"They're both doctors and very much attuned to detail," she says. "Their primary goal was to create a space where they could lounge while the children played as well as an area to entertain family and friends while cooking and dining outside." Like a growing number of people wanting small outdoor kitchens in Houston, this client expressed interest in using concrete as a surface material: "The look is contemporary and is easily paired with any type of outdoor furniture," says Maxey, "from wicker to teak to iron." "This client chose a pergola over a roof extension off the house because they wanted it to still seem light and airy in their outdoor space for their young children," explains Lisha. "They wanted a certain degree of sun and shade protection, which a pergola does provide, but they wanted it to seem a bit like a park for the kids to play in." "The seating/storage bin was not a part of the original design," says Lisha. "As the project progressed, the client expressed interest in some sort of chest for the new outdoor furniture cushions to be stored in." The design for the storage bin was developed to accommodate this request: "It eventually evolved into a seating area as well. And to keep the look consistent with the new kitchen, it was agreed that the stone be carried through the design. The wood top was necessary so we could design a hinged access for storage."

Kaleidosculpture is the idea of a kaleidoscope executed in 3 dimensions. Instead of a geometry created by mirrors in 2 dimensions, we present a geometry of replication in 3 dimensions; and just as the movement of a kaleidoscope’s mirrors create infinite variations of shape and color, Kaleidosculpture shows the infinite possibilities of rotating a variety of brightly colored shapes through space. The originality of this concept is even further emphasized by the unique juxtaposition of materials: steel and ceramics, unusual partners in art. This courtyard installation was to be viewed both from the inside of the house and from the pool and hot tub. It evoked its beach city location in the sail-like shapes of the ceramic tiles. By locating it in a corner, we were able to use the movement of the sun to create a secondary art form composed of shadow that tracked the original across the walls. At night, it was dramatically illuminated from below to throw other striking shadows. To progress from one side of the courtyard, through its center, to the other side was to begin with a sparse sprinkling of color, move into a rich and dazzling display of colors and forms, and then to arrive at a mirror image of the starting point. In that focused space, creating dynamic lighting environments was central to several elements of the design, and Ketra’s color temperature settings enabled us to be extremely flexible while still providing high quality light in all circumstances. Using a large track system consisting of 30 S30 lamps, each individually addressed, we were able to create the ideal lighting settings for each mount. Additionally, we designed the system so that it can be set to match the unique warm standard Edison-style bulbs in the main chandelier, it can be set to a “Natural” mode that replicates the outdoor conditions throughout the day, or it can simulate the exact color temperature progression of that unforgettable Serengeti sunset. Control of the lighting environment and a smooth transition to the lighting systems in the rest of the home was also a priority. As a result, we installed 3 Lutron motorized shades in the space to account for ambient light, and 6 A20 lamps in an adjacent bar area to create a natural transition to the rest of the lighting system. This ensures that all of the lighting transitions, whether from the rest of the home to the trophy room or the trophy room to the outside, are continuous and smooth. The end result is an impressive and flexible display space with an added “wow factor” that is out of this hemisphere!
