There are thousands of tree species all over the world and all these trees share the same anatomical features. All trees have trunks, branches, intricate rooting systems and leaves that make up their core systems. The inner bark, specifically the phloem is the digestive system that passes the food through to other parts of the tree. This part of the tree has a very short life, and it turns into cork before merging with the outer layer of bark when it dies. The cambium cell layer produces new tree bark and wood as the tree grows and this is generated from the hormones that come from the leaves and pass to the inner layer. Sapwood is tasked with moving water to the leaves of the tree and as the wood ages, it transforms into heartwood, which is in the tree center. The heartwood is the main support of the tree structure and though it no longer grows, it won’t decay or become frail as long as it is protected by the outer layers. The Tree Root System One of the most important parts of the tree is its root system. These are found in the first three feet of soil around the tree and can extend as much as four times further away than the total circumference of the tree crown. The roots collect minerals and water from the ground, store food for the tree, and help secure it to its spot in the ground. When a family of four purchased this 1956 mid-century modern home in Woodbrook Highlands, they saw beyond its dated renovations to the architectural heritage beneath. Originally designed by William Landsberg—a protégé of Breuer and Gropius—the home carried the DNA of modernist design, but had lost its way during an earlier remodel. Working alongside Place Architecture: Design, Greenleaf was honored to help restore this home’s architectural integrity. The full-scope renovation included updates to the kitchen, primary suite, bathrooms, and garage, as well as extensive exterior work—from siding and windows to doors and trim—each chosen to reflect the home’s original mid-century modern character while improving its performance and livability. Inside, walls were opened to create better flow between the kitchen and dining room, with a new peninsula and counter seating to suit modern family life. Slate tiles in the kitchen complement the original stone flooring, while walnut cabinetry and warm green-gray tones nod to the home’s natural surroundings. On the exterior, decayed cedar siding and outdated stucco were replaced with sustainable composite cladding made of rice hulls and recycled plastic—selected to mimic the original tongue-and-groove look with less maintenance. Trim made from fly ash, larger energy-efficient Marvin windows, and sleek new doors completed the transformation. Set on a sloping lot, the home now opens beautifully to its surroundings. Sliding doors and thoughtfully designed terraces create a strong indoor-outdoor connection. From the color palette to the materials, every choice was made with long-term durability, beauty, and the home’s mid-century soul in mind. This client was working with a contractor that Ancient Elements Stoneworks has worked with for years. With the help of the contractor and Ancient Elements’ employees the clients were able to make their dream kitchen a reality. This kitchen is unique by having two different materials, one on the perimeter and another on the island. On the perimeter they have a granite that is called White Jaguar and on the island the granite is Terra Nova. These two materials play off each other’s colors and really bring this kitchen to life. Another unique part of this kitchen is the raised bar in the middle island. Ancient Elements Stoneworks was able to help the client and the contractor make this a reality by designing different supports and making sure the clients dreams came true.
