This residential kitchen project was performed in conjunction with Legacy Custom Homes/RSD, Frank Ponterio Interiors, and NuHaus/Exclusive Woodworking. The goal of this project was to fabricate and install marble slabs in a fashion that mimicked the custom millwork in the rest of this estate home on the Northshore of Chicago. John Tithof and Jason Cranmer, along with the fabrication production team, executed this project on behalf of Tithof Tile & Marble. The client wanted the panels to appear as if carved from dimensional stone blocks rather than the classic full height stone backsplash. One of the primary focuses was keeping the client involved through the templating and layout process to ensure they knew what their project would look like before anything was cut or installed. The evolution of this process has changed in recent years. Gone are the days of blue tape and visualizing the completed job. With the recent introduction of the revolutionary Perfect Match and Slabsmith software programs we have the ability to digitally layout every slab project and create a virtual representation of the project for approval prior to cutting.

A&E Construction. This Pennington NJ remodel of a master bath en-suite features marble basketweave tile detailing and a generous walk-in shower area. One memorable aspect of this design is the continuous marble slab that simultaneously serves as a tub deck and continues into the shower area to serve as a bench seat. Drawing directly upon stylistic details from the furniture designs of Gustav Stickley, this kitchen was custom designed, and crafted in quarter-sawn, white oak. The raw cabinets were then ‘fumed’ with ammonia, reproducing an original process, to achieve this rich, authentic color. Architect Seth Leeb and Jaeger & Ernst worked to get the details "right" creating a new kitchen in the G. Stickley furniture style. With access to the Craftsman Farms, Seth was meticulous in transforming details from the Stickley furniture to cabinets. From the stove cabinetry through the peninsula and Inglenook to the kitchen sink, detail prevailed in the design. Each mutton is mitered at the joining point as Stickley would prefer. Colorful and rich style When a repeat client shows up on your doorstep with his third home to furnish and wants to start from scratch and go really bold, you just embrace him, scoot him right up to the resource room, and don’t ask questions! I mean, who does not love a client that embraces velvet, leather, silk and wallcoverings? This lush, vibrant lounge space was all created from the want to really deep dive into something different, eclectic and more traveled. The original small, narrow, dimly lit room totally delivered on helping accomplish that mood. Mixing a little of that Ming dynasty-inspired strawberry red with a deep chocolate mohair on the sectional and cladding the room in a soft, amethyst woven wallcovering. We loved the interplay and “non-matchiness” that this space embraced. Lighting and art were both about telling a story in this room – accenting conversational opportunities and an almost gallery-esque feel. Designating a more dynamic and unusual, sculptural feel – from the harder lines of the statement floor lamp in the living room across to the sprawling, slightly modern bloom of the dining area fixture. Jewel of a space The area rug had to ground the already bold furniture and lend itself to the darker wood floors, and a dusky green wool proved the ticket. We loved the almost pixelated pattern the hand-knotted wool lent to the overall design. A little hint of oxblood, chocolate and blue picked up in accents elsewhere, but the tone of almost jade really caught us about this piece. Not enough can be said about the accent of a dining space either (which in terms of space planning was the only way to balance this long, narrow “hallway” of a room off the kitchen). Citron velvet on the low-profile chairs left the space feeling open, but fun for games and cocktail parties. Plus, the cerused wood dining table was a great complement – offering depth without a conflict to the existing flooring or nearby sectional. Being able to view this space as a whole was very important to us! From the selection of sconces carried throughout (that wonky placement was existing and with so little opportunity to add cans we had to play up the new fixtures in a way that make them feel purposeful and desirable.), to the balance of color and temperature in each furniture grouping. Sometimes working floor to ceiling in an existing space can pose a lot of unique challenges when it comes to furnishing projects. However, we loved that the client embraced our drive to really punch up the visual feel of this living/dining combo. Also, we know the enjoyment he gets from the finished product is a testament to hunting for the right pieces, designing with unusual and luxe fabric combinations, and managing the inclusion of budget-friendly surprises that always balance a job well done. What the client says “From the moment that Cheryl arrived, I felt that she was definitely the designer that I needed to help facilitate & execute my vision for the space. I’m not the “cookie cutter” type, and I immediately realized that Cheryl had a knack for envisioning ideas that were unique, yet tasteful, timeless, and sophisticated.” From its beginnings as a plain Jane envelope, this combination living/dining space becomes a study in texture and color!

Our one of a kind kitchen design brings together a contemporary craftsman feel into this kitchen that is highlighted with an amazing range wood and custom island featuring a specialty raised bar.

Specialty shaped windows such as these paired, arched windows can present a challenge when it comes to creating a window treatment. The windows were unified with custom shaped, wrought iron drapery hardware in a finish that complemented the room’s decor. A template was made of the arched shaped windows and sent to the drapery hardware manufacturer along with a design sketch of the treatment to aid in the planning of where the welded mounting brackets were to be located. Once the rods were fabricated, the rods were sent to the drapery workroom to assist with the custom fabrication of the window treatments. The fabric and trim selected maintained a somewhat formal yet clean, monochromatic color scheme for the room which is adjacent to the living room, where the fabrics and trim were repeated in a different configuration to flow with the dining room’s window treatments.

