We brought Derek onto a large and complex project that had early troubles—timeline delays and execution issues with the designers had put us in a difficult position. Derek stepped in and completely turned things around. The DMH team quickly got up to speed, and helped us work through every challenge with a calm, solutions-focused approach. With a project this size, challenges were bound to arise but the DMH team ensured everything was completed to a very high standard. The whole team was wonderful to work with—courteous, friendly, and professional throughout. Derek made what could have been a very stressful experience feel more manageable, and we’re incredibly grateful for the help we got from the full DMH team.

Derek and his team were great to work with from start to finish. We have a unique single wall construction home, and it was really important to find a GC who appreciated the character of our home as much as we do. Working with the design team was an easy process, they listened to what was important to us and helped us throughout the process in designing each room in the style we wanted. Rich was the perfect man to work on our home, he takes a tremendous amount of pride in the work that he does. He was meticulous working on the job site. Whenever we could repurpose material within the house, he made sure to save everything until we agreed we didn't need it or couldn't repurpose it for a different project. We were really happy with our experience working with Derek and his team, and would be happy to refer Derek to anyone who is looking for a GC to renovate or remodel their home.

Over the years we have done significant renovations on 4 houses, the most recent being a full kitchen and laundry remodel and new entertainment center with DM Hultenius. It was clear from our initial meeting with Derek that he would be great to work with. His experience, creativity, eye for quality, relaxed “can do” attitude and desire to have a satisfied customer at the end of the project would be reason enough to work with him. What we discovered is that in addition, he has a fantastic team of employees and subcontractors – all of whom did excellent work, were true professionals and a joy to have in our home. Derek suggested that we consider using Countrywide Cabinetry and introduced us to Jon Warcholik. My husband is an architect, and he provided Derek and Jon with detailed plans at the outset. Jon masterfully used a cabinet design program that enables him to finesse the fully custom cabinet sizes to create a truly beautiful and space efficient result. His state-of-the-art facility manufactures high quality cabinets, and his installers are second to none. We wanted sleek, modern, frameless cabinets and Jon and his team at Countrywide delivered! It is so rare to look back on a project and want to heap praise on each trade involved. In this case it is worth calling attention to the DM Hultenius onsite team who were conscientious, careful to protect our home during construction and did excellent framing and tile work. In addition, the sub-contractors were each outstanding in their respective fields. We were very impressed with the demo crew, the plumbing and electrical contractors, the drywall team, the painter, the flooring installer, the countertop fabricator – all of whom we would recommend and use again given the need. Our glass panel backsplash was manufactured and installed by Cast Glass Images in San Diego and it was the perfect complement to the kitchen design. The project moved along quickly with very few delays, and the cost was in line with Derek’s projection. We wholeheartedly recommend DM Hultenius for your construction needs.

We recently had the pleasure of working with Derek and his team on the renovation of our kitchen, pantry, laundry room, and living room. From start to finish, Derek made the entire process seamless. One of the standout aspects of working with Derek was his open communication and willingness to discuss challenging situations. He was always available to brainstorm solutions and was receptive to our ideas. We definitely had a specific vision for our space, and Derek honored it, turning it into a stunning reality. Derek's team of workers were equally amazing. The guys were consistently punctual, polite, hard-working, and always swept and cleaned up after themselves each day. They were also willing to discuss and troubleshoot ideas and problems that would come up, reducing the stress that often comes with big renovations. From my first interaction with Derek I knew he was going to be the one I picked to do my Kitchen remodel. He came off with a can do attitude with regards to our vision of the kitchen we wanted, not pretentious, but sincere and knowledgeable about how he was going to proceed. He came in on budget and on the time line he committed too. All his subcontractors were always on time and on the same page, always cleaning before they left for the day. Having Dave as part of the team made the entire project go smooth. He just brought a wealth of knowledge to the remodel, that added to the keeping the project on track. Being a apartment manger for over forty years, while over seeing countless projects, it was very reassuring seeing the quality of work on my remodel being performed. Derek always maintained a high level of integrity on the the remodel, constantly communicating what he was doing and were we were on the project timeline. Overall this kitchen remodel went better then we expected, just as I figured Derek would deliver.

