Sewell Design was commissioned with the responsibility of undertaking the design of this residence for a young family who required a design that would cater for the living requirements of their family currently and for the future. Perched high on top of a hill within a rural setting, this two storey residence was designed to reflect the style of a modern country 'Queenslander' that was capable of encompassing all of the extensive rural landscape views on offer. Symmetrically balanced wall and window proportions, large articulated verandah areas and painted timber trims contribute to the style and detailing of the design. An octagonal 'rotunda' and 'turret' type roof extension of the verandah at the north east corner of the residence provides an outdoor entertaining area for the enjoyment of the extensive views on offer and provides direct sunlight access. A large family home consisting of 5 bedrooms each with walk in robe, guest bedroom with own ensuite, office, formal lounge, kitchen, dining and main living area, theatre room and rumpus room, this residence has all the space needed for the future needs of the occupants.

Despite the billion-dollar views, premium homes are scant atop the Palisades. When the designer set out to create the perfect Palisades aerie, complete with a private pool, it proved to be quiet the undertaking. This property is situated just behind the cliff's edge with fantastic views, but equally as many challenges. After nearly three years of arduous renovations and improvements, it's now a sophisticated retreat with modern, industrial finishes throughout. Without a doubt, the crowning achievement of this spectacular renovation is the 10 foot by 12 foot stainless steel pool and hot tub situated on the roof.

This project is the definition of where the finesse of craftsmanship and structural brute must meet and far exceed client expectations.
The massive undertaking of excavating 700 cubic yards of soil to add a new basement below the existing structure took this 2-story home to 4,000 square feet. This now 3-story Victorian boasts 1,800 additional square feet of useable space including a third living room with soundproof insulation and custom built-in cabinetry, a wet bar, full bathroom with Waterworks fixtures and intricate marble tile, private office, laundry room equipped with a chute from every floor, and a gym & guest room.
Restoring, the original upper 2 floors of this stunning Victorian to its former glory was another challenge in and of itself. Rehabbing vaulted coved ceilings & original early 19th century mantels, renovating the bedrooms and bathrooms, updating the kitchen and creating an indoor/outdoor experience by installing doors in the former window locations between the dining room and patio were just a few key elements of this project.

This project was all about resurfacing an existing deck, which provides a significant amount of benefits, including:
- Enhanced Aesthetics: A deck resurfacing project can transform the appearance of the deck, giving it a fresh and modern look that can significantly improve the curb appeal of the entire home.
- Cost Savings: Resurfacing is often more cost-effective than completely rebuilding a deck. It allows homeowners to achieve a like-new appearance without the expense of a full replacement.
- Increased Durability: New materials used in resurfacing are designed to be more resistant to wear, fading, and the elements, resulting in a longer lifespan for the deck.
- Improved Safety: Addressing structural issues during the resurfacing process ensures the deck's safety and stability, reducing the risk of accidents.
- Less Disruption: Compared to a full deck replacement, resurfacing typically involves less disruption to the homeowner's daily routine, as it's a faster and less invasive process.
- Customization: Homeowners can choose from a wide range of materials, colors, and finishes to match their design preferences and complement their home's style.
- Environmentally Friendly: Resurfacing reduces the amount of old material that needs to be disposed of, making it a more environmentally conscious option.
By undertaking a deck resurfacing project, homeowners can rejuvenate their outdoor space, enjoy a beautiful and functional deck for years to come and increase the overall value of their property.

The windows were sized and placed to allow for a bright interior, yet they also cultivate a sense of privacy and intimacy within the residence. Looking for more space to entertain guests, our homeowners asked us to help transform their longtime dream into reality. Their “must-haves” included a large gathering room for entertaining and hosting events, and a primary bedroom suite in which to relax. The bedroom suite with walk in closet and private bath was designed with both elegance and functionality in mind. A washer / dryer closet was enclosed in the bathroom to make laundry day a breeze. The kitchen received added sparkle with minor alterations. By widening the entrance from the original kitchen/breakfast room to the addition we created a new space that flowed seamlessly from the existing house, appearing original to the home. We visually connected the new and existing spaces with wide-plank flooring for a cohesive look. Their spacious yard was well-configured for an addition at the back of the home; however, landscape preparation required storm water management before undertaking construction. Outdoor living was enhanced with a two-level deck, accessible from both the primary suite and living room. A covered roof on the upper level created a cozy space to watch the game on tv, dine outside, or enjoy a summer storm, shielded from the rain. The uncovered lower deck level was designed for outdoor entertainment, well suited for a future firepit. Delighted with the realization of their vision, our homeowners have expanded their indoor/outdoor living space by 90%.

