This project was a commissioned, custom design and build of a walnut and steel kitchen table for a client in Fairway Kansas in the Kansas City area. Table dimensions are 75" Long x 43" Wide x 30"H (walnut top is 1 1/2" Thick). This custom commissioned 1 1/2" thick walnut table was years in the making. This is a little misleading, as it really only took around eight weeks to fabricate the walnut table top and black painted steel base. However, the six 1 1/2" planks of walnut wood were reclaimed from two different storage areas that had been aging the wood for twenty-five and thirty-five years respectively. This aging allows for the chocolate color of the wood to really emerge. The custom designed and fabricated steel base is painted a flat black to match chairs and other accents.

What a dramatic transformation for this twenty-five-year-old house in the Western Hills neighborhood of Yorktown. Out with the pink of the 90’s and in with sharp navy blues, white, and wood tones.
We designed and remodeled the kitchen, a bathroom, and the fireplace area of the adjacent living room. We changed the kitchen layout to make it more functional, added new lighting, replaced all the cabinetry, installed new Kitchen Aid appliances, installed new Cambria countertops and fireplace surround, installed new backsplash tile, and installed a new tile shower. Credit to One Call Renovations for enlarging the doorway from the kitchen to the living room with an arched opening and the drywall work.

The option to downsize was not an option for the empty nesters who have lived in this home for over twenty-five years. Situated in TMR, the sprawling home has been the venue for many social events, dinner parties and family celebrations. With grown children living abroad, and grand children on the way, it was important that the new kitchen be highly functional and conducive to hosting informal, yet large family gatherings.
The kitchen had been relocated to the garage in the late eighties during a large renovation and was looking tired. Eight foot concrete ceilings meant the new materials and design had to create the illusion of height and light. White lacquered doors and integrated fridge panels extend to the ceiling and cast a bright reflection into the room. The teak dining table and chairs were the only elements to preserve from the old kitchen, and influenced the direction of materials to be incorporated into the new design. The island and selected lower cabinetry are made of butternut and oiled in a matte finish that relates to the teak dining set. Oversized tiles on the heated floors resemble soft concrete.
The mandate for the second floor included the overhaul of the master ensuite, to create his and hers closets, and a library. Walls were relocated and the floor plan reconfigured to create a luxurious ensuite of dramatic proportions. A walk-in shower, partitioned toilet area, and 18’ vanity are among many details that add visual interest and comfort.
Minimal white oak panels wrap around from the bedroom into the ensuite, and integrate two full-height pocket doors in the same material.

This was one of the most technically demanding projects I’ve ever undertaken. We constructed a full basement and home theater beneath an existing two story structure, a process that required precision at every stage. Using a limited access drill rig, we drilled twenty 24 inch diameter, 18 foot deep shafts around the perimeter of the home, then craned in steel I beams, setting and cementing each one in place.
Once the concrete cured around these vertical steel columns, we attached the existing structure to the I beams using a combination of red iron and structural steel, effectively suspending the entire two story home in mid air while excavation and construction took place below.
After excavation, we moved into waterproofing, steel reinforcement, and shotcrete, forming basement walls that now serve as the home’s new foundation. When the structure was secured to the new foundation, the upper ends of the I beams were torched off below grade.
All of this was accomplished with an in ground swimming pool just five feet away — a true testament to careful planning, engineering, and execution.

This week, as paint restoration specialists from the Chicago area, we undertook work on a historical, 1858, Greek Revival and Federalist brick house built for Gustavus Palmer, a successful farmer and early settler in McHenry county. The house sits on its original corner lot in Crystal Lake, Illinois and still looks quite impressive. In 1985, the house was added to the National Register of Historical Places and the Park District is now responsible for the preservation of this special piece of McHenry county history.
Because of its design, the house has no gutters. The water drains over the large crown and dental moldings, and causes the paint to fail in a major way, thereby compromising the integrity of the original wood components of the building. As shown in the first picture, on the West side of the house, once the scraping process started, one hundred fifty five years of paint came off a twenty foot section of the crown. To preserve the wood, we used a product designed to restore wooden boats. The product is a Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) known as “ The Rot Doctor ”. It seals the wood fibers and creates an ideal surface for paint to adhere to.