What a fantastic experience. Everyone always talks about the stress of a major remodel…but Derek’s down-to-Earth personality and can-do philosophy alleviates all anxiety that usually accompanies any construction project. If you hire D.M Hutlenius as your contractors you can expect excellent service, on time completion and a giant smile on your face. At the end of your project you will be screaming from the top of your roof telling everyone you know how wonderful they are!! We interviewed a total of four contractors. When we met Derek we knew immediately he was the one we were going to hire. He has amazing vision, he is down to Earth, very accessible, easy to talk to, and has competitive pricing! All of the workers who showed up to our house were extremely professional, friendly, competent and worked hard to complete our project. My husband always referred to them as Magicians. At the end of each workday, the project always clean and free of any debris that would pose a problem to our 7 year old. Our biggest and only regret, was not hiring Derek to create the plans for our project. Time after time when it was discovered that our architect made a mistake or lacked necessary details on the plans…Derek came to the rescue and delivered amazing solutions! We’re the happiest people in the world: Derek and his team transformed our backyard into a STUNNING RESORT!!

We hired DM Hultenius to add another bedroom, bathroom, and laundry room onto our home in La Mesa. Derek, Dave, and the entire crew were a pleasure to work with. My mom had worked with DM Hultenius to do a full house renovation in the past and the results were stunning. We contracted with them to remodel two rental units that were sitting on our property in Mission Hills. We were impressed by Derek's professionalism, efficiency, and quality of work. The project turned out just as we wanted it. Highly recommended for home remodel work -- both big and small.

We were looking to have a total home renovation and had a few estimates submitted to us and we consulted some of the local product suppliers for referrals. During the process Derek was referred to us and we felt that the communication and working relation was the best. We never were pressured to pay any up front fees for the project design development until we all had come to an agreement on the scope of that work. He took the time to bring practical construction experience into the process that gave us many different ideas to consider. This was important because many construction groups and designers required large non-refundable fees to do any kind of design work beyond some simplistic ideas. The estimate was slightly higher for DMHultenius but the quality of work was excellent. Derek was always available for questions and made sure we were happy with every part of the job before every step was completed. He was very concerned about our happiness. All of his crew members are very professional and efficient. They were very good at keeping the construction mess cleaned every day and kept the impact of some of the unavoidable dust and inconvenience to a minimum. Whether your job is big or small, I think it is worth your while to take the time to give Derek an interview and a chance to do an evaluation of your next job.

The entire crew at DM Hultenius is beyond professional, organized, creative, and I can not praise them enough. As an interior designer, I search high and low for quality contractors and builders and these guys are constantly exceeding expectations. Recently partnered with them a full home remodel and they were on top of everything from flooring, plumbing, walls, paint, electrical and counters (just to name a few). Very competitively priced and easy to work with!

Overall, I am very please with my remodel experience with DM Hultenius. Derek did a fantastic job in designing a layout for my NEW open concept kitchen and living room as well as combining two bedrooms into one in order to make a master suite on the ground floor. I have a fabulous new bathroom and a very large walk in closet as well as a "makeup" vanity area. There were a few hiccups on the way and moments of frustration on both sides, but the job was completed and turned out beautiful.

Derek and the crew remodeled half of my house. All of the tasks they worked in were completed flawlessly, well ahead of schedule, and on budget. It has been two years now and the house still feels new. Awesome work. The kitchen is the best part. Expert carpentry and an outstanding electrician.

Derek and Dave Hultenius were wonderful during the remodel of our three bathrooms. They were so professional, friendly, and extremely knowledgeable. They took time helping us envision different creative designs (for example, they thought of adding a window that we never even considered before, and it turned out amazing!). Once the project started, they responded quickly to our calls/texts, were always very calm and focused, and cleaned up before they left each day. They also stayed on budget and on deadline. Another thing that made such a difference is that they hired such top quality employees and subcontractors (Juan is AMAZING - a true artist with his tile work, Richard and Arthur were incredible, and Karen was so responsive when we had questions, and so kind. My husband and I (and kids) absolutely love our finished bathrooms. We feel so pampered and happy every day we use them, and so appreciative we found DM Hultenius!

Derek and Dave Hultenius are the best to work with. Their knowledge of design and construction are evident from the first encounter. They helped modify the design plans to meet our desires with what was feasible for our home. The results were stunning and we couldn't be happier. We used them for two different remodeling phases and they also helped get us going on other minor projects with qualified workmen and specialists to finish off our entire home.

