements were simple, small footprint less than 1000 sq. ft., garage below the living area, and take advantage of the amazing view. It’s smaller than the average house, but designed in a way that it won’t feel like a shoebox. My client thought long and hard about downsizing her home and her lifestyle, and she couldn’t be happier

An overall view of the completed kitchen. One of the two vertical posts that we made material to cover is structural. The coffered ceiling detail is new as well, made here in the shop. Grid layout was subject to structure and ceiling sprinklers.

The clients chose elegant clean-lined pavers in a random pattern for the new patio areas surrounding the pool.
The clients love their new patio and pondless waterfall. Not only do they find themselves outside more often enjoying nature’s sights and sounds, they have room for parties and entertaining.
In fact, their perfect backyard was there all along -- it just needed a vision to bring it out.
This compacting process is not done by many contractors. The idea is that using compacted soil the base will not settle, so you don’t have to wait to install a patio around a new pool. Many contractors still install concrete slabs under their patio. In our experience we find this does not work well. Settling still occurs under the slab allowing the patio to crack or settle.
After the base materials were finished, we installed chestnut-hued durable pavers from Cambridge (Sahara). These particular pavers have little or no color fade and the random design pattern adds interest to the patio. The pavers’ protective coating means these clients will have a clean-lined modern look. Even after being subjected to snow plowing, de-icing salts and normal wear, they will keep their color and beautiful appearance.

View of terraced yard to living room with city views. The house was created for everyday living, intimate meetings, and occasional entertaining. It’s meant to be a ‘place’ to share ideas with others and foster a sense of community. Architecturally, the building is designed to capture the views, bring in the daylight, and establish a sense of calm through simplicity and open space.
