When Joe Germann founded Motorhead Extraordinaire in 2005, his shop was your typical motorhead shop – lots of hand-me-downs, "way too many" piles of junk, and always too much work going on. Joe used the shop for full frame-up restorations that involved engine work, body work, painting, etc. – your typical hard-core home based restoration shop.
The shop was a 24' x 32' building with a cathedral ceiling and was carved up into two car bays (one with a lift), and a bay for the workshop area. The office was located in a spare room in the house, only big enough for one person to work in at a time. Typical of 15 year old shops, it had a collection of everything in every corner – "your basic junk shop."
Joe knew he needed a shop and home office to better meet his needs and to be a reflection of his business philosophies. His goals were simple:
1. Upgrade the workshop to the 21st century and make it more efficient for the space he had and the type of work he likes to do in there
2. Add a new office to run the business out of
3. Make it an enjoyable place to hang out to swill a few beers and smoke a few good cigars!
Mission accomplished.
Joe added a 12' x 22' office addition and remodeled the existing garage/workshop area. (Trying to simultaneously work on restorations – a '71 Corvette and a Raven – as well as doing engine work on his Wild Child drag car was a challenge, to say the least.) Both the new shop and office are fully furnished with a host of Lista storage and workspace products.
“ The Lista workspaces are simply awesome and work out so well for us. ”
Joe raves, "The Lista workspaces are simply awesome and work out so well for us. The desks are at a 35-1/2" workbench height so they are comfortable to use either standing up or sitting down in a Lista work chair. My workspace uses a Nexus frame system with 16" overhead cabinets and a large double hinged door storage cabinet with roll-out trays, which we use to store product catalogs and other heavy stacks of literature. In my wife Isabelle's work area, we used 12' of standard overhead cabinets fastened directly to the wall and a large 12' long double workspace. She has two heavy-duty Lista file cabinets, and believe me they are loaded up and work flawlessly!"
Joe is a big fan of Lista products, which he sells through his business. "Well-thought-out is an understatement. Lista workspace solutions are among the most functional, highest quality, and best value available today. There is nothing as sturdy and long lasting as Lista workspace products."

While the house is new, it is in a 1920's in-town Houston neighborhood and has a vintage look and style about it... so we wanted the interiors to give a nod to and respect that history. (The houses that sat on these lots previous to the new builds were typical 1920's bungalows.) Though not seen from this angle, the entire 2nd floor is all open floorplan--and wrapped by a 4 ft high flat panel wainscoting. And we felt a simple, flat panel, Shaker style cabinet would be appropriate in that context. And since the price-point of the houses supported a higher end--full stainless--kitchen, we had custom stainless legs fabricated for the marble seating overhang in the island. And since the cabinetry is fully custom--built in place--we were able to stagger the heights and depths of the cabinets to create some visual interest. The ISLAND has a 12" deep bookcase type display section with glass door on this side--and a 4" deep spice rack section on the other end (not visible), near the 36" dual fuel gas range. As a further nod to the vintage modern style, we roughed in a wall-mount FAUCET with double jointed spout--above a custom, locally fabricated, zero radius stainless SINK (32" wide x 20" deep x 10" tall). For PULLS we chose a clean, simple, stainless bar pull (in various sizes based on type / size / width of door / drawer). The FLOORING on this entire level is red oak plank w/ ebony stain. COUNTERTOP material is classic Carrara marble--sealed twice with a penetrating sealer. The BACKSPLASH is a gray-green, hand glazed (with slight crackle), 3x8 laid in a brick (running bond) pattern.

Columbus Design-Build, Kitchen & Bath Remodeling, Historic Renovations

We recently took on an exciting whole-home renovation for this lovely historic Trinity in Center City Philadelphia. Originally built in the mid-1800s, the house footprint is just over 17’ x 13’. As is typical of this type of 3-story house, the kitchen is located in the basement, making this house four floors of occupied space with overall square footage totaling just under 900 square feet.
The homeowner felt the former kitchen was cramped, dimly lit, and inefficiently designed, and she was in search of help in bringing her artistic vision for the space to life, blending both old and new elements through an exciting mix of textures and character. High on her priority list was integrating her wonderful collection of objects gathered from her travels around the world.
We brought our design skills and construction experience to the team, working with the homeowner and the designer to develop a host of creative solutions, including the installation of an Indonesian screen as a sliding door covering a newly reconfigured utility area, which includes a new on-demand hot water heater, mounted next to a new electrical panel with ample room for service and access.
Other Noteworthy Features and Solutions:
New crisp drywall blended with original masonry wall textures and original exposed beams
Custom-glazed adler wood cabinets, beautiful fusion Quartzite and custom cherry counters, and a copper sink were selected for a wonderful interplay of colors, textures, and Old World feel
Small-space efficiencies designed for real-size humans, including built-ins wherever possible, limited free-standing furniture, and no upper cabinets
Built-in storage and appliances under the counter (refrigerator, freezer, washer, dryer, and microwave drawer)
Additional multi-function storage under stairs
Extensive lighting plan with multiple sources and types of light to make this partially below-grade space feel bright and cheery
Enlarged window well to bring much more light into the space
Insulation added to create sound buffer from the floor above

Large modern black two-story brick flat roof idea in Salt Lake City with a green roof

The entryway embraces the home's industrial character with an exposed brick feature wall, floating wood staircase, and a sculptural walnut bench that introduces warmth and craftsmanship. Minimal styling and layered natural textures create a welcoming first impression while allowing the architecture and material palette to take center stage. The result is an entry that feels both refined and effortlessly timeless.

We began by digging the footings for the deck and sunroom; however, we immediately ran into a problem. The back of the lot was built on fill dirt, which meant the structure would need extra support. Fortunately for the customer, with over 20 years of experience in the industry and having dealt with this type of problem before, we were able to contact our structural engineer who devised a plan to take care of the issue. Therefore, what would have been a large problem turned into a simple time delay with some additional cost requirements.
To fix the situation, we would up having to dig 12-foot-deep footings with an excavator before adding some additional helical piers for the deck posts and sunroom foundation (FYI – typical footing depth is two feet). Since the customer understood that this was an unexpected situation, we created a change order to cover the extra cost. Still, it’s important to note that the very nature of construction means that hidden situations may occur, so it’s always wise for customers to have contingency plans in place before work on the home begins.
In the end, we finished on time and within the homeowners budget, and they were thrilled with the quality of our work.

This project represents an increasingly popular type of project - combining 2 bedrooms into a single master suite. The house is a 1910 craftsman, with 4 bedrooms on the second floor. Typical of older homes, the master bedroom had a very small bathroom, and very little closet space. The owners decided to sacrifice an adjacent guest bedroom to create a spacious master suite. The new rooms include a large bathroom, with hers and his vanities, separate toilet room, custom tile shower and soaking tub. The extra space also allowed us to install a luxurious custom walk-in closet.
Design Criteria:
- Increase size and utility of closet space.
- Create a large, luxury bathroom with distinctly separate hers/his spaces.
Special Features:
- Custom tile shower, with frameless glass door
- Platform soaking tub w/ custom tile deck
- His/Hers vanities with quartz countertops.
- Separate toilet room.
- Room-sized walk-in closet with custom cabinet system.
- Custom 5-Panel doors and built-up mouldings to match the original woodwork.
