Richard Herman is in the hospitality business and owns several upscale hotels in Florida and in other states as well as cattle ranches in both Florida and Missouri. Their farm in Ocala is by farm their most unique. The property serves as a 4-H demonstration project for the purpose of children’s education. They have been working with the Academy Prep of St. Pete which is dedicated to inner-city youths that are selected on the basis of need and achievement. Wife Diane spends her time on the farm raising Gypsy Vanners, a diminutive draft horse named after the job they did in Eastern Europe, pulling the wagons (vans) for gypsies that wandered across the continent. On the Ocala farm, there are several mules with a unique profession. Richard had visited the Hearthstone display at a Log & Timber Home Shows at the Orlando Convention Center many years ago. He was impressed that Hearthstone had stayed in touch with him over the years by mailings, invitations to shows, and periodic phone calls. When the time came to start serious consideration of the design of barn, Hearthstone responded promptly and professionally to Richard and Diane’s requests for information and a review of their ideas for their barn, which would serve as the centerpiece for their new farm. They wanted a multipurpose facility that could accommodate an educational environment and a large hall suitable for the fundraising events for his charities. Richard wanted a barn that reflected the look and feel of barns built at the dawn of the 20th century. Besides the rustic chicken houses and vegetable gardens, they have completely renovated a 1020’s era farmhouse to be as historically correct as possible and serves as the entry to the farm. “They very careful to feel us out, get comfortable with our capabilities, and be convinced that we could perform as promised,” said Project Manager John Ricketson of Hearthstone. Design Process There were some initial drawings that gave us a start on the basic shape and size of the barn. From there, it was a process of narrowing down the uses of each area and the spans that could be achieved. The barn was going to have the traditional “board & batten” exterior siding and a metal roof. There is a cantilevered ‘hay hood” on the north gable end above the large sliding barn doors that open into the foyer and horse stalls. The wings house a combination of areas, beginning with the large restrooms to accommodate crowds for events. Other parts of the wings have garage areas for the farm vehicles, feed room, tack room, wash rack, storage, offices, and smaller restrooms. Keeping with the look and feel of the turn of the century, Hearthstone developed a process for giving the timbers a surface texture that mimicked the circular cuts of timbers that had just come out of an old sawmill. This was easier said than done. Randy Giles guided his millwright (Wolfgang) in designing a machine that would do this effectively. The barn was delivered in October of 2014 and was erected over the course of two weeks, thanks to a hardworking crew (Eric Foster) and near-perfect weather. After the Hearthstone crew completed the erection and roof dry-in, it was time for the local carpenters to step up and install some light conventional framing on the gable ends before applying the roof fascia and exterior board & batten siding. Next came the big sliding barn doors, plumbing, electrical, heating, and cooling. Large rustic fixtures were hung from the great hall roof timbers. Exterior The board & batten siding was cypress and allowed to turn color naturally as rain hit it and the sun started working on it with UV rays. This method causes a much grayer look closer to the ground and less so where the roof overhang provides protection. The North end has some large limestone boulders and planters arranged around the pad with tall pampas grass. The planters provide casual seating before events and during outside receptions. The entire area was sodded with lush St. Augustine grass and split rail fences were added to enclose the barn area. The corrugated metal roof was a special order material that immediately rusted after being exposed to moisture. The layer of rust protects the metal from the elements. Interior The board & batten theme was carried throughout most of the interior with the timbers left natural to show off the circular saw texture. All of the tongue & groove decking was shipped in advance to allow the local painter to pre-stain it with a dark brown transparent stain that is a beautiful background to the light color Eastern White Pine timbers. “Everything was unique in this project” said Project Manager John Ricketson. “The setting on a small demonstration farm close to Ocala, the multipurpose design, the circular saw texture on the timbers.” The Hermans are very proud of their farm’s outcome. Next month, we have Jo Dee Messina coming in to help with a fundraiser for a local center for abused kids. Folks love the farm, ...... but that barn gets all of the attention. The beautiful shingle home was built several years prior, but progress stalled and the interior was never fully finished off, creating more of a weekend crash pad than second home. We had 4 months to fully furnish and accessorize the 4+ bedroom home before they hosted a large family reunion. We tackled a function problem first. The home, with its open floor plan, had multiple types of flooring, which only served to chop up the space. Worse, most of the flooring was cream carpet and not suitable for waterfront living. We replaced the mismatch with durable driftwood floors that will stand up to years of sandy feet and party spills. We selected and installed all the finishing touches - furniture, window treatments, accessories, bedding and art. And we beat our reunion deadline by a week, giving the homeowners a chance to enjoy it all to themselves before the guests arrived

Inspiration for a mid-century modern bathroom remodel in San Francisco

