The bathroom had good bones but was lacking light, had a weird industrial metal insert in the wall, and had a one-piece stainless-steel shower insert that was dangerously slippery. In the bathroom, we replaced the mirror with a unique hexagon shape that echoes the gradient hexagon encaustic tile in the shower. A new penny round shower floor was installed for extra traction and frameless glass shower door was added to keep the bathroom bright and open. An accent of stainless-steel corner shelves in the shower add function without distracting from the great pattern. Giving new life to the existing distressed vanity cabinet, the new Cambria Quartz countertop matches the kitchen countertops. This loft now matches the artistic vibes of the building, the personality of the homeowner, and imparts the quality this homeowner deserves so she can enjoy it for many years to come.

A very important factor in the design of this bath was to allow the client to stay in her home as long as possible. The vanity was designed to allow the client to sit at the sink and still have everything she needed at the her fingertips. When she finally needed to move about with the wheel chair, the bench could be removed and the sink would still be accessible to her. Aesthetic Value: The modern industrial angles of the metal balustrade and faceted wood treads create a juxtaposition with the living wall featured prominently in the stair well. The natural textures of the wall bring a warm feel to the assent of the stairway. Stair Safety: The stair adhered to the 2015 IBC codes for commercial stairway. With 36" grab rails and 42" guardrail. With all open spacing being well within code boundaries. Quality: The wood used was stranded bamboo selected for color uniformity. Each tread having precision milled metal traction bars inlaid in the leading edge. Strict adherence to control sample was maintained in final finishing. Technical Challenge: The most challenging part of the construction was creating the multifaceted wood covers for the steel substructure. All wood pieces had to be assembled so no nail holes or plugs would be showing.

The Stairwell This vertical city house boasts an open staircase from the lower level to the third floor. The client and architect collaborated on this custom-designed stair engineered and built by Lake Shore Stair Company. The spindle spacing and grouping into threes reflect the exterior architecture of the three vertically oriented window recesses. With clean railings and minimal detail on the spindles, this stair includes an unusual design element of customized treads that are laser cut for traction on each stair–a brilliant solution for replacing the more expected carpet runner.
