Inspiration for a transitional home design remodel in Boston

This gorgeous contemporary glass front custom wine cellar in Corona Del Mar, Newport Beach, California is an eye catcher. The sleek, glass ultra modern wine room was a unique and exciting project for our team here at Vintage Cellars. The stone bar extends into the wine cellar itself, but due to mechanical, cooling, and condensation concerns, our expert custom wine cellar team knew that extra measures needed to be taken to ensure the end quality remained top notch. The bar itself was divided into two sections, one cut section outside to make up the main seating area and the other inside the glass wine room. The stone bar, which is porous, takes up a good portion of the front facing glass panel. Had the bar simply extended into the wine cellar and been sealed off at the joints, the stone would have eventually transferred in enough heat and moisture to cause condensation. Proper wine cellar design and planning enabled this wine cellar to not only look fantastic, but function perfectly as well. One interesting unique feature in this Corona Del Mar, Newport Beach, Orange County, California glass and metal wine cellar is an extension of floor to ceiling frames mounted to the backside of the stone bar. This feature was made to seamlessly show consistency in floor to ceiling vintageview frames throughout. RESIDENCE FOR Mr PRADEEP JAIN Location: Sector 28, Chandigarh Year of Construction : 2005 So the old sewage connection was retained..........basically to save oneself from harassment from the sharks in the various departments connected with house sanction, and concomitant procedures. The plot was a large one – upwards of around 1500 sq yds. - which could qualify locally as a 3 kanal house. (1 kanal = 1/8 of an acre = 4840/8=605 sq yds.) We’ll not get into the travails of getting the plot transferred to oneself, and the subsequent sanction of the building plans – but it was relatively easy compared to the norm – thanx to a dynamic young AEO in the Estate Office. Since the Owner was based in Ambala, the plans for the house were relatively simple – considering that the construction firm was based out of Meerut........!!! So the program was for the house to be born out of 9 squares of around 16’ side each, (the traditional Vastu Purusha Mandala) with an additional 8’ wide wrap around space where needed – ie the SE, the SW and the NW sides. While the SW side had an insulating wrap of walk-in closets and toilets, the SE and the NW sides had a verandah – with suitable pop-outs of study-rooms, etc. to shade the glazing from the low East and West sun. The central square was designed like an atrium, with an attic above, just under the peak of the pyramidal roof topping the house. To allow for an unique character – this pyramid was clad in terracotta tiles. As the sketch of the plan shows – there is a square each for the entrance lobby, the living room, and the kitchen. The lobby has a powder room attached on the left, behind which is the kitchen. On the right, and opening onto a huge garden at the rear (NW) is the large living room – occupying 1.5 squares of space. And there is a 8’ wide verandah insulating this living room from the rear garden. Although packed with flowers from the Potted Plant Committee........... The central Atrium is the Dining room – with suitable storage all around for crockery and other decorative memorabilia.......and leading onto another family seating (the TV area) between the 3 bedrooms adjoining this atrium. The staircase to the FF is just SW of this lounge, with a hobby room or tool room (the owner is an engineer who loves to tinker) as is the exit to the SW garden. As aforesaid – the SW side of the house is insulated from the afternoon sun with a set of toilets and walk-in closets. On both floors. From the FF one can look down and communicate with the GF easily, leading to a great feeling of space. The FF also has additional rooms used as a gym, and games room, while a large deck is left open as a verandah of the NE side. If a 70’ long x 17’ wide space plus more seems reasonable. - instead of large. Well, there you are – supposed to be impressed with all those large spaces – which is what the house was supposed to do to the visitor in the first place.......!!!!

A small backyard pond is a great way to turn a drab backyard into a relaxing oasis. As you can see from this small backyard pond project installed in Lancater, PA. This backyard pond project included installation of a Aquascape Ecosystem 8’x11′ Pond. The pond installation included low voltage underwater lighting and automatic dosing system. Automatic dosing systems help to maintain optimum water quality in your pond. Existing landscaping were the pond was to be installed was transplanted and reinstalled after pond construction was complete. The secret behind building a low maintenance water feature is to develop a working ecosystem in your pond. A mechanical skimmer filter on the left of this diagram holds your pump and skims the surface of debris. The pump then transfers the water through a flexible PVC pipe to the biological biofalls on the right. With the help of beneficial bacteria the biofalls will clean the water and return it to the pond via the waterfall. The plants and fish work together to control excessive algae blooms. The gravel unlike a smooth pond liner provide surface area for beneficial bacteria to break down organic waste on the pond floor.

The original master bath suite in this rustic lake house possessed high ceilings with multiple rooms and all surfaces covered in Knotty Pine. Although there were multiple windows in this space, the wood walls, floor and ceiling tended to absorb natural light and force the illumination to come from incandescent Amber fixtures. Our approach was to start with a blank slate by removing all existing partitions and doors. A metal and milk glass wall with a functioning transom and integrated door, was designed and fabricated to divide the space and provide privacy, while allowing light to transfer from the shower, water-closet, bath and dressing room. The welded steel frames his and hers vanities have inlaid white glass panels with integrated steel framed mirrors above.

