When a client tells us they’re a mid-century collector and long for a kitchen design unlike any other we are only too happy to oblige. This kitchen is saturated in mid-century charm and its custom features make it difficult to pin-point our favorite aspect! Cabinetry We had the pleasure of partnering with one of our favorite Denver cabinet shops to make our walnut dreams come true! We were able to include a multitude of custom features in this kitchen including frosted glass doors in the island, open cubbies, a hidden cutting board, and great interior cabinet storage. But what really catapults these kitchen cabinets to the next level is the eye-popping angled wall cabinets with sliding doors, a true throwback to the magic of the mid-century kitchen. Streamline brushed brass cabinetry pulls provided the perfect lux accent against the handsome walnut finish of the slab cabinetry doors. Tile Amidst all the warm clean lines of this mid-century kitchen we wanted to add a splash of color and pattern, and a funky backsplash tile did the trick! We utilized a handmade yellow picket tile with a high variation to give us a bit of depth; and incorporated randomly placed white accent tiles for added interest and to compliment the white sliding doors of the angled cabinets, helping to bring all the materials together. Counter We utilized a quartz along the counter tops that merged lighter tones with the warm tones of the cabinetry. The custom integrated drain board (in a starburst pattern of course) means they won’t have to clutter their island with a large drying rack. As an added bonus, the cooktop is recessed into the counter, to create an installation flush with the counter surface. Stair Rail Not wanting to miss an opportunity to add a touch of geometric fun to this home, we designed a custom steel handrail. The zig-zag design plays well with the angles of the picket tiles and the black finish ties in beautifully with the black metal accents in the kitchen. Lighting We removed the original florescent light box from this kitchen and replaced it with clean recessed lights with accents of recessed undercabinet lighting and a terrifically vintage fixture over the island that pulls together the black and brushed brass metal finishes throughout the space. This kitchen has transformed into a strikingly unique space creating the perfect home for our client’s mid-century treasures.

Perfectly embedded on an acre of land overlooking a pond, in the heart of Willow Bend of Plano, this dated, traditional home got more than a complete facelift. The wife is a “farmer’s daughter” and could have never imagined having a home like this to call her own one day. Finding a 15’ dining table was a tall task… especially for a family of four. Using a local craftsman, the most gorgeous white oak table was created to host everyone in the neighborhood! The clients told a lot of stories about their past and children. The designer realized that the stories were actually treasures as she incorporated their memories and symbols in every room. She brought these memories to life in a custom artwork collage above the family room mantel. From a tractor representing the grandfather, to the Russian alphabet portraying the roots of their adopted sons and some Cambodian script, there were meanings behind each piece. In order to bring nature indoors, the designer decided to demo the exterior wall to the patio to add a large folding door and blew out the wall dividing the formal dining room and breakfast room so there would be a clear sight through to the outdoors. Throughout the home, each family member was thought of. The fabrics and finishes had to withstand small boys, who were extremely active. The use of outdoor fabrics and beautiful scratch proof finishes were incorporated in every space – bring on the hotwheels.

Rooms filled with light, fine art and antique furniture were the backdrops for our "Kentfield Collected" project. This was an overall home refresh and our team loved the challenge of bringing new life to the exquisite existing collection of art and antiques. We started with thoughtful space planning to achieve an overall outcome that is more pleasing for the clients' enjoyment of the home when each room feels more balanced. The refreshing of exciting items and the selection of a few new pieces brought a touch of light, beauty and pop of unexpected that paired beautifully with the treasured finds of the homeowners. In the powder bath, the poppy wall covering, navy vanity and silvery metallic ceiling paint is one of the pops of unexpected delight you will find in the home. Our team designed beautiful linen draperies in a creamy gold-tone that perfectly framed the amazing view from the dining room windows. The buffet in a dark navy with a faux Belgian linen finish and a pair of crystal lamps were the right balance to complement the wall art in the room. The addition of a game table to the living room framed by a mirror and scones is an ideal spot for a game of cards or stunning flowers. The reupholstered chaise took on a hip and vibrant vibe in a lush green velvet fabric and placed in a perfectly edited guest suite. Custom outdoor cushions and pillows create a spot to enjoy the deck and views at the end of the day. Let us also not forget Buster (our project mascot) welcoming guests to this fine-tuned Kentfield beauty. Arlene Ladegaard, owner of Design Connection, Inc. was chosen among many candidates for the redesign and furnishing of this beautiful home. The living room was the first to be addressed along with the entryway and dining room. The clients loved their existing sofa from their old home. It was Italian in styling and sat very low to the ground. The new furnishings had to complement this one item in scale and color. The new furniture was chosen with scale and comfort in mind. The large wall behind the sofa included a new custom cabinet cantilevered off the floor. Zebrawood was used for this contemporary custom cabinet and a natural floor stain to complement the furnishings. The existing artwork was brought over from their previous home and the oranges, blues and grays were taken from the colors in the paintings. A steel gray color for the walls was a perfect choice to complement the furniture, warm leather tones and the geometric wool area rugs. The clients are thrilled with their new space and love the accents by the fireplace, which display their own treasured accessories. Design Connection, Inc. provided: space plans, furniture, area rugs, paint colors, stain colors, custom cabinet and project management.

Part of an extensive home remodel, this kitchen design was born of one man’s love of all things Harley Davidson. Color inspiration came from the client’s own cherished bike which was a stunning combination of matte black and brushed steel. The client’s wish was to have a large open area in which he could “be one with his guests” when hosting large gatherings. Cabinets, hardware and appliances all in black allow the focus to be on the beauty of the larger architectural elements as a whole. Included along the main storage wall is a hidden 42” refrigerator, dual pull-out pantries, and extra wide drawers below a pair of upper cabinets with matte black glass fold-up doors that open & close automatically via servo-drive technology. The new island - which measures just shy of 16 ½ feet! - is a true central point around which all action revolves. Wide walkways on either side provide ease of flow for multiple sous chefs and guests alike. A textured cypress soffit above the island was designed to house the modern hood and also create a feeling of unity as it is the same size as the island below. Textured cypress wood also wraps matte black cabinetry and lines the main wall, changing grain direction to provide visual interest. The 5’ Galley Workstation is a multi-functional marvel, easily transitioning from prep station to serving surface to clean-up with the addition of its built-in accessories. Placing an undercounter wine refrigerator on the back side of the island makes it easy for guests at the bar to help themselves. Close to the bar seating area, a 42” flat screen tv fits perfectly flush in the wall, practically disappearing when not in use. Unique details include a large display cabinet with a metal framed front & side crafted out of steel by a local artisan. The glass is 2-way mirror so when the interior light is off, the treasure is concealed inside. The interior is painted in the trademark Harley orange. Above a modern dining table, a one-of-a-kind chandelier was created from 3 bike helmets, painted in Harley orange by a local automobile detail shop. The interiors are finished in metallic silver for extra glow. Adjacent to the Kitchen, and initially deceiving in its simplicity, the main tv wall was quite complex and challenging to realize. It has a convex curve from left to right and slopes back from floor to ceiling. The interior hollow space created room for a shallow tv niche on top and partially recessed deep media storage cabinets below. The planning and framing involved to create the proper compound miter connections required extra diligence from the designers and builder, but the finished product was worth the effort!
