The homeowners of this Corvallis Craftsman-style Passive House wanted to take advantage of their large backyard and create a space that could be an oasis to relax in or be transformed into an entertaining space for hosting family gatherings. We designed and built an all-season sunroom with folding glass panoramic doors that open up the space completely to a new TimberTech composite deck that can also be accessed from the kitchen, creating the perfect entertaining space! When these panoramic doors are closed, their thermal efficiency keeps the interior minimally affected by outdoor temperatures and produces a cozy escape during cold Oregon winters when the new wood-burning fireplace is turned on. The tile backsplash pattern behind the fireplace emulates a sensation of nature with the varying blue and green tones used in the room and complements the wood tongue and groove ceiling paneling, creating a relaxing environment. We used different types of indoor lighting that can be turned on/off depending on the desired use of the sunroom. Expert lighting design inside the sunroom and on the deck allow summer dinner parties to continue past sunset and outdoor pavers installed next to the deck create a safe play area for this family to enjoy backyard games. This sunroom and deck addition is truly nature’s haven and the perfect place to connect as a family!

For this Vermont home, the family wanted an open kitchen concept where they could have a fire crackling in the hearth while they cook and watch kids play board games at the dining table. They knew they wanted a kitchen in the country that would draw people together. Depending on the season, one could look out and see an ever-changing view from the oversized glass windows. Imagine a snowy winter wonderland, brilliant fall foliage, or summer trees so lush and green you feel like you are in a treehouse. That’s what we wanted to capture in their kitchen. We decided to add a beadboard ceiling with black accent beams for a cottage appeal, which matched the open beams in the rest of the house. We varied the cabinetry colors (grey and white), countertop surfaces (walnut butcher block and white quartz) and textures (mixed metals and glazed wood) to give the space character and height. The cabinet’s millwork includes a coffee bar, wet bar, and bead detailing around the cabinet frame with a white finish with hand-painted brushstrokes for a classic and timeless look. High-end appliances include a column refrigerator/freezer, gas range, steam convection oven, microwave, and a wet bar with wine refrigeration and refrigerator drawers.

THE SETUP When we first encountered this basement for a family with three boys, we saw a space with untapped potential. Though previously remodeled, it lacked a cohesive design strategy. The expansive area housed various entertainment pieces (a shuffleboard table, air hockey, foosball, etc.) scattered haphazardly throughout the space. While the basement included a workout room and a rudimentary kitchen area, it lacked a dedicated game room or proper bar. Excessive storage closets along the back wall consumed valuable real estate that could be repurposed for more engaging uses. In essence, the basement was spacious but disjointed—functional for family use but falling short as an entertainment hub. It didn’t align with the sophistication of the rest of the home. Our clients envisioned a transformation: a fresh, organized space that would not only serve their family’s needs but also shine as an inviting arena for entertaining friends and hosting gatherings – especially sports-focused gatherings! Design Objectives: Reimagine the basement layout, creating distinct zones for varied activities. Expand the workout area to accommodate new equipment, including a Smith machine. Implement a multi-screen setup inspired by high-end sports bars, allowing guests to follow multiple games while socializing. For this Vermont home, the family wanted an open kitchen concept where they could have a fire crackling in the hearth while they cook and watch kids play board games at the dining table. They knew they wanted a kitchen in the country that would draw people together. Depending on the season, one could look out and see an ever-changing view from the oversized glass windows. Imagine a snowy winter wonderland, brilliant fall foliage, or summer trees so lush and green you feel like you are in a treehouse. That’s what we wanted to capture in their kitchen. We decided to add a beadboard ceiling with black accent beams for a cottage appeal, which matched the open beams in the rest of the house. We varied the cabinetry colors (grey and white), countertop surfaces (walnut butcher block and white quartz) and textures (mixed metals and glazed wood) to give the space character and height. The cabinet’s millwork includes a coffee bar, wet bar, and bead detailing around the cabinet frame with a white finish with hand-painted brushstrokes for a classic and timeless look. High-end appliances include a column refrigerator/freezer, gas range, steam convection oven, microwave, and a wet bar with wine refrigeration and refrigerator drawers.

SV Design addressed the lacking elements and added practicality, with style: the multigenerational family members and friends can now appreciate space for the variety of hobbies and interests they pursue. Having worked with Siemasko + Verbridge in the past, the family turned to SV once again knowing we would design solution to address the growing list of concerns. SV’s design of a three-story addition with a relatively small footprint was just what the home needed. A covered entry now provides the option of entering the main house or stopping off in the mud room to remove boots, drop off skis, and hang up wet clothes. Regardless of the way you enter the main house you will be greeted with a naturally lit, welcoming staircase of reclaimed white oak timber treads and steel stringers and rails. Each newel post is capped off with a polished granite sphere to pay homage to the Granite State in which the house resides. The open stair invites you up to a spacious family space for playing board games, listening to music, gazing at the stars, or just lounging about in the warm comfort of the home. Traveling downstairs from the main level is a new, kid friendly media room for popcorn and movies, or a little video game sibling competition. Perhaps the most striking new feature of the home is the custom designed Adirondack style bar built of varying tones of willow branches and bank. Topped off with a contrasting aged zinc counter, backsplash and shelf the bar is the perfect spot for the resident bar tender to mix up a tasty concoction for sitting by the crackling fire just steps away. This home will provide comfort and ease for the family to relax and enjoy their getaway for years to come.
