MD Construction designed and built our custom home in the Lake Tahoe area during 2016. Working with MD Construction was a genuine pleasure from start to finish and we would highly recommend MD Construction for construction of a custom home on account of several factors, chiefly among them: superb craftsmanship, the ability to perform many aspects of construction in-house to a very high standard, excellent communication throughout the entire construction process, a highly competent project management team, fair and transparent billing, and impressive warranty support post-close.
We selected MD Construction after having purchased a building site and after speaking with a handful of construction companies specializing in high-end construction in the Lake Tahoe area. We were impressed by MD Construction’s willingness to meet with us repeatedly, including visiting the building site and providing suggestions before we had finalized our choice of a builder. We also appreciated MD Construction’s willingness to engage in discussions around per-square-foot cost of construction very early on and offer candid assessments of build cost. We had a specific budget in mind and selecting a builder who was comfortable balancing the joint goals of constructing a luxurious custom home and remaining within a set budget was an important factor in our selection criteria.
MD Construction designed, architected and engineered the proposed home including siting it on the building site to maximize views and privacy, patiently iterating through numerous design variations. During this phase of the process we were particularly impressed with MD Construction’s use of technology; many meetings took place via video-conferencing and screen-sharing enabling us to rapidly explore design alternatives without the overhead of traveling for an in-person meeting. MD Construction also leveraged on-line project management and file sharing tools enabling us to upload images of product samples and to review all bids and track construction progress from the large number of detailed photos MD Construction took and made available online. Once final plans had been drafted, MD Construction expeditiously managed the permitting process which required sign-off from multiple agencies.
An essential component in building a custom home of superb quality is selecting qualified sub-contractors who can collaborate well and complete their work in a timely fashion. MD Construction leveraged its strong relationship with various contractors throughout the build process. Selected sub-contractors were invited to submit bids for our review and MD Construction answered our questions regarding the bids, enabling us retain a large degree of control over the budget. Once sub-contractors were chosen MD Construction managed the scheduling, inspection, payment and lien release process without us needing to be involved. When questions arose or changes were proposed on our site visits during the construction process, MD Construction promptly engaged the respective sub-contractors to address any issues raised.
MD Construction distinguishes itself in its ability to perform many stages of the construction process, particularly “user-facing” ones, in-house, which enables greater control over the finished product and can result in considerable cost savings. MD Construction applied its in-house expertise in finish carpentry, paint, masonry and metal-working with impressive results. For complex and/or costly designs, MD Construction built mocks of the proposed design for our evaluation to ensure the finished product would align with what we had envisioned.
MD Construction operates without excessive personnel overhead but has strong customer-orientation. Throughout the build process we had a dedicated project manager and direct access to MD Construction’s principal with whom we met regularly to review progress and ideate on the execution of various design elements. Invoicing was highly transparent, provided in regular intervals and with full supporting documentation.
Following completion of the project MD Construction has remained highly responsive. Warranty requests, logged via a dedicated online portal, are promptly reviewed and equally promptly addressed, including calling the responsible sub-contractors on-site and supervising them during warranty repairs, eliminating the need for us to schedule around repair visits.
MD Construction has been very successful in helping us realize our vision for a luxurious custom-designed home which is highly functional and which was completed within the time and cost envelopes we had agreed to prior to commencing construction. We would commission MD Construction for any future design and construction without any hesitation and would equally warmly recommend their services to others seeking to build a custom home of the highest quality.
