All of the cuts in the tile were deliberate. Notice the equal reveal on either side of the soap niche. A rectangular soap niche is not only modern and unique, but also has a much higher storage capacity than the traditional small square recess. The pony wall provides separation and privacy and also is able to support the long floating bench across the back wall.

Our clients wanted to add an ensuite bathroom to their charming 1950’s Cape Cod, but they were reluctant to sacrifice the only closet in their owner’s suite. The hall bathroom they’d been sharing with their kids was also in need of an update so we took this into consideration during the design phase to come up with a creative new layout that would tick all their boxes. By relocating the hall bathroom, we were able to create an ensuite bathroom with a generous shower, double vanity, and plenty of space left over for a separate walk-in closet. We paired the classic look of marble with matte black fixtures to add a sophisticated, modern edge. The natural wood tones of the vanity and teak bench bring warmth to the space. A frosted glass pocket door to the walk-through closet provides privacy, but still allows light through. We gave our clients additional storage by building drawers into the Cape Cod’s eave space.

Modern and sleek bathroom with black, white and gray. Black shaker cabinets with ample drawer storage and full height linen. Tie-dye gray and black Noble Marble countertops add a boho touch to this modern bathroom. A bold and edgy wall mount faucet from Waterworks adds a modern touch. The shower has simple white ceramic subway tiles with a grid pattern and contrasting black grout, accented by a unique cross shaped shampoo niche. Two different accent tiles make a statement and add a pop of color against the large white wall tiles in the custom shower. Frameless glass creates a custom and modern feel to the space. This small powder bath lacked interest and was quite dark despite having a window. We added white horizontal tongue & groove on the lower portion of the room with a warm graphic wallpaper above. A custom white cabinet with a waterfall grey and white granite counter gave the vanity some personality. New crown molding, window casings, taller baseboards and white wood blinds made impact to the small room. We also installed a modern pendant light and a rustic oval mirror which adds character to the space. BEFORE Though this bathroom had a good layout, everything was just really outdated. We added tile from floor to ceiling for a spa like feel. We kept the color palette neutral and timeless. The dark cheery cabinet was elegantly finished with crystal knobs and a cararra marble countertop. AFTER AFTER BEFORE There was an underutilized corner between the vanity and the shower that was basically wasted space. To give the corner a purpose, we added a make-up vanity in white with a custom made stool. Oversized subway tiles were added to the shower, along with a rain shower head, for a clean and timeless look. We also added a new frosted glass door to the walk-in closet to let the light in. BEFORE These beautiful oval pivot mirrors are not only functional but also showcase the cararra marble on the wall. Unique glass pendants are a dramatic addition to the space as is the ikat wallpaper in the WC. To finish out the vanity space we added a shallow white upper cabinet for additional storage. BEFORE AFTER AFTER The best part of this remodel? Tearing out the awful, dated carpet! We chose porcelain tile with the look of hardwoods for a more functional and modern space. Modern Farmhouse is a contemporary take on a tradition building type, the Connecticut farmhouse. Our clients were interested in a house that fit in with the landscape while providing plenty of daylight with views to the surrounding property. The design uses simple gables arranged in a picturesque manner. It balances clean modern lines, traditional forms, and rustic textures. The new house is bright and light while also feeling personal and unique. There was interest early on to compress the construction time and to design a building that would not take a lot of energy to run. To achieve these goals, the design of the main house used modular construction and a high performance envelope. To articulate the surfaces of the spaces, the owner assembled a group of designers and artisans. Natural textures and tones were layered over the volumes to give a sense of place and time. The modular units of the house are produced by Huntington Homes in East Montpelier, Vermont. In addition to the main house, there is a pool house that sits symmetrically on the main axis of a long swimming pool. A glass enclosed living room fits between two concrete volumes that house a bathroom and storage spaces. An outdoor shower faces south, with an oculus that lets light in when the door is closed. The simple forms of the pool house sit below a green roof, which protects the glassy room from the summer sun and integrates the building into the hilly landscape.

