About Us

DOES Architecture is a bespoke architecture practice based in San Francisco, California. We specialize in residential and commercial projects in a variety of styles, with an emphasis on sustainable, finely crafted designs that meet the budget, tastes, and needs of our clients. Founding Principal Eric Staten, AIA, LEED AP B/D+C founded the practice in 2010 after more than 20 years with some of the most noted architectural firms in the Bay Area, including the Stanley Saitowitz Office, SMWM, and Tannerhecht Architects. His experience ranges from custom interior renovations and single and multi-family housing design, to restaurant, hospitality, retail, health care, and transportation architecture.

My wife and I commissioned Eric to renovate the rear of our house and deck area in San Francisco. Eric developed great design options for us to work with, was flexible based on our input and then worked diligently to gain approval from the city which given where we live is a protracted and complicated process. Once approval was gained Eric continued to work closely with us and coordinated extremely well with the contractor we selected. As challenges emerged and we had to alter plans due to uncovering areas that needed additional support (we live on a steep hill) Eric was able to develop and gain approval for the amendments rapidly.

Design Everest

We have worked with DOES Architecture on a few projects and the design work is top notch. Some architects create something that looks pretty but isn't functional or buildable (particularly with some of the seismic issues in CA). Eric's designs are both beautiful and well thought through from an engineering and construction standpoint. We can confidently recommend DOES Architecture for your architecture needs and often refer homeowners to them!

Eric of DOES Architecture designed a very custom two story deck for us with starglass panel railings, light wood floors, and inspired "spider legs" style steel support beams. We love it! Eric is easy to work with, a real perfectionist and can be tough with contractors when needed. He used and respected my ideas, and brought so many of his own to the project. He worked well with my interior designer, too!!

Eric built my house and I couldn't be happier. Eric is smart, resourceful, and extremely hard-working. I was impressed by his breadth of knowledge regarding not just architecture but the entire building process from contractor selection to permit approvals to the nuts and bolts of construction. His ability to come up with unexpected and budget-friendly solutions was a comfort during the stress of the home building process. Also, he just seems to really love what he does and it’s his passion that, I think, keeps him on top of his game.

We are a custom home builder and Eric was the architect on a project we just completed. He created a beautiful home, with excellent, comprehensive drawings and details. Eric made himself available to us and the homeowner whenever there were questions and would meet onsite to discuss. His drawings were precise and creative. On the Construction Administration portion, he was highly organized and reviewed all of our invoices for the homeowner. He was interactive in each and every part of the project. We highly recommend Eric Staten for any custom build or remodel projects you may have!

Eric is everything one would want in an architect/design partner - professional, creative, attentive to details and aesthetics and even cost conscious. His projects are elegant and context aware. Hired Eric from DOES Architecture to remodel our master bathroom in our SOMA loft: he did an awesome job, it's now simple, clean and stunning! Just how we wanted it :) Eric took care of all the details from start to finish and the process was very smooth. Highly recommend him!
