Presenting a case study of a client located in Nagoya, Japan. This client resides in an 85 square meter, two-bedroom, two-living room residence. The overall style of the house incorporates a blend of Japanese wooden and Nordic modern aesthetics. The client discovered us through a Google search and sought our expertise in recommending and selecting lighting fixtures suitable for their living room and dining area. The client expressed a preference for localized lighting, indicating a high requirement for accentuating specific areas. After reviewing the floor plans and renderings provided by the client, we assisted them in making their choices. Starting with the dining area, which is a separate space occupying approximately 10 square meters, the client has a solid wood dining table measuring 1.8 meters in length. Their preference for warm lighting led us to recommend the PH5 Macaron Pendant Light in a Nordic modern style. This pendant light offers a wide range of color options, and the client personally selected a combination of white and orange, paired with warm light sources. The actual result of this combination is truly remarkable. After years of use (and abuse) as the shared kids’ bathroom, this space was in need of a total transformation. The homeowners wanted an update that would be suitable for young adults and guests alike and, most importantly, they wanted finishes, fixtures and a style that would stand the test of time. We selected the dark gray porcelain floor tile not only for its timeless beauty, but also for its durability and low maintenance. Likewise, we chose porcelain tiles for the shower walls and installed them in a stacked pattern to the ceiling to make the room feel taller. Seeking suitable lighting fixtures for each space, their primary focus was on pendant lights that would provide localized illumination, ample brightness, seamlessly blend with the room's style, and align with their modern, minimalist, and sustainable design preferences. After reviewing the client's floor plan, we identified the areas that required pendant lighting installation: the living room, balcony, two bedrooms, and dining area. Through multiple consultations, we finalized a lighting plan that predominantly featured bamboo and rattan pendant lights, perfectly capturing the desired ambiance. Starting with the living room, a cozy 21 sqm space, we recommended a delightful bamboo pendant light with a touch of rustic charm, ideal for providing localized illumination. Moving to the balcony, which exudes a vintage vibe, we suggested a popular Southeast Asian-inspired bamboo pendant light, making it a captivating centerpiece. For the bedrooms, we proposed two distinct pendant lights. The first choice was a captivating lotus leaf-shaped bamboo ceiling light, offering a remarkable decorative effect. A small pass-through allowed view into the adjacent family room, but otherwise the two spaces were closed off from one another. The existing espresso stained cabinetry was attractive, but it darkened and narrowed the kitchen. The homeowners wanted the kitchen to feel more connected to the other main level living spaces. Creating more light and improving organization and storage were must haves for the new design. They also requested relocating the pantry from under the stairs and longed for a ventilation system that would vent the cooking smells outdoors rather than throughout the inside of the house. Our design involved removing a portion of wall between the kitchen and living room. This one change made it feel larger, more open and bright. It also connected the kitchen to the living room and allowed the two spaces to flow freely into one another. This new open area allowed us to extend the granite countertop to create a peninsula/bar that provides additional seating. To improve the existing lighting plan, we added new LED recessed lights, under-cabinet lighting, and pendant lighting over the peninsula. The selections were integral in making the kitchen feel lighter and larger. Our clients chose maple cabinetry with an oak stained tumbleweed finish paired with creamy granite countertops, and a pearl tumbled travertine backsplash. A few standout features include a set of floating shelves, concrete farmhouse sink, and mercury glass pendant lights. Flooring throughout the first floor was updated to an easy to maintain wood-look vinyl plank floor.