Derek and his team are professionals. I would hire them again. There were a few delays here and there, but nothing that stands out. I'm very pleased with the end result.

I don't plan on ever taking on a project like that again without hiring them. Derek came highly recommended and I felt it was a good fit from the first meeting. I am usually very clear with what I want but the kitchen had me stumped. I had problems describing what I wanted because I wasn't really sure. Derek took that and somehow came up with a great design. That process cemented my decision they were the right company for me. Derek was always very easy to get a hold of and talk to. He handled my moments of panic as the pro he is. All of his subcontractors were great and did quality work. I had a unique project that required DMH to install a custom made window and Derek was great about meeting with the company and calling them right away when they had questions. My one regret was I wish I had learned earlier in the project to just trust them. Before and during demo I often worried that maybe we hadn't gone over details enough or maybe I missed something and would realize it too late. I soon learned they do think of all the details I hadn’t. As stressful as it all can be I actually enjoyed the process because I knew I was in good hands with DM Hultenius Corp leading the project. Everyone at DM Hultenius is extremely nice and amazing in their own right. Dave, Richard, Arthur are all true craftsman. Karen keeps the place organized and quickly responded to my emails. Derek does a lot but I think it mostly all comes down to keeping everyone on all sides sane and happy. During remodel Karen sent me a link to an article on decorating patios. That was not part of their scope but she knew I wanted to have an updated backyard to match my new kitchen. Derek really takes the effort to get to know your style, what you like and really tries to anticipate and manage the project to tailor to you. I feel those types of thoughtful moments really set DM Hultenius apart. I could write a book with examples of how great the group has been over the last few months. I will say I had to wait a little bit to get started BUT the first time I met Derek he said "we'd love to work with you but we have a lot of projects going right now so you'd have to wait to get started." From the beginning I told Derek I would wait to get started as long as the project didn't stall once they got to me. He agreed and kept his word. I mention that not as a negative or constructive point against DMH but a warning to you. Do not skip out on using the company if you find there might be a wait. I caught up to a coworkers home remodel project that started 10 months before mine because he picked the wrong company. They posted photos of my kitchen. I only added one so someone could connect the review with the kitchen if they want to.

We are thoroughly pleased with our new kitchen! Derek had great design ideas and was with us through the whole process, including selection of materials. Tear down and demolition went smoothly and they were very neat. During construction, we had a few issues that were not the fault of DM Hutenius and Derek made sure everything was set right. The quality is great. These are “good people”.

This was not a small remodel project. There were (2) phases, per my request, that included the Master Suite, Guest Bath, Laundry and Studio. Derek was always reachable and I trusted his advice and guidance. He uses design software with 3D imaging that helped me visualize the final project. The on-site team was dependable and efficient; I always knew Dave had everything under control. Even the best plans change during remodels and the team handled these with great patience. On top of everything Derek also helped me find some subcontractors for other projects that I needed help with. I certainly know who to call when I decide to do any remodel work to my rental in Lemon Grove!

Derek and his team were great and awesome to work with they do top quality work the price is reasonable. I would recommend them to anybody. Just look at some of his work is very detail orientated . They show up on time every day they're very people friendly and they listen to you.

Dave and Derek Hultenius and their teams were easy to work with, understood our vision and gave us lots of feedback to improve the final outcome. We LOVE our new kitchen and master bathroom along with the other improvements the Hultenius team took care of along the way! We recently had our bathroom area remodeled by DM Hultenius Corporation (Dave and Derek Hultenius). They could not have been more professional and easy to work with. The quality was exceptional and where there were problems (really only `mole hills, but to me the home owner mountains) they resolved them to my pleasure and satisfaction. Changes were easily accepted by them and they improved the final results with exceptional imputs and suggestions. Our decorator found them very easy to work with and the project proceeded as a team having a common goal; "My wife's and my satisfaction." The cost was what I expected for high-end work by craftsman overseen continuously by Derek. People now walk in to this area and comment that it is as if they are in a 5 Star Hotel. I cannot recomment Derek and David Hultenius and our decorator Regina Kurtz (Alpha Design Group) enough.

