We removed three walls to open this kitchen up to the great room and breakfast area so the family and guests could visit while meals are being prepared. The custom cabinetry, designed by Bay Area Kitchens, was meticulously hand crafted to our exact specifications by Wood-Mode Custom Cabinetry in Kreamer, PA. A medium gray stain was applied to the solid walnut 1" thick doors and drawer fronts. The cabinets were designed and accessorized to maximize storage space and convenient access, including various sizes and depths of drawers, pull-out racks, tray dividers and a heavy-duty mixer base. The built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator, combination convection steam oven and single convection oven, 48" rangetop with six dual burners plus a flat-top griddle, and microwave drawer are the heart of this true gourmet kitchen. Appropriate appliances are Wi-Fi connected for maximum convenience. Topping off the custom cabinetry are Cambria quartz countertops, plus two solid walnut countertops with "live" edges by Grothouse. We also installed an automated LED lighting system including cabinet interior lighting, under-cabinet lighting, and LED recessed cans, all controlled by Lutron's RadioRA wireless lighting control system. All the lighting can be controlled by any of the five wall panels, or by an iPhone or iPad. The cabinets are also equipped with an integrated stereo sound system completely concealed within the cabinets. In our world of kitchen design, it’s lovely to see all the varieties of styles come to life. From traditional to modern, and everything in between, we love to design a broad spectrum. Here, we present a two-tone modern kitchen that has used materials in a fresh and eye-catching way. With a mix of finishes, it blends perfectly together to create a space that flows and is the pulsating heart of the home. With the main cooking island and gorgeous prep wall, the cook has plenty of space to work. The second island is perfect for seating – the three materials interacting seamlessly, we have the main white material covering the cabinets, a short grey table for the kids, and a taller walnut top for adults to sit and stand while sipping some wine! I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend time in this kitchen?! Cabinetry With a tuxedo trend look, we used Cabico Elmwood New Haven door style, walnut vertical grain in a natural matte finish. The white cabinets over the sink are the Ventura MDF door in a White Diamond Gloss finish. Countertops The white counters on the perimeter and on both islands are from Caesarstone in a Frosty Carrina finish, and the added bar on the second countertop is a custom walnut top (made by the homeowner!) with a shorter seated table made from Caesarstone’s Raw Concrete. Backsplash The stone is from Marble Systems from the Mod Glam Collection, Blocks – Glacier honed, in Snow White polished finish, and added Brass. Fixtures A Blanco Precis Silgranit Cascade Super Single Bowl Kitchen Sink in White works perfect with the counters. A Waterstone transitional pulldown faucet in New Bronze is complemented by matching water dispenser, soap dispenser, and air switch. The cabinet hardware is from Emtek – their Trinity pulls in brass. Appliances The cooktop, oven, steam oven and dishwasher are all from Miele. The dishwashers are paneled with cabinetry material (left/right of the sink) and integrate seamlessly Refrigerator and Freezer columns are from SubZero and we kept the stainless look to break up the walnut some. The microwave is a counter sitting Panasonic with a custom wood trim (made by Cabico) and the vent hood is from Zephyr.

I built this on my property for my aging father who has some health issues. Handicap accessibility was a factor in design. His dream has always been to try retire to a cabin in the woods. This is what he got. It is a 1 bedroom, 1 bath with a great room. It is 600 sqft of AC space. The footprint is 40' x 26' overall. The site was the former home of our pig pen. I only had to take 1 tree to make this work and I planted 3 in its place. The axis is set from root ball to root ball. The rear center is aligned with mean sunset and is visible across a wetland. The goal was to make the home feel like it was floating in the palms. The geometry had to simple and I didn't want it feeling heavy on the land so I cantilevered the structure beyond exposed foundation walls. My barn is nearby and it features old 1950's "S" corrugated metal panel walls. I used the same panel profile for my siding. I ran it vertical to match the barn, but also to balance the length of the structure and stretch the high point into the canopy, visually. The wood is all Southern Yellow Pine. This material came from clearing at the Babcock Ranch Development site. I ran it through the structure, end to end and horizontally, to create a seamless feel and to stretch the space. It worked. It feels MUCH bigger than it is. I milled the material to specific sizes in specific areas to create precise alignments. Floor starters align with base. Wall tops adjoin ceiling starters to create the illusion of a seamless board. All light fixtures, HVAC supports, cabinets, switches, outlets, are set specifically to wood joints. The front and rear porch wood has three different milling profiles so the hypotenuse on the ceilings, align with the walls, and yield an aligned deck board below. Yes, I over did it. It is spectacular in its detailing. That's the benefit of small spaces. Concrete counters and IKEA cabinets round out the conversation. For those who cannot live tiny, I offer the Tiny-ish House. Packed with amenities and home automation, this studio truly maximizes the use of the space. It features color-adjusting lighting and a sound system throughout. The kitchen includes a built-in water filter/dispenser, Miele washer dryer, BlueStar range, paneled Miele dishwasher and an air fryer/microwave speed oven on a roll-out shelf in a pantry. In the bathroom, a phone app-controllable shower with body sprays, hand shower, oscillating rain showerhead, a steam system, bidet toilet, a drawer lighted floating vanity. For the bedroom, an automatic bed system, desk and remote opening closet by Ori. Lighted automatic window shades, deep well window frames to conceal a window AC (and cord) and a high-def big screen that sits perfectly inside the wall unit that is the backside of the automatic closet. There's also a fully adjustable electric fireplace.

The only real good season was spring and fall. Midwest Construction converted this screened in space into an all season space to use 365 days per year. Midwest Construction to remove existing screen panels and haul away. Supply and installed Oasis All Season Model 2600 walls systems with high performance Cardinal Glass system engineered specifically for Joyce Manufacturing. Clean up and haul away all construction debris. All permits pulled and previous footings meet engineering codes for city specifications.

Designed to maximize the site’s breathtaking views, it is carefully sited to blend into its wooded setting while opening fully to expansive views. On our first visit, we found a secluded forest glade with stunning vistas of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains perched atop a high seaside bluff. Preserving and enhancing this singular landscape as the surrounding neighborhood fills in with development was central to our design. The approach is intentionally restrained—the home does not reveal itself entirely upon arrival. The house is composed of two wings that cradle the meadow, making it the most important “room.” Interior spaces are oriented towards the lush landscape and impressive views framed by mature trees. The structures are kept close to the perimeter, leaving the center of the site unbuilt. A covered bridge with a green roof acts as a front porch, linking the upslope garage/office with the main house. A gentle stair flows through the gap between the structures, drawing visitors into the clearing. The floorplan is highly efficient, carefully tuned to the family’s daily routines. Each room is exactly suited to its purpose, yet no larger than needed. An open corner with double-height windows creates a jewel-box dining room. Free of a corner structure, the home expands to encompass the covered patio for outdoor cooking and dining, plus easy access to the kitchen, encouraging year-round outdoor living. Human-scale moments are intentionally created, from a stairway window seat with peekaboo views to a covered outdoor extension of the great room that fosters a cozy relationship between interior and exterior. Much of the light-filled interior is wrapped in clear-finished fir, giving it a warm glow even on rainy winter days. White oak cabinets and black soapstone countertops add warmth to the kitchen. The built-in furniture in the library loft and the cold-rolled steel fireplace surround were crafted by the owner’s father, an expert woodworker, increasing the connection between the home and its occupants. The second story includes the primary suite with treehouse vibes. Located on a steep slope in a landslide-prone area, the Edmonds Overlook overcame numerous technical and engineering challenges to address vehicle and fire access, stormwater and erosion mitigation, and potential earth movement.
