Inspiration for a mid-sized rustic medium tone wood floor and brown floor sunroom remodel in Minneapolis with a standard ceiling

When a soft contemporary style meets artistic-minded homeowners, the result is this exquisite dwelling in Corona del Mar from Brandon Architects and Patterson Custom Homes. Complete with curated paintings and an art studio, the 4,300-square-foot residence utilizes Western Window Systems’ Series 600 Multi-Slide doors and windows to blur the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. In one instance, the retractable doors open to an outdoor courtyard. In another, they lead to a spa and views of the setting sun. Photos by Jeri Koegel.

Cedar Cove Modern benefits from its integration into the landscape. The house is set back from Lake Webster to preserve an existing stand of broadleaf trees that filter the low western sun that sets over the lake. Its split-level design follows the gentle grade of the surrounding slope. The L-shape of the house forms a protected garden entryway in the area of the house facing away from the lake while a two-story stone wall marks the entry and continues through the width of the house, leading the eye to a rear terrace. This terrace has a spectacular view aided by the structure’s smart positioning in relationship to Lake Webster. The interior spaces are also organized to prioritize views of the lake. The living room looks out over the stone terrace at the rear of the house. The bisecting stone wall forms the fireplace in the living room and visually separates the two-story bedroom wing from the active spaces of the house. The screen porch, a staple of our modern house designs, flanks the terrace. Viewed from the lake, the house accentuates the contours of the land, while the clerestory window above the living room emits a soft glow through the canopy of preserved trees.

The living room features floor to ceiling windows with big views of the Cascades from Mt. Bachelor to Mt. Jefferson through the tops of tall pines and carved-out view corridors. The open feel is accentuated with steel I-beams supporting glulam beams, allowing the roof to float over clerestory windows on three sides. The massive stone fireplace acts as an anchor for the floating glulam treads accessing the lower floor. A steel channel hearth, mantel, and handrail all tie in together at the bottom of the stairs with the family room fireplace. A spiral duct flue allows the fireplace to stop short of the tongue and groove ceiling creating a tension and adding to the lightness of the roof plane.

This award-winning and intimate cottage was rebuilt on the site of a deteriorating outbuilding. Doubling as a custom jewelry studio and guest retreat, the cottage’s timeless design was inspired by old National Parks rough-stone shelters that the owners had fallen in love with. A single living space boasts custom built-ins for jewelry work, a Murphy bed for overnight guests, and a stone fireplace for warmth and relaxation. A lovely, relaxing family room, complete with gorgeous stone surround fireplace, topped with beautiful crown molding and beadboard above. Open beams and a painted ceiling, the French Slider doors with transoms all contribute to the feeling of lightness and space. Gorgeous hardwood flooring, buttboard walls behind the open book shelves and white crown molding for the cabinets, floorboards, door framing...simply lovely.

This modern farmhouse located outside of Spokane, Washington, creates a prominent focal point among the landscape of rolling plains. The composition of the home is dominated by three steep gable rooflines linked together by a central spine. This unique design evokes a sense of expansion and contraction from one space to the next. Vertical cedar siding, poured concrete, and zinc gray metal elements clad the modern farmhouse, which, combined with a shop that has the aesthetic of a weathered barn, creates a sense of modernity that remains rooted to the surrounding environment. The Glo double pane A5 Series windows and doors were selected for the project because of their sleek, modern aesthetic and advanced thermal technology over traditional aluminum windows. High performance spacers, low iron glass, larger continuous thermal breaks, and multiple air seals allows the A5 Series to deliver high performance values and cost effective durability while remaining a sophisticated and stylish design choice. Strategically placed operable windows paired with large expanses of fixed picture windows provide natural ventilation and a visual connection to the outdoors.

The island is a dark charcoal with cool undertones that coordinates with the cabinetry and transom work in both the neighboring mudroom and breakfast area. White subway tile, quartz countertops, white enamel pendants and gold fixtures complete the update. The ends of the island are shiplap material that is also used on the fireplace in the next room. In the new mudroom, we used a fun porcelain tile on the floor to get a pop of pattern, and walnut accents add some warmth. Each child has their own cubby, and there is a spot for shoes below a long bench. Open shelving with spots for baskets provides additional storage for the room. The sunroom addition extends the entertaining space and allows the homeowners to comfortably use the room year-round. It features a coffered ceiling and a Rumford fireplace composed of repurposed barn beams and fieldstone to tie into the home's exterior. Living room design in Dallas featuring a fireplace with built-in shelving, layered decor, and balanced seating, creating a bright, cohesive space with thoughtful styling and everyday functionality.

We took advantage of the double volume ceiling height in the living room and added millwork to the stone fireplace, a reclaimed wood beam and a gorgeous, chandelier. The sliding doors lead out to the sundeck and the lake beyond. TV's mounted above fireplaces tend to be a little high for comfortable viewing from the sofa, so this tv is mounted on an adjustable pull down bracket for use when the fireplace is not turned on. Floating white oak shelves replaced upper cabinets above the bar area.
