In Burlington’s charming New North End, we recently transformed a tired, 1980s-era laminate kitchen into a warm, inviting space featuring custom craftsmanship and modern functionality. The main house and pool house are all about the river views- from the windows expanding floor to ceiling and updated open floor plan, the project team capitalized on bringing a whole new light to this incredible property. Paying homage to the beautiful coastal town of Nantucket, our goal was to bring the love for the island’s classic aesthetic to our clients primary South Shore, MA residence. It wasn’t long after our clients took ownership of the Gulf River property, did they want to change the dated interiors, divided floor plan and tired exterior elements at the main house and pool house. Architect, Hoadley Martinez and interior designer, Christine McGinty were charged with opening the space up to represent a coastal love all while bringing functionality to an active family lifestyle. Our project timeline was nothing short of unique. The homeowners had twenty-three family members arriving on the 23rd of December to enjoy the holiday week. This is an annual traditional for the family so how could we let them down! Our shovel broke ground the first week of September, giving our team sixteen weeks to renovate multiple interior and exterior areas of a 5,500 square foot home. Multiple crews were strategically scheduled daily, keeping areas dedicated to the appropriate process all while keeping the project moving forward efficiently. The existing cabinetry, appliances, moldings and flooring were removed and donated to a local charity. At the main house, working alongside Roomscapes Cabinetry & Design, we extended the existing footprint to include a 12 x 10 mudroom, raised the ceiling in the kitchen to incorporate a coffered ceiling, opened the existing walls up to incorporate a new pantry and sitting room. All mechanical infrastructure, plumbing, HVAC and electrical were updated. The floors throughout were replaced with an 8” Carlisle Wide Plank White Oak. The exteriors shell was stripped down to the sheathing. We increased the size of multiple window openings to capitalize on the stunning coastal views. We used an Alaskan Yellow cedar shingles on both the roof and sidewall as the material properties weather to a beautiful silvery grey. The exterior trim profiles and scale was increased to bring more definition to the architectural elements. The finishing touch were custom copper gutters to add a little extra sparkle! All these hurdles made the project team grow closer and committed to making this magic holiday gathering happen. You could say it was a Christmas miracle!

The challenge on this project was incorporating all the desired elements and products in a tight spatial constraint of 9’ x 7.5’. The clients biggest concern in the old bathroom was inadequate storage, tired and under-utilized bathtub and they also needed an additional sink for their two daughters who often share this space. Renovisions recommended removing the wall between the shower and closet to gain additional floor space as you enter the bath, while providing wall space for the three towel bars. Collaborating with the clients and searching to find the right fixtures paid off nicely. This newly remodeled Renovision accommodated two rectangular sinks, a walk-in shower with hand-held shower, wall-mounted shower head and two soft spray body jets. The oil-rubbed bronze fixtures not only provided a luxurious spa experience, but also added warmth and softness to the vintage feel. The glass shower enclosure is trimmed in a matte black grid that boasts an industrial aesthetic with retro feel while delivering modernistic function. It’s unique in appearance while allowing the chic white subway and black and white diamond tile to peek through. The beautifully designed cabinetry in a matte black painted finish provides plenty of storage. This smart configuration included two banks of three drawers for toiletries and accessories, two towers with adjustable shelves for towels and two ‘garage’ doors for hair dryers. Another unique design detail to capture attention was the black and white curvy geometric floor tile which plays off the straight lines of the cabinets and square grids of the shower enclosure. The clients are thrilled with the results and their modern, high-contrast styled digs – a true customized relaxation sanctuary for the entire family.

A fresh start created a connected space that makes sense in this Arlington (Shirlington), VA condo. The old kitchen was tired and outdated and felt cut off from the rest of the living area. The homeowner's collection of glassware and art was lost in the busyness. The result is a bright kitchen that cohesively brings the living space together and highlights the homeowner’s collected art and glassware.

This traditional 4,000 square-foot home is located on a quiet cul de sac in Alamo, California. It served as a family home for San Francisco city professionals, but it was due for a remodel following a change in the lives of the owners. The homeowners are now empty nesters and came to Yoko Oda Interior Design to update their home. Our aim was to create a sophisticated timeless modern environment for this large estate in the San Francisco Bay Area. We were excited to take on the challenge and give the home a new lease of life now their children have grown up and left home. Our sophisticated clients were drawn to traditional architectural details, global influences (i.e., Yoko’s Japanese modern aesthetics), contemporary clean lines, and neutral sophisticated color palettes. We have incorporated these interior design elements throughout the home, helping to maximize the space and features available to them while creating a more adult-friendly space to live. Neutral colors allow our clients to continue adding to the home in the future without committing to any colors that they may get tired of after some time. They are a classy option to add to any space and act as the backdrop for any artwork or home accessories that may be added later on.
