Home was designed to be a formal house but was now being used as a weekend retreat. Ann Kenkel had to decorate the house in a manner which was coastal enough so owner's felt like they were on vacation yet formal enough for the style of the house. AK found the house filled with wallpaper from the 1980's. Wallpaper from every room was removed and all trim had to be painted a neutral color. The formal dining room only had one entry. AK opened up a second entry into the dining room which provided a view of the Chesapeake Bay. This shaped gathered valance has a large rod pocket, and generous header ruffle. The shaped hem and tassel trim adds softness to the window. Long tails at the sides help frame the view, while custom cafe shutters provide privacy. This valance complemented the vintage bed and quilt in the same space. Design and Photo by Linda H. A simple valance to frame the window with a large 4" tape trim with a raised tiny pattern was just the right touch in this bathroom with clean lines. The fabric was a solid white and the border gray. Wallpaper was a vinyl grascloth look with a slight shimmer in gray. Beautiful!

Situated away from the main areas of the home are the bedrooms, including the master bedroom. This cozy space has a subtle color palette of grays and beiges with warmth added with the wooden nightstands. Concrete pendant lights over the nightstands keep the nightstands free and accessible for functional use. The vanity desk area is the perfect place to apply makeup as you get ready to start your day.

Out of seven children, twin daughters Bellamy and Tallulah hold their own as the only girls in the bunch. When recent renovations included installing the elevator, all rooms needed to be slightly reconfigured. "Our girls are getting older so we were happy to bring in something new and redecorate", says Cortney. Now into their teens, the girls have redone their bedroom to reflect their growing sense of style and independence. Above Tallulah's bed hangs a childhood portrait of her by Linda Mason. The upholstered bed frames are a recent purchase that add a decidedly feminine air to the space, while a brightly painted chair and striped draperies maintain a youthful punch. Even with two designer parents, the girls are free to weigh in on what goes into their room. "It is definitely a collaboration", Cortney explains. "[Our daughter] Bellamy really enjoys designing and has a natural talent for it. All of our kids bring their own artistic sense into their spaces, after all, we want their spaces to reflect them, too."
