Challenges were many, but with clients ready to make it happen we went to work. The sloping back yard required two retaining walls that provided a perfect home for the poolscape. Color was a must, and waterfalls were desired. Existing woodland at the back of the property were used to create a beautiful natural back drop for this new living area. The deck was modified to create easy access, and the security fencing was designed to be hidden while in the poolscape.

Inspiration for a large contemporary home design remodel in Los Angeles

This was initially a steep slope in a front yard that was covered with grass and weeds.We built two weathered steel retaining walls to create three terraces made accessible by steel-framed steps filled with gravel and a flagstone paver path. The terraces that are flanked by beautiful drought resistant plants complete with drip irrigation make this front yard not only aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly, but most importantly, usable!

This backyard is dense, inner city neighborhood. The trellises are mounted in front of cement wall belonging to business. An apartment flanks another side.

Close up of same front yard bed - different year when a Oakleaf Hydrangea starts to dominate (relocated it in 2014). Catnip and Liriope line the front and have no problem with road salt and dog urine. The Catnip blooms from June to November since this bed becomes full sun as the season turns to winter.

This large house was designed while working at another firm in Idaho. I was the project architect for the house. The owner wanted a southwestern style feel with large log detailing. Extensive patio and outdoor spaces made this home live large in the summer months.
