Inspiration for a mid-sized 1960s open concept medium tone wood floor living room remodel in Chicago with white walls and a tv stand

The laundry room may be one of the most functional spaces in the house, but that didn’t stop us from treating it like a design opportunity. In fact, we believe the most used spaces deserve the most love—and this one delivers.
A showstopping patterned tile from Haus Tile anchors the room with playful sophistication, echoing the circular motifs found throughout the home. Above, deep green Tedd Wood cabinetry offers ample storage, finished with oversized Atlas Dot knobs in brass that feel as chic as they are substantial.
We incorporated thoughtful additions like a hanging rod from Signature Hardware for air-drying clothes, a long quartz work surface in Cambria Inverness Gold for folding and sorting, and an ultra-durable Blanco Silgranit sink paired with a Kingston Brass wall-mounted faucet to keep things clean and stylish. Above, glass ribbed lights from West Elm add just the right amount of sparkle.

The master bedroom of this home is full of exciting colors and textures. The dark walls allow the bed to stand out while the rug and pillows add pops of color and texture. Brad Knipstein was the photographer.

Screened Porches
Screened porches make up the rear of the house, but one can see the covered side porch at left (with Master Bath shower above) and the new back deck at the right.
The back yard is decidedly low maintenance, with its artificial turf grass and gravel areas at the perimeter (where the dogs patrol).

This small infill lot allowed for a home that builds on the traditions of Mill Valley hillside houses. Floating flat roofs that become roof decks and courtyards are carved out of the hillside. The project is a spacious 1,650 s.f. distributed on 4 levels each with Southern exposure, capturing light and warmth all year round.

Walls; Fireplace Surrounds, Partition and Structural Walls, Concrete Bottle Nook beneath kitchen countertop: We wanted to recreate a wall that had fissures, cracks and veins that would resemble the cliffs that the house was constructed on. It should be noted that we were not so concerned with exactly replicating the surrounds, but only to give the feel/impression of the surrounds.
The technique used to pour the walls was to randomly pour the concrete in the formed walls and lightly vibrate them as we wanted to keep some random air pockets to produce a bug holed rock look (too much vibration would limit the fissure effect). Once we made a first pass with the concrete in the wall…sometimes pouring a third at a time (or even two-thirds at a time depending where we wanted the fissure/fissures) we would stop and move the concrete pump to a different location and then we placed stones, shells etc onto the top of the irregular tops of the wall. In 30-45 minutes, after the initially poured concrete in the wall took a slight set, we would pour concrete again over the first pour which we dropped/placed rocks and shells on the top of the partially set up wall.
