This is what frustrated a Northwest suburban homeowner and his family. The remote was their enemy. It had turned music or video fun into a struggle. The solution: Installation of ELAN g!, the innovative, award-winning multiroom audio/video and home control system. ELAN seamlessly combines music, TV and telephone-based features such as intercom and paging to create a new kind of whole-house entertainment and communications experience. The system and its simple interface allow people to move room-to-room, controlling and accessing centrally located audio and video equipment with ease.
And that is done with the touch of a finger on a smart phone, tablet or dedicated remote. No more hassle, but, wait, the story doesn’t end. The beauty of ELAN g! is that you can start with one solution and expand into others without draining your pocketbook.
So impressed was the homeowner that a week after the initial installation, which included a system adding Internet music streaming and iTunes organization, he inquired about some of the other features of ELAN like controlling lighting and interior climate. The family travels a lot, and he wanted to be able to adjust the house from anywhere in the world. Simple. Phase 2 done.
Phase 3: Because of the travelling, he had concerns about security of the home. Simple again – Digital Home added a camera and a digital recorder, ensuring peace of mind. What had started as a one-room remote turned this residence into a smart home over the course of two months.

Built to inspire and inform, this kitchen showcases today’s most innovative solutions in real world settings. All the technology (video, audio, lighting, security and HVAC) is controlled through a single app on the iPad. Even the motorized window shades, task & accent lighting are controlled via the Lutron Lighting Control System. It allows for lighting scene selection at the touch of a single button – including a “Cook” scene which when pressed will activate the lighting to an optimal 100% over the kitchen sink & island areas and will also drop the motorized spice rack from behind the wall cabinet.

The TV lift system on this piece was controlled by a Universal Remote so the home owner only presses one button and the TV lifts up and all components including the flat screen turn on. Glass House:
The design objective was to build a house for my wife and three kids, looking forward in terms of how people live today. To experiment with transparency and reflectivity, removing borders and edges from outside to inside the house, and to really depict “flowing and endless space”. To construct a house that is smart and efficient in terms of construction and energy, both in terms of the building and the user. To tell a story of how the house is built in terms of the constructability, structure and enclosure, with the nod to Japanese wood construction in the method in which the concrete beams support the steel beams; and in terms of how the entire house is enveloped in glass as if it was poured over the bones to make it skin tight. To engineer the house to be a smart house that not only looks modern, but acts modern; every aspect of user control is simplified to a digital touch button, whether lights, shades/blinds, HVAC, communication/audio/video, or security. To develop a planning module based on a 16 foot square room size and a 8 foot wide connector called an interstitial space for hallways, bathrooms, stairs and mechanical, which keeps the rooms pure and uncluttered. The base of the interstitial spaces also become skylights for the basement gallery.
This house is all about flexibility; the family room, was a nursery when the kids were infants, is a craft and media room now, and will be a family room when the time is right. Our rooms are all based on a 16’x16’ (4.8mx4.8m) module, so a bedroom, a kitchen, and a dining room are the same size and functions can easily change; only the furniture and the attitude needs to change.
The house is 5,500 SF (550 SM)of livable space, plus garage and basement gallery for a total of 8200 SF (820 SM). The mathematical grid of the house in the x, y and z axis also extends into the layout of the trees and hardscapes, all centered on a suburban one-acre lot.
Electronic Lifestyle Associates (ela)By placing the TV up high across from the bed, the viewing angle is very comfortable and the TV height allows a 6'8" person to walk underneath. To support the 4K video distribution, we incorporated a full 5.1 surround sound audio system for this room. The wood fireplace was hand built with a small 4" x 5" picture as reference for the craftsman. This master suites lighting and A/V are all controlled via a handheld remote, iOS or Android devices and have simple commands like watch TV or goodnight to manage the lights and the A/V with the touch of a single button.
DH Audio and Home TheaterThe client moved into this space with a pair of high-end speakers he had from his last house. The built-ins were already there in his new family room. No other speaker which could fit on those shelves was going to be any better, or even as good, as the speakers he already owned--not without spending many thousands of dollars. It made sense to modify the built-ins to better fit the existing speakers. This photo shows the built-ins after that modification. Another photo shows the speaker and the shelves before the modification.
An upgradeable TV and audio system, commensurate in quality to the speakers, was provided by DH Audio and Home Theater. The system is upgradeable by both software updates and by virtue of its NAD Master Series surround sound processor which uses a design much like a PC tower with its removable card slots. New technologies (4k video, MQA) have already come along since the introduction of this surround processor for which the owner can buy and or upgrade the removable cards.
This cabinet is also the heart of a Bluesound wireless and expandable multi-room music system that the customer favored for its superior sound quality (e.g. over Sonos).
Ease-of-use was also a must, so DH Audio & Home Theater custom programmed a remote so that one button press is all that's required to call up Fios HD TV, Netflix, Blu-ray discs, family photos and video, or music.
