THEME This playroom takes advantage of a high ceiling, wide floor space and multiple windows to create an open, bright space where a child can be a pirate boarding a captured ship, a chef in a cafe, a superhero flying down the slide, or just a kid swinging on a tire. FOCUS The tower and slide promise fun for all — even from the doorway. The multi-level structure doubles the play area; leaving plenty of room for a workbench, LEGO table, and other mobile toys. Below the tower, there is a chalkboard wall and desk for the young artist, as well as a toy microwave and food items for the budding chef. Brilliant primary colors on the walls and a sky blue ceiling with clouds create an entirely pleasant environment. STORAGE To accommodate a multitude of toys of varying sizes and shapes, the room is equipped with easily accessible, mobile and stationary storage units. Colorcoordinated baskets, buckets, crates and canvas bags make cleaning up a bit easier and keep the room organized. Mindful that the number and types of toys change as children age, the shelving unit features floating boards and adjustable pegs. GROWTH Designed as a family playroom with growth in mind, the room suits the needs of children of various ages. Different elements can be added or retired, and older children can keep more mature toys and games on higher shelves, safely out of a younger sibling’s reach. Lower shelving is reserved for the youngest child’s toys, books, and other treasures. SAFETY To minimize the bumps and bruises common in playrooms, exposed screws and bolts are covered by plastic molds or rope twisted around metal joiners. Elastic netting protects openings on the tower’s upper levels, while playroom activities can be monitored via any television in the house. Smaller kids are kept off the upper levels with the use of climbing net and rock wall anchors.

SV’s design of a three-story addition with a relatively small footprint was just what the home needed. A covered entry now provides the option of entering the main house or stopping off in the mud room to remove boots, drop off skis, and hang up wet clothes. Regardless of the way you enter the main house you will be greeted with a naturally lit, welcoming staircase of reclaimed white oak timber treads and steel stringers and rails. Each newel post is capped off with a polished granite sphere to pay homage to the Granite State in which the house resides. The open stair invites you up to a spacious family space for playing board games, listening to music, gazing at the stars, or just lounging about in the warm comfort of the home. Traveling downstairs from the main level is a new, kid friendly media room for popcorn and movies, or a little video game sibling competition. Perhaps the most striking new feature of the home is the custom designed Adirondack style bar built of varying tones of willow branches and bank. Topped off with a contrasting aged zinc counter, backsplash and shelf the bar is the perfect spot for the resident bar tender to mix up a tasty concoction for sitting by the crackling fire just steps away. This home will provide comfort and ease for the family to relax and enjoy their getaway for years to come.

This boy's nursery is modern with clean lines and a masculine feel. We had to get creative with placing the furniture in this design because the room is triangular in shape. The color palette for this nursery is primarily white and gray. For a bit of contrast we added navy details throughout the room. The client fell in love with a super versatile crib in white with acrylic details. We opted for a custom dresser with a changing table tray to get the perfect fit and color. One of my favorite pieces in this space is the light-colored modern rocking chair, which is compact yet comfortable. We used mixed metallics in this space so the chrome base of the rocker ties in with gold detail on the side table. Even the cozy textured gray rug has metallic details. The storage bench with a surprise pop of color doubles as additional seating. We installed two white shelving units on both sides of the bench for a peaceful, symmetrical look and a display for decor and toys. The major statement penguin photograph was a favorite of my client! We created an audio network of 15 different zones to provide a completely immersive and seamless audio experience. James Loudspeaker provided customized interior speakers that matched the size, and most importantly, the color needed for each room. This varied from an oak brown color in the study, to a mint green in the living room. Few manufacturers can provide speakers in any color like James Loudspeaker.

Benefiting from varied stone and gravel hardscapes, this back yard is used in many ways. Transitions are marked with a change in structure of paths, walls, and features. The dining area is defined by a seat wall that ends where the fire feature area starts. Garden beds surround the space as an accent, softening the space. Scott and Deneen Knisely built their handcrafted log home in Lock Haven Pennsylvania with hope to preserve a piece of their community’s history. In 2002, the Kniselys lived near a 20-acre property that included the Rocky Point Lodge, a locally known log house dating back more than 70 years. The building was serving as a restaurant at the time, but had taken on many roles over the years—first, and most notably, as a Boy Scout camp. When Scott heard a rumor that the property might be going on the market, he had a word with the owner, expressing his interest in buying it. Six weeks later, the acreage was his. “We loved the property and the building,” says Deneen, “but it was too damaged to be saved.” So they got to work researching companies to build the new home that would replace the old one. Since so many local people have fond childhood memories of time spent at the lodge, the Kniselys decided that the new structure should resemble the old one as closely as possible, so they looked for a design that would use the same footprint as the original. After a quick trip to Virginia to look at an existing house, they chose a modified version of the “Robinson,” a 3,750-square-foot plan by Hearthstone Inc. “When the house was being built, I researched things such as period molding depth, wainscoting height and the look of the floors,” says Deneen. Hearthstone even had the logs sandblasted to give them a weathered look. “We just love the rustic, warm feeling of a log home,” Deneen adds. “No other home compares.” The home is made from large-diameter eastern white pine in a profile from the Bob Timberlake series. “The log is sawn on two sides, then hand-hewn to a 6-inch thickness with varying heights,” says Ernie. To top off the home’s vintage look, Pat Woody of Lynchburg, Virginia, got to work on the chinking. Pat specializes in period reproductions and historical homes. The variations in the chinking are the perfect finishing touch to bring home the 19th-century flavor the Kniselys desired.

The natural hide rug layered on top of the jute carpet gives the family room warmth. Custom coffee tables in neutral tones and varied heights allow extra functionality and convenience for the sectional. The large flat screen TV, (not shown), with low, slatted wood modern media console finishes the space. Keep it easy, have a little fun!

Our client wanted the Gramophone team to recreate an existing finished section of their basement, as well as some unfinished areas, into a multifunctional open floor plan design. Challenges included several lally columns as well as varying ceiling heights, but with teamwork and communication, we made this project a streamlined, clean, contemporary success.