I have worked with a number of General Contractors, both for professionally and personally with my home and my rentals. My designer Sue Smith DW Interiors (She is the BEST!) recommended DM Hultenius Company to remodel my kitchen. They did a fabulous job. I also had them do my deck and patio cover and that was a wonderful job as well. I would definitely hire them again, and would recommend them to everyone I know. Last October 2015 we embarked on an addition while expecting our fourth child. Knowing this would be our permanent home for quite some time, we hired DM Hultenius. Derek, his dad and phenomenal crew turned our existing home into our dream home by adding 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and adjusting existing bedroom and bathrooms to flow within the design of our new addition. Every step of the way, Derek communicated with us about next steps, adjustments and recommendations to improve upon what was laid out on our paper plans. His expertise and vision of what could be, was invaluable and his crew was a pleasure to work with. They were always friendly, on time and professional in craftsmanship and work ethic. They cleaned up every day leaving their “work in progress” admirable. Derek was always upfront about what was working (and not working) and not only advised on best path forward but compromised with us when we needed to make adjustments. He was very mindful and respectful to our situation of living in a home with 3 young children and one on the way during the construction. Since the new addition was completed, our friends are in awe of what we were able to do with less than 500 square feet and how much space and room we have for our family. We truly love our new home and how everything turned out. We were looking for quality, value, creative problem solving, and effective communication. Overall, we were very pleased and would recommend DM Hultenius highly.

We started planning (still were not 100% committed yet) our expansion project with Derek and his team in October of 2015. Wen we received word in December that we were expecting our second child, we decided to move forward ASAP. We worked with Derek on the layout and detail and submitted plans to the City in February. Everything went smooth and we had our permit in March (that was lighting fast!)! Our main concern was living through the renovation (safety, noise, disruption, etc.) and being complete before the baby arrived. Derek was with us the entire way and made the renovation as disruptive as possible. Derek assured us that we would be done in 3 months (2 months before the next baby), and he delivered. All of the respective trades were scheduled ahead of time so there were minimal days without work. This is how they made the deadline. He stayed completely on budget, with the exceptions of my additional requests along the way. Our residence was a single story 2,100 sf house with 3 bed/3 bad. We added on a new bedroom and ADA bathroom to the front of the house and expanded out the back of the house to create a Master Suite. The ADA bath was a challenge due to the details. We have a roll in shower with grab bars and a fold down bench, all of which had to be carefully planned out ahead of time due to the plumbing and functionability of the layout. We tore out the existing master bath and tripled it's size, added a walk in closet and almost double the master bedroom. We added almost 700 new sf and well as renovating the inside for the Master Suite. Even though we were living through this, we were also in a safe environment as they built a temporary wall to separate the living spaces form the work area. All of the works were very respective and conscience of my (pregnant) wife and 1 year old, who were there the whole time. We always felt save. No renovation is perfect and we did have some bumps in the road, however they were easily mitigated by Derek and his team. We could not be happier with our experience! I would highly recommend Derek for your upcoming renovation!

DM Hultenius remodeled our two upstairs bathrooms and master closet in 2013 and we are thrilled with the results. Our home is a 35 year old track house, and the bathrooms were in definite need of repair and modernization. We started the process by working with Derek Hultenius to come up with an acceptable design and estimated budget for what the job would cost. Derek listened to our desires for what we were looking for with our bathroom remodel. He showed us multiple floor plans that presented the various design options for us to consider, including a reconfigured design of our master bath / master closet area that we ended up choosing. We love the results, and are thankful every day that DMH did such an amazing job of designing and building much more usable bathrooms, along with much improved master walk-in closet, than we ever dreamed possible. DMH workers were all very courteous and cleaned up all work areas at the end of each day. This allowed us to continue to live in our home while it was being remodeled. They worked the guest bathroom first, getting it functional for us to use, while they gutted and rebuilt our master bathroom and closet. DMH included us in decision making as questions came up during the remodel process. In most cases, these changes did not impact the final cost. We are thrilled with the tile work, glass work, custom cabinets, and custom built-in master closet and of course the quality of the overall remodel project. We absolutely would give DM Hultenius our highest recommendation.

This is the second time, my family has had an opportunity to work with Derek and Dave. The first time was in 1996 when Dave created a wonderful bedroom retreat with a library that continues to be then envy of everyone who is allowed into our sanctuary In 2015, Derek created with Dave a kitchen attached to our family room that meets our love of entertaining and our families enjoyment of cooking together. The area adds a signature statement to our home while being welcoming and functional. It is always a pleasure to work with quality professionals.