We designed the grain pattern to have just a hint of rustic, but it is still clean enough that you can convincingly use it in a modern setting. REDEFINING DURABILITY The most important specification for determining the durability of vinyl flooring is the thickness of the wear-layer. The best wear-layers are made of thick, clear virgin PVC, which covers the paper print-film that gives the floor its unique appearance. Once the wear-layer wears through, the paper is damaged and the floor will need replacement. Most vinyl floors come with a 8-12 mil wear-layer (0.2-3 mm). The top commercial specs in the industry are higher, at 20-22 mil (0.5 mm). A select few manufacturers offer a "super" commercial spec of 28 mil (0.7 mm). For Modin, we decided to set a new standard: 40 mil (1.0 mm) of premium virgin PVC. This allows us to offer an industry-leading 20 year Commercial Warranty (Lifetime Residential), compared to nearly all other commercial vinyl floors' 10 year Commercial Warranty. Beyond our superior wear-layer, we also use a patented click mechanism for superior hold, and a ceramic-bead coating. SIZE MATTERS Wider and longer planks create a sense of space and luxury. Most vinyl floors come in 6" or 7" widths, and 36" or 48" lengths. For Modin, we designed our planks to be 9" wide, and 60" long. This extra large size allows our gorgeous designs to be fully expressed. DETAILS THAT COUNT We made sure to get all the details right. Real texture, to create the feel of wire-brushed wood. Low sheen level, to ensure a natural look that wears well over time. 4-sided bevels, to more accurately emulate the look of real planks. When added together they help create the unique look that is Modin. DESIGNS THAT INSPIRE We spent nearly a year just focusing on our designs, to ensure they provide the right mix of color and depth. Focusing on timeless wire-brush and European Oak styles, as well as more contemporary modern washes, our collection offers truly beautiful design that is both functional and inspiring.

The overflow spa is built into the floor of the room and the water level is 6 inches above the floor. When the spa overflows the water is captured in a hidden catch basin and re-circulated back into the spa. This entire perimeter overflow spa is finished in a mix of iridescent and non-iridescent blue colored glass tile. All of the lines of the tile run true throughout the entire spa. This means you can follow a single line of tile up the front of the spa, down the interior wall, across the floor, up and over the seating, and finally out the back. These lines display a high level of craftsmanship, and can be seen running true through the spa no matter what direction you look at it from. A custom cut template is used for the radius of the interior steps in order to make sure the cut tiles blend together perfectly as they curve around. Tile is blended across right angles of interior walls with the use of a special quarter round tile. The glass tile work in this perimeter overflow spa is of the highest quality and ever little detail was carefully planned and installed masterfully. The interior of the spa features two customized king and queen chairs made specifically the client and his wife. Each chair features a total of seven massage jets. Three are aimed at their back; two for the calf muscles and two more are foot massagers. In between the king and queen chairs is a bench seat, which features more massage jets aimed at the lower back. On the opposite side of the bench are two round steps to aid in comfortably getting in and out of the spa. Fiber optic lighting is not only incorporated into the spa but also the floor and walls. Holes were drilled into the floor around the spa and fiber optic lights were inserted to be flush with the tile of the floor. The lights continue into the interior of the spa and are installed flush with the spas glass tile finish. The lights emerge from the spa and make their way up and around the walls. The result is a brush stroke of light that begins on the floor makes its way through the spa and up onto the wall. Weaving the fiber optic lighting into the floor and through the glass tile of the spa was a challenging feat but produced wonderful results. The lighting combined with the shimmer of the iridescent glass tile and overflowing water creates a very elegant indoor spa fit for a king and queen.

| STAIRS | Note: Absolutely No exposed hardware. A blade of pressed white Baltic Birch white washed to a 20% opacity lines each run of solid white oak waterfalls between landings. If there was such a stairs to heaven this would be pretty close to what I would imagine. A subtle palette of tonal warm whites provide beautiful transition space between each floor. Kudos to the mad talents of @caisleydevelopments @bisongoods for helping transform an idea after several rounds of drawings, sketches, finish sample reviews, mock-ups, site meetings to evaluate clearances ensuring detailing is not compromised. A perfect match to the hardwood flooring at each landing - it's a success of its own to be able to execute such a high level of finishing within an incredibly ambitious timeline. Having to wait between trade installs, template, cut, test fit, scribe, protect and cover then rewind and repeat. This 1990's home, located in North Vancouver's Lynn Valley neighbourhood, had high ceilings and a great open plan layout but the decor was straight out of the 90's complete with sponge painted walls in dark earth tones. The owners, a young professional couple, enlisted our help to take it from dated and dreary to modern and bright. We started by removing details like chair rails and crown mouldings, that did not suit the modern architectural lines of the home. We replaced the heavily worn wood floors with a new high end, light coloured, wood-look laminate that will withstand the wear and tear from their two energetic golden retrievers. Since the main living space is completely open plan it was important that we work with simple consistent finishes for a clean modern look. The all white kitchen features flat doors with minimal hardware and a solid surface marble-look countertop and backsplash. We modernized all of the lighting and updated the bathrooms and master bedroom as well. The only departure from our clean modern scheme is found in the dressing room where the client was looking for a more dressed up feminine feel but we kept a thread of grey consistent even in this more vivid colour scheme. This transformation, featuring the clients' gorgeous original artwork and new custom designed furnishings is admittedly one of our favourite projects to date!