Overthinking a situation isn’t always a bad thing, particularly when the home in question is one in which the past is suddenly meeting the present. Originally designed by Finnish architect Olav Hammarstrom in 1952 for fellow architect Eero Saarinen, this unique home recently received its first transformation in decades. Still in its 1950s skin, it was completely gutted, inside and out. It was a serious undertaking, as the homeowner wanted modern upgrades, while keeping an eye toward retaining the home’s 1950s charm. She had a vision for her home, and she stuck to it from beginning to end.
Perched on a rise of land and overlooking the tranquil Wellfleet Herring Pond, the home initially appears split, with the guest house on the left, and the main house of the right, but both ends are connected with a breezeway. The original home’s bones were in good shape, but many upgrades and replacements were necessary to bring the house up to date.
New siding, roofing, gutters, insulation and mechanical systems were all replaced. Doors and windows with metal frames were custom made by a company in Long Island that fabricates doors for office buildings. Modern heating and cooling systems were added, and the three bathrooms were all updated. The footprint of the home remained unchanged. Inside, the only expansion was more closet space.
The attention to detail in retaining the 50s-style look took a lot of online searching, from handles and knobs to lighting fixtures, with bits and pieces arriving from all over the world, including a doorstop from New Zealand. The homeowner selected many of the fixtures herself, while a very detail-oriented foreman exhaustively researched as well, looking for just the right piece for each and every location.
High-end appliances were purchased to modernize the kitchen and all of the old cabinetry was removed, replaced and refaced with NUVACOR, a versatile surfacing material that not only provided a sleek, modern look, but added convenience and ease of use.
Bare, wood-beamed ceilings throughout give a nod to the home’s natural surroundings, while the main living area (formerly a fisherman’s cabin), with a brick fireplace, was completely trimmed in walnut, while multiple windows of varying sizes welcome sunlight to brighten the home. Here, the sheetrock ceiling with faux rafters provides an interesting and room-brightening feature.
Behind the house sits the serene pond, which can now be enjoyed from the stunning new deck. Here, decking material was not laid out side by side, as it typically is but, instead, meticulously laid out on edge, creating an unusual and eye-catching effect. A railing of tempered glass panels allows unobstructed views of the surrounding natural beauty, and keeps consistent with the open, airy feel of the place. A new outdoor shower is accessible via the deck and left open to the wilderness and the pond below, completing the bold yet sophisticated feeling of this retro-modern home.

This little kitchen wasn’t functioning at its best and quickly became the biggest undertaking of this remodel. The original brick wall had not fared well over the years, and was in need of some serious structural help, so rebuilding the back of the house became our first order of business, but this let us increase the size of the windows and flood the kitchen with all that gorgeous northern light. We reimagined the layout of the kitchen to bring in some much-needed functionality, and we were even able to tuck in a beverage center. Aesthetically, we wanted the kitchen to feel bright and open, even as we utilized every square inch of storage we could get, so we selected a crisp light blue for the walls, white cabinets, and white tile for the backsplash. But we were dead set against this kitchen becoming a space that didn’t drip with charm, so we brough it handmade star and cross tiles on the backsplash (with a little pop to the beverage area tile with a hand painted design), a marble look quartz counter top, and touches of black and brass for a little glitz. We also carried the wood flooring from the rest of the home into the kitchen and designed a custom steel and wood island to bring warmth into this space. The laundry room & pantry were also updated to include lovely built-in storage and tie in with the finishes in the kitchen.

This home belonged to the controversial championship-winning IU basketball coach, but our client, who is trained as a landscape architect, has lived there over two decades now, undertaking several renovations over the years and beautifying the wooded grounds into a fairy tale setting. She came to us ready to make the coach’s former office into a gathering space and overnight accommodation, asking us to lean into the Craftsman shell rather than the Candy Stripe history of the space.

This project is a good example of the range of tasks we are asked to undertake. We designed and specified cabinetry, layout and finishes for the kitchen, mud room, and home office. We also designed a custom fireplace wall utilizing semi-custom cabinetry line. Beautiful Cambria slab is was definitely everybody's favorite part of the project. To balance the high cost of this incredible material, we recommended a more cost-effective porcelain tile for the backsplash. Accessories, lighting and seating, selected by the client who has excellent taste and sense of design, finished out the project.