It was a pleasure doing business with Derek at DM Hutenius. We had a tricky situation wherein we had asked for a deck to be built from our master bedroom. Derek and team were quick to draw up plans and more importantly very patient as we went through several iterations till we felt it was good to go. The work done by them was nothing short of professional and at the same time reasonable. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending DM Hultenius given their track record and job well done!

The job was done on time and within budget. When he was finished the place was so clean you didn't even know he had been there.

DM Hultenius did a remarkable job on assisting us with our remodel and repair work done following a water damage injury. They were insightful on making changes to make our home more beautiful giving it a very custom feel. Derek was consistently on time and responsive to our needs/concerns/questions. My husband and I used Hultenius Corporation on two separate phases of our whole house remodel. We initially interviewed five or six contractors, and Derek Hultenius came out on top, both with his design ideas and cost estimates. We had to live in our house during both stages of remodel and Derek and his team made it as easy as possible, respected our privacy and cleaned up every day. Derek is a very talented designer, has great ideas and provided 3D drawings so we could visualize and make choices. We have an older house and there were some unpleasant surprises behind a few walls during demolition, but Derek took it in stride and helped us keep calm. He remodeled our master bathroom, created a small walk-in closet, added a sliding glass door in the master bedroom, reconfigured the door into the bedroom, tore out a small bathroom in the middle of the house, re-elevated step down areas so everything was on one level, added and took away several walls, redesigned our family room, moved the family room fireplace to another area (it is beautiful!), added cabinets and a giant TV space so the TV can be pulled out and rotated, and added a pantry in the kitchen. My favorite is our guest bathroom where Derek fit a shower and jacuzzi tub where one would think it was impossible. A great example of working with Derek was when I picked out a window for the guest bathroom during construction, it was installed and I hated it. Derek said "Hey, no problem, we'll fix it". We picked out a much larger window, which of course involved a lot of reframing, and it looks great. In that regard, I've heard stories of contractors and their expensive 'change orders'. Derek was always willing to make changes and only charged time and materials. We have other projects in the pipeline and will probably be working with Derek again...and again.

I hired DM Hultenius for a complete kitchen remodel. This was a 4 month project. All aspects of the project from computer aided design, innovative lighting and glass bar construction, adjustments to difficult structural problems and the dreaded last-minute changes, were done expertly with grace, understanding and professionalism. They were soooooooo good, I had them build my outdoor kitchen. I luv these guys!

We basically gutted the center of the house and rebuilt the kitchen, dining, family, and living rooms. The work was completed beautifully, by our deadline, and passed all inspections. Every day we enjoy the remodel. Before starting work, we went through many design iterations with Derek, and he offered many good suggestions. He was great to work with. This job was the second one with DM Hultenius. I have the third one in mind, too.

My husband and I knew that we wanted to do a complete interior remodel of our house but we had no idea where to start. Our designer, Sue Smith, recommended DM Hultenius because of their quality of work and great customer service. We met with Derek at our home to go over our vision for our house. He and Sue worked extremely well together to take our ideas and turn them into a design plan which he showed us in a 3D video at his office, so awesome!!! Derek really listened to our wants and designed a plan to get us what we wanted within our budget. We ended up doing a full remodel of our kitchen, living room including fireplace, master bedroom, closet, and bathroom, new windows and doors, and new flooring throughout our house. I have heard how stressful remodels can be and I wasn't excited about going through the process but I have to say Derek and his team made this as stress free as it could be. A majority of the work, minus minor details and a few changes we added in at the end, was completed in 3 1/2 months! Considering that our entire house minus the one guest room we were living out of was gutted I couldn't believe how fast the process went. We are so happy with the quality of work, our house is gorgeous and is better than what we could have envisioned ourselves. Any concerns that we had throughout the process Derek addressed immediately. Derek and Sue worked seamlessly together so if you need a designer as well I would book them both!

We received a full kitchen and bath remodel. The design was creative, the craftsmanship was top-notch and the workers were clean and respectful. They were also flexible with any changes that were requested in the middle of construction. The only critique I can come up with is that in the beginning things move quickly but towards the end the details happen much slower. That being said, the job was finished in the time frame promised. I highly recommend.
