The space is further elevated with a smart toilet and a custom semi-coffered ceiling that adds architectural interest. The kitchen serves as the heart of the home and has been fully reimagined with semi-custom cabinetry, professional-grade appliances, and distinctive gold welded wire mesh featured in many of the upper cabinet doors. Undercabinet LED lighting enhances both functionality and ambiance, while brass footrails invite guests to comfortably gather in the space. Quartz countertops and a full-height quartz backsplash complete the design, while thoughtful hidden features—such as pullout trash cans, a mixer lift, cutlery dividers, and other integrated storage solutions—ensure everyday convenience. Engineered wood flooring runs throughout the kitchen and upper two levels, tying the home together with warmth and continuity. Most walls across these floors have been painted in Benjamin Moore 983 “Smokey Taupe,” while many of the ceilings feature “Silhouette” in a flat finish, adding subtle contrast and depth to the interiors. This Villa Park home was one of our most significant undertakings at APlus. The homeowners wanted to transform their home into a modern and stylish dwelling, but they also wanted to add square footage, in the form of a luxurious master retreat, including a bedroom and large en suite bathroom. What previously existed in this Villa Park home were low ceilings and beams that created an even more closed-in feeling. The kitchen felt outdated with limited storage and cabinetry space, and a relatively small island. After working closely with the homeowners, Alex gave them a kitchen that was beautifully modern with an expansive island topped by waterfall-edge natural stone in pristine white, custom white cabinetry, hidden storage and pantries, and luxury stainless steel appliances. The kitchen concept also features recessed lights and pendants over the island, as well as a mosaic glass tile backsplash. This area of the home seamlessly carries into the dining and living area with flowing plank flooring. The family room features a revamped fireplace with a stacked stone surround and a stylish, floating mantel. A bulky double fireplace in the center of the living space took up a lot of room and made the dining room feel disconnected from the kitchen, despite the substantial opening between the two. We removed the oversized wood burning fireplace and replaced it with a smaller gas one with shiplap above, creating a stylish featured piece. Meanwhile the kitchen was reimagined and reorganized into a functional space for a home chef that will work better for years to come. These homeowners’ main concern was to update the style and function, as well as having quality materials that would stand the test of time. They wanted updated, gray cabinets; but didn’t want to lose any of the warm feeling of their home. Together with our design team they chose a light, warm gray for the perimeter cabinets and a darker gray to make the island a focal piece. This very old Encaustic tiled flooring was uncovered at a property in Chester when the present owners started to undertake renovation. They removed the carpets and vinyl tiles from the hallway, revealing the Encaustic tiles to find that they were in truly horrific condition. This included being covered by heavy dirt, dust and, in some parts, by a sticky black bitumen. Encaustic tiles are made out of compressed cement, and were commonly used in properties built during the Edwardian and Victorian period. This gives us a good idea of just how old these tiles are – but the owners were keen to see what Tile Doctor could do to restore their condition. The black bitumen was my main concern when it came to cleaning the tiles. To remove this, along with all the other dirt and dust, our powerful cleaner for heavy soil buildup, known as Tile Doctor Remove and Go, was applied. The product, which is also effective for removing adhesive and paint stains, was worked into the tiles then left to dwell for thirty minutes, before being scrubbed with a black pad fitted to a rotary machine. The resulting cleaning residue was soaked up with a wet vac machine. This cleaning process was repeated once more over to get the tiles as clean as possible, before leaving them to dry overnight. The next day, damp readings were taken to make sure the floor was dry enough to seal. It’s essential to take damp readings before sealing – especially with old tiled floors that may not have a damp proof membrane installed – as even the slightest amount of excess moisture can damage the performance of the sealer. Two types of sealer were used in this situation. First to be applied was a single coat of Tile Doctor Colour Grow, an impregnating, colour intensifying sealer which enhances the best shades in the tiles. Following this, four coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go were applied. This is a topical sealer, which means it builds a layer of protection on the surface of the floor, while also providing an aesthetically pleasing low-sheen finish. The customer was over the moon at the end result. At first the floor looked to be with a lost cause, but with the right cleaning methods and products it has been a restored to a standard where it almost appears new. Another satisfied customer!