A 200 SF addition to an existing master bedroom, this master bath and closet has created a much needed spa-like retreat to an already beautiful home. The ceramic tile floor resembles a lighter hardwood to match the rest of the home, but offers the resiliency of tile for the wet conditions of the bathroom. A double floating vanity offers plenty of storage, and four skylights and a large window offer enough natural light that artificial lighting is rarely used during the day. The shower ceramic tile resembles marble, but allows for an easier hard surface to clean and maintain. The brass fixtures allow for a warm contrast to the cool grays, and are a great alternative to the typical stainless steel or brushed aluminum look. The brass also compliments the tile floor, as does the light grey vanity color and the brass color accents in the shower tile and vanity backsplash. A small passage just before the entrance to the bathroom allows for storage space in the form of two built-in white cabinets on either side. A sliding pocket door with privacy glass provides privacy while transferring natural light from one space to the next. The overall feel is inviting and peaceful, with a natural charm brought about by the materials and colors chosen to complete this spa-like retreat.

An existing wine cellar in a La Jolla, San Diego home was expanded to accommodate the growing collection of the owner. We worked on this project twice. The first installation was completed in 2008. After about 5 years, the client requested us to double the capacity of their wine room, but maintain the contemporary design. We added new sections to the existing racking to provide additional space for more wines. Stunning Wine Cellar for a Contemporary Home We completed a wine cellar installation project in La Jolla, an affluent city of San Diego, California, where we had to match the contemporary design of the home. The beautiful residential space was originally built with glass and wood. All the woodworking was constructed from Sapele Mahogany, which is common in many parts of the house. The cabinetry and furniture had to be the same tone and material. We have worked on this project twice. The first time was in 2008 and the second one was in 2013. We needed to expand and double the size of the custom wine cellar. A very integral part of this homeowner’s life is their wine and the collecting of wine. Our main goal was to create a racking design that consists of various orientations to allow the owner to store different sizes of bottles. Racking Features of the La Jolla Custom Wine Cellar The original room was constructed when the home was built. The architect, designing team, and contractor gave us a palette to match the existing cabinetry. The owners didn’t know what their needs were going to be. When they buy cases of wine, for example, they just put some of the bottles in the diamond bins and some in individual bottle spaces. In 2013, we tried to make the racking as universal as possible. The original capacity of the wine room was 1,100 bottles. It increased to 1,624 after the expansion of the space and adding more wine racks. Elevation 1 The first area of the room consists of racking for individual storage at the top section, with a VC-style cover for concealing the evaporator. There are diamond bins in the middle that can store nine bottles in each opening. We added many slots for large format bottles below the diamond bins because the owners stored bigger bottles in the first room, as big as 9 liters. What we did was to open up a couple of spaces to create a wider wine storage area. The whole racking in this area has a solid end panel. We took out the vertical supports and put the beam supports across to bear the load. We incorporated a coved tray feature to allow the owners to get a feel for the beautiful bottles in their collection. The large format bottles are stored in various heights, resulting in a cascading wine display. This style of racking allows for easy visibility of the wine labels. We installed LED lighting above this area to illuminate the space dramatically without emitting too much heat. Elevation 2 The next racking is labeled Elevation 2, which is the left wall that you will pass by before you go into the other storage area. It consists of horizontal display racks that can store both standard and larger bottles. These display racks, which are 8 ¼” deep, were installed with lighting and mirror at the back. The middle section has two glass shelves that provide an area for the client’s wine cellar accessories and mini car collection. Elevation 3 On the 3rd Elevation, the top racking includes slots with twelve coved trays and six solid backs. We added new individual column wine racks, and custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports to the existing cabinetry. Now, the total capacity of the individual bottle racking is 384, and the custom cabinets can accommodate 34 bottles. There is a double deep Sapele Mahogany tabletop where we installed very large steel supports under it. This will provide structural stability for bearing the weight of this big case storage area. The homeowner buys a lot of wine, so he wanted to have an area where he could stack all the boxes. He didn’t want the boxes to occupy the area at the front. With this feature, he could just bring the wines directly to this storage area, without affecting the aesthetic appeal of the front entrance of his La Jolla custom wine cellar. Elevations 4 and 5 The next wall is Elevation 4, which consists of wine racks for 98 magnum bottles. The top most section has a VC-style evaporator cover. Elevation 5 (in front of elevation 3), had twelve coved trays, 16-bottle custom cabinets with scalloped neck supports, and one hundred eighty individual storage slots. After adding new sections, we ended up having sixteen coved trays, 26-bottle custom cabinets, and 288 individual bottle racking. Rolling Ladder for Easy Access of Wines Another factor that we consider when designing a wine room is the convenience in accessing the bottles. Since the ceiling of this La Jolla custom wine cellar was tall (about 124” height), we added a hook rolling ladder. A hook ladder has fixtures that allow it to slide along the rail and can be lifted off the rail if you want to transfer it to another section of the racking on a different wall.