This house was still under construction when I began working with the client. She had tried colors which were more suitable for interiors, and had wanted some blue on the exterior of the house. We selected an historic Benjamin Moore blue to pull out the blue in the stone facing of the garage, but an earthy gray green was used for the Hardie Shingle. The columns were painted a tan color, as well as the trim around the window frames, and the window box details, and rakeboards under the roofline. Since she had white window frames, Dove White trim was added to the columns to highlight some architectural details. The house feels at home in its setting, and the rich stain on the door and garage add drama, while still feeling very natural. Since this photo, some additional landscaping has been added . THE SETUP The original L-shaped guest bathroom, primarily utilized by the client’s young nephews, presented several design challenges. The entry door’s placement at the top of the stairs created an awkward flow, while the lack of natural light and the sectioned-off toilet and shower area contributed to a cramped and dimly lit ambiance. As they traveled, inspiration turned into multiple renovation phases kept cohesive with our firm's design and construction. First the kitchen was opened up for their comfort and to maximize the incredible sea & marsh vistas, then the master bed made into a bed/bath suite, then the living room modernized. RENOVATONS: The in-house kitchen design maximized both practical comfort and entertainment which included extending the island and relocating the sink to the end of the island. Condo bylaws usually limit coring through floor slabs so the island was raised to accommodate the necessary plumbing underneath. To see the incredible sunsets over the marsh, the contiguous room walls were shortened and kitchen counterspace added. We fabricated rock maple custom cabinetry in a muted washed grey stain to capture the subtle definition of the wood grain. Storage was accommodated in for a butlers pantry with pullout trays to for practical reachable convenience. The kitchen's focal point is a custom niche surround for the Thermador gas range made practical for cooking incorporated uncials and spice access. A gorgeous tile backsplash the owner selected added the final panache and glitz which also complements the Cambia quartz countertops. Appliances are a 36" subzero refrigerator, Fisher Paykel two drawer dishwasher, Thermador 36" gas range suitable for creating delicate sauces, a custom hood, and a stainless drawer microwave. MASTER BATH renovation transformed two contiguous rooms into a luxury master suite. Removing several walls, we were able to design for a spacious double sink vanity and include a personalized makeup center while fitting the new shell floor tiles seamlessly to match the master bedroom flooring. Custom cabinetry with oak match booked lateral grain drawers form a unique monolithic style that flows as a tree would from one end to the other. Satin frameless glass doors were added to the shower and water closet for an airy - spa feel, while functioning for privacy. LIVING ROOM Entertainment cabinetry were added for travel mementos and electronics along with the removal of the traditional fireplace. That’s what happened in this remodeling story. Our clients purchased a home built in 1983 with the plan to remodel the kitchen to suit their needs and tastes. The galley style kitchen was positioned at the center and rear of the main level and had an eat-in area at one end and a pantry at the opposite end. A small pass-through allowed view into the adjacent family room, but otherwise the two spaces were closed off from one another. The existing espresso stained cabinetry was attractive, but it darkened and narrowed the kitchen. The homeowners wanted the kitchen to feel more connected to the other main level living spaces. Creating more light and improving organization and storage were must haves for the new design. They also requested relocating the pantry from under the stairs and longed for a ventilation system that would vent the cooking smells outdoors rather than throughout the inside of the house. Our design involved removing a portion of wall between the kitchen and living room. This one change made it feel larger, more open and bright. It also connected the kitchen to the living room and allowed the two spaces to flow freely into one another. This new open area allowed us to extend the granite countertop to create a peninsula/bar that provides additional seating. To improve the existing lighting plan, we added new LED recessed lights, under-cabinet lighting, and pendant lighting over the peninsula. The selections were integral in making the kitchen feel lighter and larger. Our clients chose maple cabinetry with an oak stained tumbleweed finish paired with creamy granite countertops, and a pearl tumbled travertine backsplash. A few standout features include a set of floating shelves, concrete farmhouse sink, and mercury glass pendant lights. Flooring throughout the first floor was updated to an easy to maintain wood-look vinyl plank floor. Several new storage options were added including new cabinetry where the old pantry used to be, which accommodates the microwave in an upper cabinet as well as storage for small cooking appliances so they don’t take up space on the counters. Our very busy clients turned to us to help them remodel the kitchen in their twenty year old home. While the layout was good, and the cherry cabinetry looked fine on the the surface, they wanted to make some important updates. The cabinets were starting to show some wear and tear and did not have any of the bells and whistles they desired (soft close drawers, pull-out shelves, a wine rack, and file drawer storage). Dated laminate countertops, an inefficient island, lack of a suitable backsplash material, and a need to replace appliances led them to this remodel. While the kitchen was basically gutted, we did not need to reconfigure the space other than making a slight change to the island. We enjoyed helping our clients select creamy maple cabinets, a gorgeous Quartz counter by Cambria, neutral stone backsplash in a linear pattern, and striking dark hardwood floors throughout the first floor. Finishing touches included cabinet pulls, lighting (we especially love the oversize lantern above the table), and custom valances and chair cushions.
