This open-plan renovation in Melbourne's inner suburbs pairs dark wenge cabinetry in Polytec's rich board finish with a honed Caesarstone benchtop — a combination that is at once grounded and refined. This Victorian floor was discovered at a house in Swiss Cottage in the London borough of Camden when the current owner took the old carpet up. It was in need of substantial restoration to bring it back to its former glory however we have had really good results from restoring similar floors so we were confident it could be done. The carpet had literally just been taken away so we had to remove the gripper rods, underlay and deal with the adhesive which we managed to tackle using a strong solution of Tile Doctor Remove and Go which was left to dwell and penetrate the glue for ten minutes before being scrubbed in. Once the glue was removed the tiles were given a thorough clean using Tile Doctor Pro-Clean using the same process of leaving it to soak in and then actively scrubbing it into the floor to get the tile and grout as clean as possible. The floor was then rinsed and stubborn areas re-treated until we were satisfied with the result. The last cleaning step was to use a steam cleaner to pull as much dirt out of the pores of the tiles as possible and a wet vacuum to extract the liquids and get the floor as dry as possible and we also re-grouted where necessary due to the damage caused by the gripper rods. We also gave the Victorian tiles in the entrance lobby a thorough clean using the same process, although they had not been covered in carpet they were still in need of a deep clean. The floor was left to dry and when we returned the whole floor was ready to be sealed and for this we used five coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go which adds a nice shine to the floor as well as providing a surface seal that will help protect the tiles from stains going forward. For the entrance lobby we used two coats of Colour Grow which doesn’t add the shine but as an impregnating sealer we felt it would perform better with the wear at the front of the house. This was achieved by applying existing character-defining features from the house such as octagonal massing, columned porches, steep roof slopes, and decorative shingle patterns. Complimentary architectural ornamentation was introduced to highlight the Queen Anne style and diminish the scale of the elevator rise. Interior and exterior access challenges were graciously overcome without sacrificing authentic period detailing. The addition begins with exterior entry at ground level. A half stop down to the basement provides access to a “wheelchair wash/dog wash” station and game room. A half stop up brings the elevator to the first floor followed by traditional stops at the second floor and attic/owner’s suite. This project was to create a “virtual art gallery exhibit” featuring all six. Have any of you noticed that a lot of shops and galleries don’t seem to be open these days ;) - well I thought with the help of some online and my open digital assets I might be able to create at least a part of the experience. (Albeit without the wine and cheese snacks) So here is my virtual exhibit. I painted all the originals on 12 x 12 canvas. The “exhibit” would be what 24 x 24 inch framed prints would appear like together. The quality of the images used to produce the prints is high enough to go up to 36 x 36 with good confidence. Framed those are substantial pieces of artwork in either residential or office settings. In the future I’ll try going bigger and share the quality with you. Also what is showing in this virtual setting would be traditional framing and matting over giclee, acrylic sealed or metal prints.
