This mid-century ranch-style home in Pasadena, CA underwent a complete interior remodel and exterior face-lift-- including this vibrant cyan entry door with reeded glass panels and teak post wrap and address element.

Working with Leslie Katzman Design to connect this house to the ground and nature, we created an urban front yard with drivable grass, a green wall of jasmine vines, and drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plants.

Unique textures, printed rugs, dark wood floors, and neutral-hued furnishings make this traditional home a cozy, stylish abode. Adrienne DeRosa © 2014 Houzz Inc. Refreshingly bright and airy, the master bedroom was designed with retreat in mind. With five children in the house at the time, Raymond and Jennifer immediately recognized the need for their own floor and claimed the third story for themselves. "It's definitely so high up that it makes it easy to get away," Jennifer explains. "I open the windows that face the lake and just listen to the waves break, and catch a minute." The palladian window is generously sized, filling the room with light and the sounds of nature. The headboard was another piece salvaged and put to a new use. The old barn door was purchased from Jennifer's friend that was moving her store front and no longer had use for it. Seeing its potential, Jennifer and her sister committed to a two-hour journey of getting the door up to the top floor. The pool area features a rectangular pool with Santa Barbara stone coping. The pool has color changing lights and underwater speakers. The pool is flanked by a dining and lounging pergola. Columns of molded brick with Santa Barbara stone bases support the wooden trellis above. Steve Handleman lights of Santa Barbara hang between each bay. As an end focal point of this space, I designed a quaint pool bath house using 500 year old church windows and Santa Barbara Stone. One of the outside corners of the pool bath house is an outdoor shower. Hand-turned guard rails line the edge of the Ipe wood deck overlooking the creek below. All of the pottery, as well as, the church window were purchase from our friends at Eye of the Day. A unique feature to this pool area is that there is a vault beneath the pool area containing a generator to power the residence for two weeks. This challenge in design led to me bringing the exhaust stacks inside of one of the pergola columns and venting above. The pool equipment is also located in the vault. Photo by: Wendy Harper

This outdated Mid Century ranch built in late 1950’s was in serious need of an update. Our clients wanted a fresh contemporary feel that was simple in design and reflected the original Mid Century feel of the home. The new frosted Plexiglas railing allows the now open staircase and modern pendant to become part of the small dining area. White painted cabinetry with slab doors and minimal pulls add a lighter component and balance out the dark walnut cabinetry. The (3) built-in charging drawers, Legrand retractable outlets and a single door hood that opens with a light touch add a "cool" functional vibe to the space., Gray quartz countertops and a rectilinear white tile backsplash add serenity and tie in the stainless appliances giving the kitchen a modern feel. A wood waterfall countertop detail on the back of the island adds interest to the space and is anchored by the unique handblown wave glass pendants in a soft grey color. Guest house with playhouse/shed. This project was a Guest House for a long time Battle Associates Client. Smaller, smaller, smaller the owners kept saying about the guest cottage right on the water's edge. The result was an intimate, almost diminutive, two bedroom cottage for extended family visitors.
