"I purchased the Hickory stair tread and risers and they came quicker than the delivery date promised!. There was no damage and no need for further sanding. I simply applied one coat of "natural" color stain and 3 coats of clear satin and they were ready to cut to size and install. The cutting was time consuming because each step had to be cut individually to fit the location it was going into, but the end result was fantastic!!. I recommend Hardware Lumber for anyone thinking of redoing their stairs!!!" Steve

Just finished up the vanity in the master bathroom of my house. It is made from wormy American Chestnut with walnut hinges, handles and pulls. I wanted something unique and wanted to make every piece on the vanity (except the top which is a stone top). Buying hinges and handles just didn’t seem right for a piece like this so I decided to make them myself from walnut. Time consuming and challenging, but worth it in the end. I wanted an old look for the hinges, like the hammered style strap hinges of the past. So on those, I whittled on them with a pocket knife to give them that rustic, handmade appearance. The drawer boxes were made with 3/4” wormy oak sides with 1/2” plywood bottoms. I also made the wood slides from oak.
I took down all of this wood from an old house that a friend of mine had on his place, dating well back into the 1800’s. The home was filled with beautiful tongue and groove American chestnut walls and flooring, and I was fortunate enough to be able to salvage some for myself. The past lives on in my new home.

The best way to figure out how to put your finished basement to use is to determine what your home is missing. Working out and keeping on track can be very time consuming and the thought of working out in a crowded gym does not make the situation any better
No excuses if you have a workout room with your own bathroom and refrigerator –right?

This photo is showing how we treated a soffit that it proved too costly and time consuming to move. A crown moulding build up was implemented to integrate it all around the room. The full overlay/ hybrid cabinet frame takes an unframed moment here at the double oven cabinet- instead substituting traditional overlay for the top cabinet. It was the quieter visual choice that preserved storage best in this case.

When this Mattawan family moved into their new home it came with an unappealing, non-functional fountain. In a bargain with their 4-year old, the family decided a koi pond would replace their time consuming, high-maintenance indoor aquarium. We were able to replace their existing unsightly fountain with a small lower maintenance koi pond and waterfall.

rotating each tile to find where the glitter would show the best when placed under the lighting was time consuming, but SOOO worth it!

Beautifully dyed cellulose yarns, hand-placed and pressed onto a metallic foil, are the lines that form the chevron pattern of Reed. While time consuming, laying each yarn individually creates natural irregularity on the wallcovering’s surface and in glimmers of light reflected from the metallic foil underneath. Assembled in a traditional chevron with 6-inch wide bands, this novel technique creates sweeping vertical movement that appears seamless on the wall. A specialty wallcovering, Reed offers a refined palette of subtle colors for sophisticated spaces.

My goal when designing this dining set, was to embrace the act of gathering. The pandemic has proved nothing is more cherished. Therefore, the table was designed and crafted for side by side seating. The inspiration came from the beautiful pieces created during the mid-century modern era. Clean sleek lines, minimal ornamentation and elegance defined the furniture of this period. I incorporated hand carved splayed legs, exposed seamless joinery, arched front aprons and an elegantly chamfered rounded top. The timber used for the set is quarter-sawn sapele mahogany. The quarter-sawn section of the log is the most sought after due to it’s stability and beautiful ribbon grain. Pegged mortise and tenon joinery was used throughout. This is a time consuming technique that requires absolute accuracy but is far superior to today’s mechanical fasteners. The piece was meticulously sanded and an old world technique was used to ebonized the timber. This technique transformed it to a dark ebony tone but preserved it’s grain and character. Several coats of an oil/ vanish mix further enhanced the beauty of the grain and protects for daily use.
The table measures 9’7”L X 44.5”W X 30”H and the matching benches are 98”L X 15.5”W X 18”H -$8500

Normally tenons are hidden in mortises, but when the tenon passes entirely through the piece it is joining, it is called a through tenon.
Through tenons are more time-consuming to cut, and are one of the characteristics of Arts & Crafts and Mission style furniture.
We like to think of through tenons as "visible joinery" and a demonstration of the craftsperson's skill.