This couple moved from Chicago’s Wicker Park to a rural setting but wanted to maintain their modern aesthetic. Scott Dresner of Dresner Design created a modern spa oasis for the couple’s master bathroom. The second project completed by Scott in the couple’s home. On the client’s, wish list…a luxurious space to relax, a new window to replace the dated looking glass block, great storage for towels and larger items as well as smaller toiletries. Scott accomplished a variety of storage with deep vanity drawers with push hardware, medicine cabinets with storage on the entire wall, and a large linen closet. Finishes are modern with a hint of warmth created by the floating walnut vanity and trim work. LED light along the vanity and medicine cabinets create a soft ambience perfect for a relaxing bath. Floors are radiant heat, window treatment is motorized, and panel controls a speaker and LED lighting in the rain showerhead. This was a dated and rough space when we began. The plumbing was leaking and the tub surround was failing. The client wanted a bathroom that complimented the era of the home without going over budget. We tastefully designed the space with an eye on the character of the home and budget. We save the sink and tub from the recycling bin and refinished them both. The floor was refreshed with a good cleaning and some grout touch ups and tile replacement using tiles from under the toilet.

The room had been remodeled about 20 years ago as part of a large addition and consists of three separate zones – 1) tub zone, 2) vanity/storage zone and 3) shower and water closet zone. The room layout and zones had to remain the same, but the goal was to make each area more functional. In addition, having comfortable access to the tub and seating in the tub area was also high on the list, as the tub serves as an important part of the daily routine for the homeowners and their special needs son. We started out in the tub room and determined that an undermount tub and flush deck would be much more functional and comfortable for entering and exiting the tub than the existing drop in tub with its protruding lip. A redundant radiator was eliminated from this room allowing room for a large comfortable chair that can be used as part of the daily bathing routine. In the vanity and storage zone, the existing vanities size neither optimized the space nor provided much real storage. A few tweaks netted a much better storage solution that now includes cabinets, drawers, pull outs and a large custom built-in hutch that houses towels and other bathroom necessities. A framed custom mirror opens the space and bounces light around the room from the large existing bank of windows. We transformed the shower and water closet room into a large walk in shower with a trench drain, making for both ease of access and a seamless look. Next, we added a niche for shampoo storage to the back wall, and updated shower fixtures to give the space new life. The star of the bathroom is the custom marble mosaic floor tile. All the other materials take a simpler approach giving permission to the beautiful circular pattern of the mosaic to shine. White shaker cabinetry is topped with elegant Calacatta marble countertops, which also lines the shower walls. Polished nickel fixtures and sophisticated crystal lighting are simple yet sophisticated, allowing the beauty of the materials shines through. This project was such an incredible design opportunity, and instilled inspiration and excitement at every turn! Our amazing clients came to us with the challenge of converting their beloved family home into a welcoming haven for all members of the family. At the time that we met our clients, they were struggling with the difficult personal decision of the fate of the home. Their father/father-in-law had passed away and their mother/mother-in-law had recently been admitted into a nursing facility and was fighting Alzheimer’s. Resistant to loss of the home now that both parents were out of it, our clients purchased the home to keep in in the family. Despite their permanent home currently being in New Jersey, these clients dedicated themselves to keeping and revitalizing the house. We were moved by the story and became immediately passionate about bringing this dream to life. The home was built by the parents of our clients and was only ever owned by them, making this a truly special space to the family. Our goal was to revitalize the home and to bring new energy into every room without losing the special characteristics that were original to the home when it was built. In this way, we were able to develop a house that maintains its own unique personality while offering a space of welcoming neutrality for all members of the family to enjoy over time. The renovation touched every part of the home: the exterior, foyer, kitchen, living room, sun room, garage, six bedrooms, three bathrooms, the laundry room, and everything in between. The focus was to develop a style that carried consistently from space to space, but allowed for unique expression in the small details in every room. Starting at the entry, we renovated the front door and entry point to offer more presence