Located in the beautiful Rice University area of Houston, HOUSE 2344 is the 3rd project designed for this repeat client. This design is truly a collaboration between designer and owner; infused with elements acquired from living overseas in Asia and Europe combined with materials and qualities from 2 previous home designs the project is a reflection of their unique personalities. A series of inwardly sloping butterfly type roofs are organized along a central spine above the circulation zone of the house. Main common areas and bedrooms key into this axis and are telegraphed up to the roof planes above. The 2-story structure flips the common arrangement of spaces locating the living / dining / kitchen on the 2nd floor with a soaring dynamic ceiling scape in order to have the bedrooms on the more serene and restful ground level. The mass of the house is intentionally pushed away from the street side of the lot allowing the pool and yard area to act as a buffer for the interior and to guarantee the exterior will always be open and sunny without any adjacent buildings. The Owner cultivates an extensive herb, vegetable, and fruit garden along with fresh egg-laying chickens to use in eclectic home cooked meals. Typical manicure lawns and feature trees are avoided in favor of natural wild flower landscaping that changes with the seasons.

Joe used the shop for full frame-up restorations that involved engine work, body work, painting, etc. – your typical hard-core home based restoration shop. The shop was a 24' x 32' building with a cathedral ceiling and was carved up into two car bays (one with a lift), and a bay for the workshop area. The office was located in a spare room in the house, only big enough for one person to work in at a time. Typical of 15 year old shops, it had a collection of everything in every corner – "your basic junk shop." Joe knew he needed a shop and home office to better meet his needs and to be a reflection of his business philosophies. His goals were simple: 1. Upgrade the workshop to the 21st century and make it more efficient for the space he had and the type of work he likes to do in there 2. Add a new office to run the business out of 3. Make it an enjoyable place to hang out to swill a few beers and smoke a few good cigars! Mission accomplished. Joe added a 12' x 22' office addition and remodeled the existing garage/workshop area. (Trying to simultaneously work on restorations – a '71 Corvette and a Raven – as well as doing engine work on his Wild Child drag car was a challenge, to say the least.) Inspiration for a mid-sized contemporary l-shaped eat-in kitchen remodel in Denver with flat-panel cabinets, dark wood cabinets, blue backsplash, stone slab backsplash, stainless steel appliances and an island

The kitchen in this 1950’s home needed a complete overhaul. It was dark, outdated and inefficient. The homeowners wanted to give the space a modern feel without losing the 50’s vibe that is consistent throughout the rest of the home. The homeowner’s needs included: - Working within a fixed space, though reconfiguring or moving walls was okay - Incorporating work space for two chefs - Creating a mudroom - Maintaining the existing laundry chute - A concealed trash receptacle The new kitchen makes use of every inch of space. To maximize counter and cabinet space, we closed in a second exit door and removed a wall between the kitchen and family room. This allowed us to create two L shaped workspaces and an eat-in bar space. A new mudroom entrance was gained by capturing space from an existing closet next to the main exit door. The industrial lighting fixtures and wrought iron hardware bring a modern touch to this retro space. Inset doors on cabinets and beadboard details replicate details found throughout the rest of this 50’s era house.

This project represents an increasingly popular type of project - combining 2 bedrooms into a single master suite. The house is a 1910 craftsman, with 4 bedrooms on the second floor. Typical of older homes, the master bedroom had a very small bathroom, and very little closet space. The owners decided to sacrifice an adjacent guest bedroom to create a spacious master suite. The new rooms include a large bathroom, with hers and his vanities, separate toilet room, custom tile shower and soaking tub. The extra space also allowed us to install a luxurious custom walk-in closet. Design Criteria: - Increase size and utility of closet space. - Create a large, luxury bathroom with distinctly separate hers/his spaces.
