Understanding Reading - Photos & Ideas

Everyone needs a little space of their own. Whether it’s a cozy reading nook for a busy mom to curl up in at the end of a long day, a quiet corner of a living room for an artist to get inspired, or a mancave where die-hard sports fans can watch the game without distraction. Even Emmy-award winning “This Is Us” actor Sterling K. Brown was feeling like he needed a place where he could go to be productive (as well as get some peace and quiet). Sterling’s Los Angeles house is home to him, his wife, and two of their two sons – so understandably, it can feel a little crazy. Sterling reached out to interior designer Kyle Schuneman of Apt2B to help convert his garage into a man-cave / office into a space where he could conduct some of his day-to-day tasks, run his lines, or just relax after a long day. As Schuneman began to visualize Sterling’s “creative workspace”, he and the Apt2B team reached out Paintzen to make the process a little more colorful. The room was full of natural light, which meant we could go bolder with color. Schuneman selected a navy blue – one of the season’s most popular shades (especially for mancaves!) in a flat finish for the walls. The color was perfect for the space; it paired well with the concrete flooring, which was covered with a blue-and-white patterned area rug, and had plenty of personality. (Not to mention it makes a lovely backdrop for an Emmy, don’t you think?) Schuneman’s furniture selection was done with the paint color in mind. He chose a bright, bold sofa in a mustard color, and used lots of wood and metal accents throughout to elevate the space and help it feel more modern and sophisticated. A work table was added – where we imagine Sterling will spend time reading scripts and getting work done – and there is plenty of space on the walls and in glass-faced cabinets, of course, to display future Emmy’s in the years to come. However, the large mounted TV and ample seating in the room means this space can just as well be used hosting get-togethers with friends. We think you’ll agree that the final product was stunning. The rich navy walls paired with Schuneman’s decor selections resulted in a space that is smart, stylish, and masculine. Apt2B turned a standard garage into a sleek home office and Mancave for Sterling K. Brown, and our team at Paintzen was thrilled to be a part of the process.

Glamourous, Joyful Condo in Wayne, PA

Rudloff Custom Builders

This condominium is modern and sleek, while still retaining much of its traditional charm. We added paneling to the walls, archway, door frames, and around the fireplace for a special and unique look throughout the home. To create the entry with convenient built-in shoe storage and bench, we cut an alcove an existing to hallway. The deep-silled windows in the kitchen provided the perfect place for an eating area, which we outfitted with shelving for additional storage. Form, function, and design united in the beautiful black and white kitchen. It is a cook’s dream with ample storage and counter space. The bathrooms play with gray and white in different materials and textures to create timeless looks. The living room’s built-in shelves and reading nook in the bedroom add detail and storage to the home. The pops of color and eye-catching light fixtures make this condo joyful and fun. Girls Bedroom -Shutters in a Bay Window

Abda Custom Window Fashions

Love this girls' bedroom! I can image this girl curling up on the window seat and reading a book for hours. The lavender and pale yellow walls are a perfect color combination. The white bedding is light and airy, which gives a whimsical look to the bedroom. The flower rugs are a perfect addition to this room and is complete with the shutters on the bay windows. We hear from clients that shutters can be overwhelming and consequently are sometimes overlooked. With so many choices, we completely understand how our clients must feel prior to working with us. But shutters are an important addition to your home and can actually improve the overall look and make it easier to sell your home in the future. The important thing is finding a shutter that fits your purpose and will compliment your home. The shutters in this picture are a perfect match because the trim is low-profile which decreases the amount of space it takes up in the window seat area. In addition, a clean-line look was achieved by omitting the tilt bar that would normally be placed in the middle of the shutter vertically. This is important when the client wants to maximize the view-through space. With our shutters, this does not compromise the strength or durability. Our goal is to make the shutter process easy for our clients! Stop in our showroom or schedule a free in-home consultation. We work with clients in the Central Indiana Area. KATHERINE NOPPER, Bookkeeping and Human Resources Office Administrator

Lewis Creek Builders

Katherine grew up in southern Vermont, on the Connecticut River where her parents were sheep farmers. She has undergraduate degrees in Political Science and Spanish and holds a master’s degree in Liberal Studies. She was able to combine her love for the arts, literature and theory with a burgeoning interest in understanding residential design and the built environment while researching her master’s project. Katherine believes the way our environments are designed impact who we are, our local histories, and whether we are able to lead fulfilling lives. Her driving force is people; seeing how teamwork can build something from nothing, witnessing the pride people show for their work, as well as sharing in positive feedback and professional growth. Katherine spends her free time organizing furniture, beautifying spaces, reading novels, birdwatching, watching British/foreign spy and crime drama, and going to auctions. Her favorite destination is Home (southern Vermont) and she would love to visit Australia again. Her guilty pleasures are reading Harry Bosch detective novels, eating chewy candy or fruit snacks. A fun fact about Katherine: she cuts her own hair.