and to bring more of the mid-century vibe to the home’s exterior. We integrated a new modern front door, cedar shingle accents, new exterior paint, and gorgeous contemporary house numbers that really allow the home to stand out. Just inside the entry, we renovated the foyer to create a playful entry point worthy of attention. Cement look tile adorns the foyer floor, and we’ve added new lighting and upgraded the entry coat storage. Upon entering the home, one will immediately be captivated by the stunning kitchen just off the entry. We transformed this space in just about every way. While the footprint of the home ultimately remained almost identical, the aesthetics were completely turned on their head. We re-worked the kitchen to maximize storage and to create an informal dining area that is great for casual hosting or morning coffee. We removed the entry to the garage that was once in the informal dining, and created a peninsula in its place that offers a unique division between the kitchen/informal dining and the formal dining and living areas. The simple light warm light gray cabinetry offers a bit of traditional elegance, along with the marble backsplash and quartz countertops. We extended the original wood flooring into the kitchen and stained all floors to match for a warmth that truly resonates through all spaces. We upgraded appliances, added lighting everywhere, and finished the space with some gorgeous mid century furniture pieces. In the formal dining and living room, we really focused on maintaining the original marble fireplace as a focal point. We cleaned the marble, repaired the mortar, and refinished the original fireplace screen to give a new sleek look in black. We then integrated a new gas insert for modern heating and painted the upper portion in a rich navy blue; an accent that is carried through the home consistently as a nod to our client’s love of the color. The former entry into the old covered porch is now an elegant glass door leading to a stunning finished sunroom. This room was completely upgraded as well. We wrapped the entire space in cozy white shiplap to keep a casual feel with brightness. We tiled the floor with large format concrete look tile, and painted the old brick fireplace a bright white. We installed a new gas burning unit, and integrated transitional style lighting to bring warmth and elegance into the space. The new black-frame windows are adorned with decorative shades that feature hand-sketched bird prints, and we’ve created a dedicated garden-ware “nook” for our client who loves to work in the yard. The far end of this space is completed with two oversized chaise loungers and overhead lights…the most perfect little reading nook! Just off the dining room, we created an entirely new space to the home: a mudroom. The clients lacked this space and desperately needed a landing spot upon entering the home from the garage. We uniquely planned existing space in the garage to utilize for this purpose, and were able to create a small but functional entry point without losing the ability to park cars in the garage. This new space features cement-look tile, gorgeous deep brown cabinetry, and plenty of storage for all the small items one might need to store while moving in and out of the home. The remainder of the upstairs level includes massive renovations to the guest hall bathroom and guest bedroom, upstairs master bed/bath suite, and a third bedroom that we converted into a home office for the client. Some of the largest transformations were made in the basement, where unfinished space and lack of light were converted into gloriously lit, cozy, finished spaces. Our first task was to convert the massive basement living room into the new master bedroom for our clients. We removed existing built-ins, created an entirely new walk-in closet, painted the old brick fireplace, installed a new gas unit, added carpet, introduced new lighting, replaced windows, and upgraded every part of the aesthetic appearance. One of the most incredible features of this space is the custom double sliding barn door made by a Denver artisan. This space is truly a retreat for our clients! We also completely transformed the laundry room, back storage room, basement master bathroom, and two bedrooms. This home’s massive scope and ever-evolving challenges were thrilling and exciting to work with, and the result is absolutely amazing. At the end of the day, this home offers a look and feel that the clients love. Above all, though, the clients feel the spirit of their family home and have a welcoming environment for all members of the family to enjoy for years to come.

Inspiration for a transitional bathroom remodel in DC Metro

The bathroom enjoys great views. The standalone white bathtub placed beside a large window is equipped with a Hans Grohe tub filler. The window features a soft custom made roman shade. We furnished the area with a blue patterned garden stool. The bathroom floor features a hexagon mosaic tile. We designed the walnut vanity with a marble countertop and backsplash, and his and her undermount sinks. The vanity is paired with unique mirrors flanked by tiny lamp sconced lighting.