An Ensuite Transformation in Richmond Hill
This project showcases how we helped a wonderful retired couple in Richmond Hill transform their dated and dysfunctional master ensuite into a tranquil spa-like retreat. These lovely empty nesters, in their mid to late 70s, envisioned a space where they could truly relax and enjoy their time at home, especially when their family and grandkids came to visit. We were so honored to help them bring that vision to life.
Understanding Their Needs:
From our initial conversations, it was clear how much this couple valued comfort and tranquility. The existing ensuite, unfortunately, fell short of providing either. For the wife, the leaky deck-mount tub was a major disappointment, as she deeply cherished her long, hot baths. The husband, meanwhile, was eager to replace the outdated and cumbersome toilet/bidet combo with a modern, single-piece smart toilet – a desire for both convenience and a touch of modern luxury. The shower stall was cramped, dark, and plagued by mold, while the large double vanity, despite its size, lacked functional storage. It simply wasn't the relaxing oasis they deserved.
Addressing Their Concerns:
We understood that undertaking a renovation can be stressful, especially when you're not going to be on-site for much of the process. This couple was understandably concerned about potential delays, workmanship quality, and the possibility of unforeseen issues arising while they were away. We made it our priority to address each of these concerns with transparency, open communication, and a commitment to delivering on our promises.
Our Personalized Solutions:
We worked closely with the couple to develop solutions that perfectly matched their needs and desires:
● A Sanctuary for Soaking: The leaky deck-mount tub was replaced with a beautiful, freestanding oval tub – easier to access and offering a more contemporary aesthetic. The wife's vision of a small decorative table nearby for her bath essentials added a personal touch, creating a true spa-like experience.
● Modern Comfort and Convenience: The separate toilet and bidet were replaced with a sleek, high-tech smart toilet, fulfilling the husband's wish and adding a touch of modern luxury to their daily routine.
● A Bright and Inviting Shower: The cramped and moldy shower stall was completely transformed. We demolished the existing bulkhead and built a custom walk-in shower with frameless glass, a built-in bench, and a niche for toiletries. The result was a dramatically brighter and more spacious shower experience.
● Storage and Style: A semi-custom double vanity with ample cabinets and drawers was installed, finally providing each of them with dedicated storage and eliminating
countertop clutter. This seemingly small change made a huge difference in their daily lives.
● A Calming Atmosphere: We carefully selected a calming spa-like color palette, incorporating muted, neutral tones and high-quality finishes to create a truly relaxing and inviting atmosphere.
Navigating the Challenges Together:
Renovations rarely go perfectly smoothly, and this project was no exception. We encountered delays with plumbing fixture deliveries, which threatened our timeline. However, by leveraging our established relationships with reliable suppliers, we were able to find alternative solutions
and minimize the impact on the project schedule. We also faced a minor setback when the initially chosen grey vanity went out of stock. Working closely with the couple, we explored other options and ultimately selected a stunning sandstone-stained maple finish, which, as it turned out, complemented the other design elements beautifully. These moments reinforced the importance of open communication and collaboration throughout the process.
The Joy of Transformation:
The final result was truly remarkable. The transformed ensuite is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and meticulous execution. The space now features large-format, light-colored concrete-look porcelain tiles, creating a bright and airy feel. The sandstone-stained maple vanity, topped with a quartz countertop, serves as a beautiful focal point against the muted green walls. Matte black plumbing fixtures, hardware, and accessories add a touch of modern sophistication. The custom frameless shower glass enclosure enhances the spaciousness of the shower, while the smart toilet provides the ultimate in comfort and convenience.
A Space to Cherish:
The renovation has made a profound difference in this couple's daily lives. The wife can now indulge in her beloved long, hot baths in a truly tranquil setting. The husband enjoys the modern convenience of his new smart toilet. The spacious and bright walk-in shower is both beautiful and functional. And the new vanity provides ample storage, keeping the countertop clutter-free and contributing to the overall sense of peace and calm. This ensuite is no longer just a bathroom; it's a personal spa, a sanctuary within their home, where they can relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy their time together.
Memorable Moments and Hiccups:
● Budget Adjustment: After finalizing the initial design, we worked closely with the clients to reselect the freestanding tub to ensure it aligned perfectly with their budget. ● Vanity Setback: The unexpected out-of-stock situation with the original vanity color required a quick and effective re-selection process, which ultimately led to an even better design outcome. This highlighted the importance of flexibility and collaboration during a renovation.

This Villa Park home was one of our most significant undertakings at APlus. The homeowners wanted to transform their home into a modern and stylish dwelling, but they also wanted to add square footage, in the form of a luxurious master retreat, including a bedroom and large en suite bathroom. What previously existed in this Villa Park home were low ceilings and beams that created an even more closed-in feeling. The kitchen felt outdated with limited storage and cabinetry space, and a relatively small island.
After working closely with the homeowners, Alex gave them a kitchen that was beautifully modern with an expansive island topped by waterfall-edge natural stone in pristine white, custom white cabinetry, hidden storage and pantries, and luxury stainless steel appliances. The kitchen concept also features recessed lights and pendants over the island, as well as a mosaic glass tile backsplash. This area of the home seamlessly carries into the dining and living area with flowing plank flooring. The family room features a revamped fireplace with a stacked stone surround and a stylish, floating mantel.
The bedroom addition added about 600 square feet of living space to this Villa Park property, and APlus was charged with the entire construction process, starting with the pouring of concrete and framing. The result is a bedroom with vaulted ceilings and a wall of closets, along with plentiful natural light. The bathroom features a spacious double vanity and a walk-in shower, as well as freestanding storage and a separate custom vanity area. This Villa Park renovation also included a revamp of the staircase, a refresh of the formal living area and its fireplace, and a remodel of the guest bathroom to include a modern floating vanity, new flooring and updated light fixtures.
